These ingredients combined represent sushi.

Reflection Questions:

  1. Explain how the matter in each ingredient can be traced back to plants.
  2. Explain how these ingredients can be traced back to the sun.
  3. What MATTER in the food originally came from producers?
  4. What ENERGY in the food originally came from the sun?
  5. How is energy transferred from the sun to ingredients in your favorite foods?

Questions

  1. Plants need energy and matter to grow. Where do plants get their ENERGY?
  2. Where do plants get their MATTER?
  3. Where do plants get their FOOD (be careful - this is a trick question)?
  4. Why are plants called Producers?
  5. What would happen if plants didn't have a way to get energy?
  6. What would happen to animals if there were no plants to eat?
  7. What are some of the LIVING components of a plant "system"? (A plant "system" is everything that a plant needs to survive and everything it produces.)
  8. What are some of the NON-LIVING components of a plant "system"?
  9. In what ways do the components of the system interact?
  10. What matter is transported in and out of the plant system?

Sun: The Sun                     Grass: Producer                       Bongo: Herbivore                      Lion: Carnivore

1: The sun grows the grass, the grass feeds the bongo, the bongo feeds the lion.
2: Yes, because it all cycles around, like other systems.
3: The food web would no longer exist, because it all cycles around, and couldn't if one of it's elements ceases to exist any longer.
4: By consuming other things in the food web.
5: Fat from the food they eat, and energy, also from the food/drink they eat.
6: Matter that is not used in the food web will be used by another element of another food chain at some point.

Plants

  • Carbon Dioxide (air)
  • Oxygen (air)
  • Water (soil)
  • Sunlight (the sun)
  • Potassium (soil)
  • Nitrogen (soil)
  • Phosphorus (soil)
  • Carbon (carbon dioxide)
  • Calcium (soil)

Insects

  • Oxygen (air)
  • Water (river/lake/pond)
  • Food (carnivores get food from meat, herbivores get food from plants, and omnivores get food from both), Carbon (food)
  • Energy (food)
  • Sleep
  • Shelter
  • Warmth (sun/fire)

Animals

  • Oxygen (air)

Questions

On the human food label:
  1. How do we find the energy (calories) per serving?
  2. How do we find the matter (carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins, minerals)?
  3. Where can we locate the list of ingredients?

On the pet food label:
  1. Where can we locate the list of ingredients?
  2. How do we find the percentage of different types of matter in the food?

Answers

On the human food label:
1. Look at the serving size, and how many servings there are to find the amount of calories per serving.
2. In this example, there's one gram of fat, 11 grams of carbohydrate, one gram of protein, 22% of the daily value of vitamins, and 6% of the daily value of minerals. Once you have the information, you multiply all the grams by the number of servings, which in this case is five.
3. At the bottom of the label.

On the pet food label:
1. At the top of the label.
2. By looking at it.

Other Questions

  1. As a result of looking at food labels, what did you learn about food?
  2. Look at the ingredients of one human food label. Write down the food name. What ingredients came from animals?
  3. What ingredients in the above food label came from plants?
  4. What similarities and differences did you notice between the human food and pet food labels you looked at?
  5. Choose an animal/insect from the ecosystem walk. What do you think it eats? Explain what you think it gets from its food.

Other Answers

1. Pet and human foods are very similar.
2. Ketchup: None.
3. All of them, because they ARE plants.
4. They both have meats and vegetables, which are essentials to all life forms.
5. I wasn't at the ecosystem walk.

Imagine a Place...
Where change is measured by altitude, not time.
Though time is endlessly ticking,
it ages nobody,
and though a sphere can roll in any direction,
change is never altered.
