Lesson 1: What Do We Notice About Poetry?

What is the poem about?

Poem 1 - I think the poem is about skateboarding/moving in some way on a street or sidewalk, and being fully in control of your movement with in-depth descriptions of how it is moving. The way the poem is written gives a certain sensation of the purpose of the poem. 

​Poem 2 - I believe that "enchantment" represents what is happening on the porch with the family that is there. I think that the author thinks that whatever is happening there is enchanting, and when the mom turns off the light, it "breaks the spell", meaning that their time there was over.

How does the poem look on the page?

Poem 1 - I think that the shape of the poem helps to show where to pause, but not all of the time. I think it also shows a symmetrical shape that looks nicer than just a blob. It also shows different parts of the poem in different sections.
