Readers nonfiction determine the writer's purpose for writing a text. We will consider how identifying an author's purpose helps them learn about a topic.

Stop & Jots

It seems like the hawk got bitten back when he bit someone else, like karma.
He tried escaped from the other bird that trapped him and he snapped his leg, he shouldn't of took the risk.
I just inferred that hawk just got captured by a human because he got tied up in a rope and carried away in a box.

Topic: A Hawks day in the life

Type of nonfiction: literary non-fiction

Point of view: third person

Information the author really wants us to know,

How A Hawk lives in one day
how A hawk gets food
What hawks eat
The resilience of a hawk

So what's the point?

Summarize - What message does the author really want us to take away from the text, or what was the author's purpose in writing this text? Mostly how people should treat hawks and how hawks live and one normal day of a hawk.

Asking Questions While Reading Nonfiction

Readers of nonfiction ask themselves questions before, during, and after reading. We do this to activate prior knowledge, build understanding, and monitor comprehension.

Before Reading

How does the title help me know what this text is going to be about?
I might be about black people being slaves and being treated badly.
What do I know about this topic or subject?
Back then black people were treated horribly and whites ruled over the blacks

What questions do I have?
How will Henry live in this book and how bad will it be for him.
What type of nonfiction is this? How does that help me prepare for this read? It is a literary non-fiction book and it will be more like a story then a books with facts and stuff like that.

Is there a particular way that the text is structured?
Not really and it's in third person.

During Reading

What do I understand?
Henry will be sold and will be moved away from his family.

What is unclear?
The whole system of selling people and family.

What new questions do I have?
Will Henry have his kids sold?
How will Henry mail himself to his family?
What is the stuff Henry put on his hand as an excuse to get home? I wonder how many other slaves mailed themselves? 100k mailed themselves.

After Reading

What have I learned?
I have learned that blacks wanted slavery so much that they would mail them self through boxes and Henry box brown was a real person.

What are the important ideas that stuck with me?
That families would get sold and blacks wouldn't know there birthday.

What new or lingering questions do I have?
Did Henry marry anybody and did he have kids.

Biography

Tells about someone. This is about Women explorers.
Lucy Evelin Cheeseman is who we will read about.
She was encouraged to bring home insects and bugs.

Reference

Lizards are more common than every body thinks.
It's Scales are the fingernails on your fingers.
Can blend in with stuff.
They can regrow body parts.
It's a reference about Lizards

Literary

Literary is a story but still tells facts.
Has illustrations instead of photographs.
Didn't tells as much facts as a reference.

Stop and Jots are not notes.
Stop and jots are thoughts that you have wile reading.
These thoughts can be any kind of lit circle discussion or any type of thought that might not share

Stop & Jots

Via is compassionate, she cares about Justin enough to convince that he will be OK memorizing his lines. Not every friend cares as much as she does about her friends.
A ladybug landed on Via hand and I think Justin wished for another date with Via because he kissed her. I think Via wished for one to because she smiled after.
I think that those three boys are Julian, Miles, and his twin Henry. They saw Jack and they don't like Jack.
I think Justin will go up to Julian and his friends and ask him why they were being mean to Jack because Jack just brought up Augie, and Justin will be like that except for Via.
I think Miranda still cares about Augie because she she still has a picture of him in her wallet and when you have a best friend you get to care about there family.
Augie mom and Augie were talking about daisy meeting grans in heaven and they were just having a nice peaceful talk and mom was trying to calm down Augie about daisy passing away.
The play is just about to start and they're looking at Via and her friends in the program. I wonder what will happen.
Everybody liked the play and the whole audience cheered. They were the last people to get and they got a standing ovation.
Augie got lost in the crowd and a familiar voice sounded and I think it is Miranda.
Via went to summer camp and she would make up things about herself and go hang out with the boys and that isn't allowed and when she got back she called Ella instead of Via.

Reflection Questions:

Which Conversation Starter above is Mr. Solarz' favorite? Why?
Which Conversation Starter above is your favorite? Why?
Describe one conversation you have already started in your Literature Circle. What was the question and how did the discussion go?

Answers:

His favorite is Share something that was confusing, because it helps understand the book that you're reading better
Pose a question because the conversations get much better.
Pose a Question and we asked each other if we could solve the mystery that was going on and it was a very good discussion.

STOP & JOTS

Summer and Augie wanted Jack to come sit with them at lunch. His friends dissed Jack again. Jack was getting looked at and Augie said "Welcome to my World."
Justin is now Vias "friend". And I wonder how he looks like and I want to know a little bit about him.
Justin was lying that Augie looks fine, and usually people wouldn't come back when they saw Augie because Justin was saying that sarcastically.
Via and Justin go to restaurant so Justin can meet Vias parents. After, they went back and had ice cream. Justin has ticks because he's nervous

School Wide lesson - 6

Jack punched Julian and Augie liked it. Augie asked him if he really did and Augie knew he did it because Julian said something mean about Augie.
Again and Again. Everybody keeps dissing Jack Will, because he punched Julian
Julian had 200 people party for hollidays and told everybody Jack Will had anger problems. Also, Jack and Augie were some of the few people who didn't get invited.

Reflection Questions:

What guideline above was new to you? Why do you suppose we should follow that guideline. If nothing was new to you, create one new guideline that we should all follow while discussing our reading. Explain why you think we should follow that guideline.
Name a guideline that you might have neglected to follow in the past. Did anything bad happen? What could have happened?

If you were about to read a book about about an astronaut who went to Venus, what are three or more things you might think about before reading that would activate your schema?
If the book said, "The astronaut's helmet began to melt..." what would you imagine the cause was? Why would his or her helmet be melting? Use your schema to answer this question.

Answers:

I need a lot of gas, can,It is a very long time, and I need to bring a lot of food
Probably whoever it was they were getting really hot.

Where and when do you usually read?
What kinds of books do you like to read? Why?
Do you have a favorite author, series, or genre? What is it?
How do you decide what to read once you are ready to select a new text?
Select a question from the class Padlet, and write some notes to record the answer.

I usually read before bed and in my bedroom because it's just a good way to get me tired
I like fiction and comics because the characters can do stuff that real humans can't actually do and it's funnier
Nothing in particular but one of my favorites is Andrew Clements
I would probably start with my favorite author and look for books that I've not read before
It usually takes a little bit less than a month if not a whole month

Stop & Jots:

Guy moves into house that hasn't been lived in for years, he's pretty brave. I'd be worried about the ghosts and spiders.
Nobody liked his house but he did, he doesn't care what other people think. Neither would I.
An again and again. They keep saying "this place is a disgrace, nobody likes his house.
Neighbors told him to fix his house but he just walked away.
The neighbors wanted to send him to jail. They sent long notes and they were being mean.
Henry is not phased and he doesn't care what they say. I like that he does this.
I'm starting to think if Henry is rude, the want and he's not hungry in a mean way.
He got annoyed with neighbors so he just moved and left his house.
Neighbors wondering if he would return. Neighbors want somebody to live.
Henry was missing the neighbors, he wrote to the mayor If I moved back would I be able to live the lifestyle that I want?
