How Do Our Bones Move?

  • 1.  Have you ever injured a joint? (Sprained ankle, dislocated shoulder, tennis elbow, etc.) How did it feel? What things were difficult to do after the injury?
  • 2.  Which of their moveable joints would be the hardest to live without?
  • 3.   What things would be difficult to do without that joint? Why?
  • 4.    If you had to choose one of your moveable joints to live without, which one would it be? Why?
  • Is there any movement they could do without joints? (I can think of at least one.)
  • 1. I have sprained my ankle, dislocated my finger, and broken my arm. It felt really bad and shooting pain went up my ankle and wrist whenever I put pressure on it. It was hard to play basketball and softball, which is how I got the injury.
    2. It would be hardest to live without a jaw joint. It is very important for everyday life.
    3. It would be very hard to chew and eat food. It would also be very hard to talk and move your jaw.
    4. I would choose to live without ankle joints because they aren't as important as hips or shoulder joints. I think I could live without them.

    Signs of Exertion

    12/8/2014

    Reflection Questions:

    • What three basic things do our bodies need in order survive?
    • If we exert ourselves, what are three (or more) signs that our bodies are in distress? Explain why our body does that (research it if you need to).
    • What can we do to make these signs go away?
    Answers:

    • We need water, food, sleep, oxygen, and shelter. Without these things, we will not survive.
    • We sweat because our body temperature rises. Sweating is our body's way of cooling down. We also breathe heavily. Our muscles are working hard, so they need more oxygen. Also, your muscles get sore. Your body needs more nutrients when exerting yourself, so the heart needs to pump more.
    • We can rest, drink water, and stretch before exerting ourselves. You can't stop sweat, because it is a good thing.

    Observing and Describing an Apple

    Picture
    Apple Observations:

    ·     Skin is a deep maroon color with golden flecks

    ·     Surrounding the pit is a green circle

    ·     Sticky and wet

    ·     Brown stains on the outer edge

    ·     Heart shaped

    ·     Soggy edges

    ·     Stem in the middle

    ·     Inside oxidizing over time

    ·     Stem in the middle pokes out in the pit and has little hairs

    ·     Small almond shaped seeds poke out in the center

    ·     Juice squirts out when it is squeezed

    ·     Juice also squirts out when you poke the skin

    ·     Mushy interior

    Reflection Questions:
        1. Why were you able to observe so many things about your apple today?
        2. Why is observation and description so important in science?
    3. Rank order the five senses in the order or your observations (i.e. which sense was used most, second most, etc
    Answers:

    1. I was able to observe so many things because I could use 4 of the 5 senses. Senses like sight and feel were easy and had a lot of details.
    2. It is important so that you could have more information on what you need to observe. It could also help you because if you can describe it good, you can describe it to someone else.
    3. Sight, Touch, Smell, Hear, Taste.

Human Body Pre and Post Test

    Reflection Question:
    1. What was the hardest part of this activity?
    2. Which organs do you think you put in the right places?
    3. Which organs do you think are probably in the wrong places?
    Answers:
    1. The hardest part was trying to replicate the exact size and shape of the organs. It was also hard to try and place organs that I have never heard of.
    2. I think I got the heart, lungs, bladder, brain, eyes, larynx, and skin right. I knew what these were, so I could figure out where they went.
    3. I think I got the pharynx, liver, diaphragm, esophagus, gallbladder, trachea, pharynx, large intestine, small intestine, kidneys, pancreas, and spleen wrong. I have never heard of these organs, and I just guessed where they were.

How Might Humans and Aliens Be Different?

    12/3/2014

    Humans

    Picture
Here are some ways we have adapted to our environment and needs:

    • We have thumbs so that we can grab objects and tools
    • We have noses so that we can smell and breathe without our mouth
    • We have mouths so that we can breathe and eat food which provides the nutrients we need
    • We have brains to control our nerves, which control our bodies
    • We have feet and toes to keep our balance when we walk
    • We have excretory systems to get rid of waste we don't need
    • We have two legs so that we don't have to hop to get around
    • We have bones to protect our organs and other fragile things
    • We have joints to bend our limbs and move better
    • We have muscles to increase the strength of our bones

    Aliens

    Picture
On my alien here are the things I put on it to adapt to it's environment:

    • A puddle of slime underneath it so that it can get around on the wet, smooth ground
    • A pair of eyes that are slimy to match the environment
    • A frill to move swiftly and catch the air to breathe
    • Two flipper gliders to move along the ground
    • A red spiky mouth to suck up algae and other food
    • Do we have cells similar to the aliens you created?  How or why not?
    • Humans (and probably aliens) have cells that have special functions.  What are some of these cells and what organs and systems are they a part of?  Give at least three examples and be specific.  (Example: Osteoclasts are cells that make up spongy bone inside of many of our bones.  This is part of the skeletal system.)
    • We do not have cells similar to the alien I created. My alien had flippers and slime to get around on its environment, which we don't need on our planet.
    • Red blood cells are cells that carry oxygen to parts of the body and carry carbon dioxide to the lungs to exhale. Brain cells communicate with other parts of the brain and body to work and do things. The heart cells contract to keep the heart pumping blood.
