Revolutionary War Hero Project

Who was your famous person and why were they famous?
Why is it important for children to study specific people's lives from a time period in history?
What was the hardest part about completing your Revolutionary War Hero Project? What made it hard?
How did it make you feel to complete your Revolutionary War Hero Project without much help from adults? Why?

1. My famous person was Crispus Attucks. He protested in the Boston Massacre. He gave his life for the freedom of America.
2. It is important so that we can learn how different people can live in the same time period. They all do different things. We also need to know what struggles they had and how they overcame them.
3. The hardest part was putting the poster together. There were so many things to put on and learn about, and we needed to make everything fit.
4. I felt good because this was a big project and I did it by myself. I think that I worked hard and did a good job.

Describing a Character

How hard was it to describe your creature?
What did you do well?
What do you wish you did better so your partner could have drawn it better?
How well did you do in drawing your partner's creature?
What do you wish they did better to have helped you draw the creature better?

1. It was pretty easy to describe my creature. The shapes and features were broad and general enough to describe.
2. I described the legs and feet well. They turned out just like the card.
3. I wish I described where the ears were. They ended up lower than they were supposed to be, so I think I should have described where they were.
4. I did okay in drawing my partner's creature. I didn't know that he was yawning, which affected the entire drawing.
5. I wish that I knew that he was yawning. It would have helped my overall drawing.

1. What was the most surprising thing you learned about energy during this entire unit? Why was it surprising?

4. How would you define energy?

Answers:

1. The most surprising thing I learned was that heat energy goes from warm to cold water. I thought it could go both ways, and it surprised me that it only goes one way.
2. My favorite part of the energy unit was the energy transfers because we got to incorporate fun toys with learning.
3. Energy is found everywhere. It is in our bodies, it is in a classroom, even outside! There are many different types of energy, they can be found together.
4. I would define energy as everything. We use lots of it everyday and it is in everything we do.

Revolutionary War Tug-of-Rope

Reflection:

1. Which team were you a member of?

2. How did you feel at the beginning of the game?

3. Who did you think would win the game at first (RED or BLUE)? Why?

4. How did you feel as the rules changed? Did you get discouraged or more confident? Why?

5. What were the reasons why the BLUE team won?

Answers:

1. I was a member of the White team. My team was representing the French.
2. I felt a little bit angry because the teams were divided unequally, with the strongest and tallest kids on the red team, and the weakest and shortest kids on the blue team.
3. I thought the red team would win because they had the strongest and tallest kids, which would help in a tug of war.
4. I felt more confident as the rules changed because they helped the team I was cheering for and helping.
5. The blue team won because the rules changed in their favor, and they got extra help.

    Today we played tug-of-war as a metaphor for the Revolutionary War. There were 3 teams, the Red team, the Blue team, and the White team.

    The Red team represented the British Army. They were the tallest and strongest kids because in the beginning, the British Army was trained, strong, and well supplied. The Blue team represented the Continental Army. They were the shortest and weakest kids because the Continental Army was made up of poor farmers, merchants, hunters, and slaves. They didn't know anything about war and fighting. They were not supplied well, weak, and unprepared. There were less Blue team members than Red team members because they were being trained to fight in the war. The White team represented the French. They came late because they had to travel all the way from France to the American colonies.

    The Blue team members were offered a prize if they won because they had worked so hard to protect the land. One student on the Blue team was not offered a prize because he was representing the slaves. Even if the Blue team won the war, the slaves did not get anything. They didn't get their freedom like everybody else did. They were still slaves, so fighting in the war did not do them any good.

    The White team cheered for the Blue team because France hated England and had had many wars with them. They wanted to get revenge and would side with anyone who was going against them. They had to come late because they were traveling across the ocean. Part of the Red team came late too, because not all of the soldiers came to the American colonies right away. They were traveling from England to the colonies to fight. The Red team had to pull the rope past the flag while the Continentals only had to prevent them from doing it because the land was already theirs. They were just protecting it from the British.
