Skill Drill:
The jagged-toothed edge of the zipper that was always hard to unzip The string that frayed out from the edge of the lining that my mom always went crazy over The hard, elastic edge with the tiny stitches The pocket the zipper sits under and gets caught in The hollow fabric next to the cushioned inside Man, have I had a weird night. I actually feel pretty great right now, but for some reason, everything seems different.I have been extremely out of shape for WEEKS, but I now feel light and energetic. I stretch and open my eyes, and I see that I am NOT in my own bed, or even my own HOUSE! I cautiously look around, hoping I wasn’t kidnapped, but something seems familiar about where I am. I get up and look around some more, and I see that I am trapped in some sort of black mesh. Weird. I remember almost ALL of last night. Then, my nerves kick in. Panic surges through me, and I look down at my feet to see that I am standing on MY OWN hand sanitizer that I have always kept in MY OWN backpack. I am immediately jolted by the size of that bottle of hand sanitizer. It has to be three times the size of me! I scan this crazy place and suddenly realize it is my backpack!
We created a metaphor for the Revolutionary War by playing a game of tug of war. We had the blue team, (the colonial army) the red team, (the British army) the white team, (the French) and a different group on the red team. (The Native Americans). The blue team was larger, and was given a motivation that if they won, they wouldn't have to do the blog post, which represented the colonies getting their independence, and the British just fighting to keep things how they already are. The white team was just cheering for the blue team at first, but then joined in on the action, which was essentially what the French did in the Revolutionary War. The other people on the red team stood for the Native Americans because they sided with the British during the Revolutionary War. The Native Americans sided with the British because if the British won, that meant that they would get to keep their land. In the Revolutionary War, the British army was stronger and extremely well trained, where the colonial army was made up of volunteers. In our metaphor, the taller kids were on the British army, and the shorter, or less tall kids were on the colonial army.
1. I was a member of the red team 2. At the beginning of the game I was pretty confused, but later on, I understood the metaphor and why we were doing what we were doing. 3. Definitely blue, because they were given a reason to be motivated, and a lot of volunteers. 4. I never really felt anything because I knew the blue team wasn't going to get the reward if they won, and that it was a complete metaphor for the Revolutionary War. 5. They were motivated, they had more team members, and they had lots of help from the French team. 6. America did start with a weak government once we won the war, but that was just because we had a huge change in everything, and we were no longer being owned by Britain. It was important that America won the war because if they lost, Britain would probably be harsher on them. 7. If America had lost the war, we wouldn't be a free country now. The British also probably would've passed more laws and unfair acts. Singing out loud in front of people has always been one of my biggest fears. I have tried and been able to avoid it until a couple of weeks ago. I knew we were going to have to sing in front of the class as an assessment, but it didn't really think about it until that day. Mr. Berger says that we will be rated on a scale of 1 to 5
The dreaded previous singer skips up to me, not even half as terrified as I am now, and stops right in front of me. Sudden embarrassment surges through me, and my heart starts running a marathon. I fall to the ground and pretend I am kidding with my stupid fears. I finally get up and start skipping around and singing, not too bad, until it hits me. I suddenly start laughing hysterically, and turn redder than an overripe tomato. Something just clicked, and I realized what was happening. I stumbled around and looked at my class, all giggling, (which I don't normally mind, but in this situation... Things are pretty different.) I hit a few more messed up notes, and FINALLY, I finish, gasping for air, I get a grip to tell myself that I'm done. Then I say: "I think I got a 2 on my music grade..."

Type of nonfiction: Literary Nonfiction Point of view: 3rd Person Information the author really wants us to know
So what's the point?
To show how humans can interfere with nature and almost ruin an animal's life. iAsking Questions While Reading Nonfiction Readers of nonfiction ask themselves questions before, during, and after reading. We do this to activate prior knowledge, build understanding, and monitor comprehension Before Reading The title helps me know that this is probably about the underground railroad and slavery. The freedom box I think is probably somewhere Henry hides or something. I know that the underground railroad was a way for slaves to escape and become free. I also know that African Americans were slaved and discriminated. I am wondering if any of the main characters get caught traveling with the underground railroad, and I am also wondering what the box has to do with anything. I think this is a literary nonfiction, or historical fiction. During Reading I understand that Henry is a slave and he works with his family, and that his master was sick, so in his will he passed Henry on to his master's son. I am wondering if Henry will ever see his family again, because the rest of his family might be being freed. I think it is unclear about Henry's family being freed, because I don't really know if that is true or not. Some new questions I have are if his parents are being freed, if his master sent Henry to work for his son because he knew Henry was a good worker, and he also knew that his son was tougher, and if Henry's children are going to have something happen to them. After Reading I was at band practice To: Borris Jenkins Since you requested that I send a message so you could know me better, I sent you a letter to tell you something about myself. First off, as you know, I am Peter Salem. I started off as an African American slave, was freed, and I served as a soldier in the Revolutionary War. I strongly disagree with King George and all of his little “antics”. I already felt that I was not treated fairly, being an African American and all, but when King George came around and RUINED everything… Well, let’s just say I was NOT a happy camper, and neither were any of the other patriots I sided with. Back to the point, I thought that independence should be something we shouldn’t have to fight for. Just a basic part of life, but once again, King George claimed he was helping us. I would call it something more like… Containing us. That’s it. Containing us and controlling us. I also feel that the loyalists are cowards. They are afraid to fight for independence, against Britain. I felt that if all of the colonies fought against Britain, we could accomplish something amazing. Some things that are important to me are my Lucky Shot, which I killed British Major John Pitcairn with during the Battle of Bunker Hill. I was proud of myself, because after being a slave, I was actually given credit for something important. I also feel that my cabin in Leicester was extremely important to me. I built it myself, lived in peace in it after the war with a career as a cane weaver, and lived with my beautiful wife, Katy Benson. One more thing that is important to me that you should know about is my flintlock rifle. This is important because I always had my trusty rifle by my side in all of the battles I fought in. Well, I think you should at least know a little something about me now. Yours Truly, SWBST Summary The patriots wanted to break free from Britain, but they protested for independence, so King George set a bunch of new acts that prevented us from being our own country. Then we started the Revolutionary War, and won independence.
