On the trail, buffalo were in our way. We decided to kill one for dinner. It would also spook the buffalo and make them run away. Logan killed the buffalo but he also spooked our oxen. Luckily nothing bad happened.
Picture
When we arrived in Fort Kearny, we decided to stay 3 days. While we were there, we stayed in sod houses. People were concerned that these houses weren't sturdy enough to protect them from native americans
Picture
Also in Fort Kearny, we traded our oxen in for fresh, new ones who aren't exhausted with a man named William Rinhart. He was a hard businessman, making us spend a lot of money. We decided on $145.
Picture
While on the trail, we passed Robert Gagne's nephew's grave. It made him very sad.
Picture
Finally in Fort Kearny, we decided to repair our wagon for $50.
Picture
While on the trail, the Hatfield's got sick so Mr. Mcoy wanted to leave them behind because he did not want to have the rest of the people on the wagon train to get sick. The rest of the people on the wagon trail went to Mr. Mcoy telling him that he can't make the decision because he is not the the leader or person in charge. This turned into a heated argument.

Today we found solutions to our blisters. four people popped their blister and the rest will soak their blister while we are at Alcove Springs. The four people who popped their blister are expected to get infected from the river because there is a lot of waste in the river and the blister is now an open wound. The infected water will get into the open wound and that is how the people who popped their blister's feet will get infected. The sheep we bought also keep running away and every once in a while somebody has to go out of the way of the trail and look for them. This can get very annoying. Also all of us are very homesick. when we finally made it to the Kansas River, we decided it would be hard to haul our wagons across by ourselves so we hired a ferryman to haul it across the river. The ferryman had a ferry/raft that he made by himself and that is where he put the wagons. The ferryman charged us $30 per wagon, but he gave us a discount of $20 off. For the four total wagons it was $100 and it would originally be $120 without the discount. While crossing the river, an ox got spooked and started jumping around. The ox injured Tyler Smith, and he will have to stay in the wagons for a week from lots of bruises and a broken toe. Also when crossing the river somethings feel out of our wagons and we lost all of our bacon, tea, ropes, and biscuits. The people who popped their blisters didn't have a big consequence, they just had to rest their blister during our stay at Alcove Springs After a little bit more of journeying, we got to Alcove Springs. We stayed there for three days until we continued on to journeying.

Today, we finished shopping at the mercantile store. We had to make sure we didn't bring too much of something or very little of something. Everyone was arguing with each other. They were arguing rather they should take a shotgun or a rifle. Also people were arguing to see if we should take molasses. The worst part about our shopping, though is that we bought blankets for three people to fit in. I want to sleep in my own bed. Besides, some of these people smell and do you really want to know how it feels to sleep with somebody who smells really bad? Yep, we started our journey and I had to sleep with the smelliest guy ever! The first night, I didn't even get to sleep because he smelled so bad. It get's worse The second person I was sleeping with snores like crazy!

Mars Constitution

5/16/2016

We the citizens of the independent Republic of Innovatio create this constitution for ourselves and future generations to ensure freedom, equality, and fraternity. We believe very strongly that our individual human rights should be protected and that justice should be served. We also believe that the citizens of the Republic of Innovatio should secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and work for the maintenance of peace and security throughout Mars. We subscribe to the rights, and obligations of everyone on mars. We will provide for the common defense and promote the general welfare. We the citizens think that this constitution should be always followed and never dishonored.
In order for the Independent Republic of Innovatio to remain united and safe, we have made laws that will protect us and our mission. To ensure the success of our purpose, each individual must do their job and follow the work schedule. There is an exception though, we have a work pass signed by the doctor that says how many days you can not do your job, and why you don’t have to do your job. Tools used for jobs, like knives used by the chefs or stethoscopes for the doctors, are strictly prohibited to everyone else. Tampering with any homes, automobiles, or any work spaces will be declared unconstitutional.
Although the laws above ensure the success of the mission, The Independent Republic of Innovatio has laws that ensure the safety and happiness of our citizens. In order to maintain security in our nation, searching through people’s belongings without government approval is illegal. Vandalizing and stealing property is also unconstitutional and illegal. Physical abuse is also illegal to ensure the wellbeing of the people. Finally, blackmailing is unconstitutional. If having done a crime then you go to the jury and will be convicted guilty or innocent  One of the laws that we made is no slacking.(No slacking means you can’t just not go to work). You have to have special permission to Do It. We made this because some people were stealing and slacking, our consequence for this is to search the pods for fifteen minutes to see why they were not at work. Also if they are not at work for no reason they will have to work at night with no pay, this means that you don’t get paid money for that night. We also saw that people were vandalizing other people's property so we made sure you will fix the item and work an extra shift of work overnight with no pay. When people need privacy you have to give them privacy. Make sure when you want privacy you can lock the doors and tell people that they want privacy. We are not allowed to have weapons on mars. The trainer is allowed to use types of weapons to train people how to do things. Another one of our laws is not to kill or hurt people. If you do kill or harm someone in vain, you will get the same treatment that you did to that person. If you steal anything, then you will be forced to tell us where the object you stole is. If you won’t tell us, we will look around your space to make sure the object is not there. We will find more evidence and if you for sure stole it, and can’t find the object, you will be fined. We will try to be caring, considerate citizens so our country is a safe and nice place to live. But to have these laws, we have to know how to make laws.
To decide if a law should be made and considered constitutional, citizens will use four effective tactics to ease conflicts on whether a law should be made or not. The first tactic is the agreement vote. The agreement vote is where all of the citizens unite to vote to see if they want the law to be made or not. The second tactic is the fairness vote. The fairness vote is where all citizens vote to see if the law that is made is fair enough to enforce. The third tactic is the usefulness vote. This takes place when citizens come together to vote to see if the law is useful enough to enforce. The fourth tactic is the debate. The citizens must use the debate when an agreement is not settled after all of the other tactics are used, and have failed. The citizens get to share their opinions with arguments and defenses to prove themselves right. The majority vote is seventeen votes at the least.   At least twenty five citizens need to vote to make a law.
Although, If some people do not agree with the laws that we made then we can hold a meeting during lunch, breakfast, or dinner deciding if we want the law/rule gone.  During the meeting we will discuss the differences of the law. For example, if one person wants the law gone and another doesn’t, we will discuss the differences and come to an agreement.  When we are done discussing the differences of the law/rule we will vote so that it doesn’t get out of control, and so that everyone doesn’t start fighting. When we decide if we want the law and or rule gone we will take it away and we will not use it as a rule or a law anymore.
We will make and vote on laws during dinner twice a week. You are required to attend unless you are granted special permission by the doctors or other authority figure. The dates of the weekly meetings will be on Monday and Friday. Everyone is able to propose new ideas for laws, and/or suggestions that might not be made into laws but that we might want to keep in our head.  To approve a law you must have at least twenty five people that are able to vote. At least seventeen people need to give their approval on the law.  To promulgate the law we will keep a list of the laws in many places and each individual will have their own copy. If you come up if with a law we will write it down on your list and we will discuss everyone's list’s at dinner.
There is no government to make the laws and no single person or group will decide laws that will affect the whole country.  The Government is the people so we will decide as a group what laws we will put into effect over the people of The Independent Republic of Innovatio. Our government in the Independent Republic of Innovatio will not overpower any of the other people in Innovatio, our government can not take away anybody’s rights. Authority can’t threaten anybody to give government more power. Before a law is officially made, if it is unconstitutional, it won’t be a law. Everybody can have a say in government.
So we try our best to respectfully follow this constitution. Everyone in the Independent Republic of Innovatio will be required to invest time to fully read this constitution so our community has ensured justice.

Bill of Rights:
The citizens of the Independent Republic Of Innovatio have several set rights. The four most important of these rights are the rights to life, equal power, religion, and speech.  You will not have your life taken away unless you have taken the life away from another human in vain. You may always have the right to a trial by the people if you are accused of a crime. If you are on a trial by the people then you will have to get a vote of three fourths to not be guilty. Every citizen will be given equal power to vote, discuss ideas freely in a meeting and suggest new laws in a meeting and also have an equal vote if they pass our voting test and are five years old or older. You will always have to go to meetings even if you don’t care about the topic because we want everybody's input on laws to make sure it is equal for everybody.
Religion, every citizen will be able to practice and celebrate their religion of choice, but this may only be allowed if this religion does not interfere with your responsibilities, affect some other person's rights, or infringe on “the mission's success.” If the religion you choose to practice does not allow you to correctly do your job then that religion will not be able to be practiced or will have to be modified.
Speech, every person shall be given freedom of speech. However if they abuse this power or use this right to encourage unwanted violence, then that right shall be taken away by vote of the people. Anyone can suggest laws as long as they are respectful of the of the verdict of the people’s vote. You also need to respect others opinions and ideas.
You have the right to be excused from your job and meetings if you are very ill or injured and a doctor has given you a signed work pass telling how long you will be out. Everyone has the right to a work pass as long as they truly need it. If they purposely got hurt then they are not eligible for a work pass. You can also choose to get both afternoons on weekends off of work, or just one full day. So every citizen of the Independent Republic Of Innovatio is given these rights to be a good, respectful, kind citizen and to ensure the justice of this direct democracy and the next generations to come.

Reflection Questions

  1. Why do you think we spent so much time learning the "We the People" curriculum before colonizing Mars?
  2. What were you & your peers able to use from our "We the People" lessons when creating our Mars Constitution?
  3. Describe some examples of when you (or those around you) used the internet to research things that we used (or didn't end up using) for our Mars Constitution.
  4. Why should more students be encouraged to research things while CREATING (like we did when we created our Constitution)?
  5. What are some things you learned about government from this experience?

Answers

1. I think we spent so much time on the "We the People" curriculum because we would be prepared to create a government on mars. Pretty much in we the people, we learned on how the United States was and is ran. Also it told us how our government creates and enforces laws. This gave us lots of ideas on how we would run our government on mars and and laws we would make and enforce.
2. We would think of how the "We the People" book told us how the United States was ran then we would get some ideas. In colonize mars, we have a different government than what the U.S. government. We have a pantisocracy government. A pantisocracy government means that we all get to create laws and we all get to be part of our government. This is easy because there are only 27 of us. We wouldn't get as much ideas from "We the People" than if we had the same government as the U.S. because we have a completely different government than the U.S.
3. We didn't end up using the three branches because we think should all come up with laws in one group. As I said, we only have 27 people on mars, so we will discuss laws as a group. We did follow the law of going to jail if you have done something bad, though. We do have a jail. I personally disagree with this rule because we we made a jail, we were still struggling to survive like building pods, getting water, etc. It is a dumb idea to have a jail on mars because it makes us have less people while we are trying to survive! I think we should just fine the person with cash, then we won't have people in jail and we would get less work done.
4. We get plenty of ideas form the internet on what will be in our constitution. Although, JJ, my partner and I mostly came up with ideas in our head. We would write down our ideas in a google doc.
5. I learned that some governments, such as Russia, have everybody get the same amount of money no matter who hard they work at the job compared to another person. This is unfair because somebody who works as hard as they can at the job can get the same amount of money as a person who is lousy. Other governments, such as Finland is a republic government. I don't know much about Finland but I know that a lot of people enjoy living in Finland, I would guess that this means Finland has a good government.

Science Fair Presentation - First Draft

I'm glad I recored my presentation before the science fair because:
  • It get's us prepared for the real science fair.
  • It shows us on camera what we are doing good and what are we doing bad.
  • We can practice and practice to make our real presentation as good as it can.

Science Fair Presentation - Final Draft

By the end of Science Fair, my presentation was much better because:
  • I feel much more confident when I speak.
  • I am more comfortable when I speak.

Overall, I think that the Science Fair was a valuable experience because our topic had us learn more about something we are excited to learn about. Ex. I had no idea that the plants still survive a week or so with the different liquids. I thought they were all going to die the first day.

I definitely made some mistakes along the way, but I learned from them. Here are some examples: I was fumbling with words a little bit in the beginning, but then I got better to speak more fluently. Also during science fair "I din't do it in the video because it was hard to. I asked the audience what liquid made the plant survive the longest. It got some of the kids more excited about my project.

If I were given the chance to do anything differently, I would... Talk slower. I feel like I am so worried about going over the two minutes that I talk so fast, some of the audience doesn't even know what I am saying.

Reflection Questions

  1. Explain how the matter in each ingredient can be traced back to plants.
  2. Explain how these ingredients can be traced back to the sun.
  3. What MATTER in the food originally came from producers?
  4. What ENERGY in the food originally came from the sun?
  5. How is energy transferred from the sun to ingredients in your favorite foods?

Answers

1. Almost every single ingredient comes from a plant. Ex. ground beef comes from a cow. But the cow eats the grass. That counts as he ingredient of a cow came from because the cow depends on grass because the grass helps it survive. "Without grass, the cow would starve to death. Grass is also a plant. Also the sun is the very first step on how the ingredient is made. Plants are almost all the time the second.
2. These ingredients can be traced back to the sun because plants grow and live with the sun. The sun is one of the most key parts for a plant to survive. ex. ground beef to cow to grass to sun.
3. Almost all the matter from the food came from producers. Like in questions 1 and 2, ingredients/food can be traced back to plants and the sun.
4. some or most of the food originally came from the sun because all foods start from the sun.
5. The sun grows a plant. Ingredients that are meat, such as beef, come from cows.  Cows eat plants (grass which gives them energy A.K.A. calories which helps the animal to grow and live.

Reflection Questions

  1. Plants need energy and matter to grow. Where do plants get their ENERGY?
  2. Where do plants get their MATTER?
  3. Where do plants get their FOOD (be careful - this is a trick question)?
  4. Why are plants called Producers?
  5. What would happen if plants didn't have a way to get energy?
  6. What would happen to animals if there were no plants to eat?
  7. What are some of the LIVING components of a plant "system"? (A plant "system" is everything that a plant needs to survive and everything it produces.)
  8. What are some of the NON-LIVING components of a plant "system"?
  9. In what ways do the components of the system interact?
  10. What matter is transported in and out of the plant system?

Answers

1.  Plants get their energy from the sun. Without the sun, plants would never be able to grow.
2. Plants get their matter from carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide is like what we breathe in, oxygen. For plants, they need carbon dioxide. I can infer this because the day we got back in after spring break. Mr. Solarz' plants weren't looking to well. I remember Mr. Solarz said he came in once during spring break to water the plants. Then I thought that people weren't in here giving plants what they need: carbon dioxide. When people are in the room, they breathe out carbon dioxide.
3. Plants get food form the sun. Food gives us energy and the plant's energy is the sun. That is how I inferred. They also get food from the soil because soil has important nutrients for the plant.
4. Plants are called producers because they produce their own food. They do this light from the sun, carbon dioxide from the air, and soil. This helps the plant survive.
5.The plants would not be able to grow. It is common sense, really. You can't grow a plant without sunlight, soil, and water. Another thing that could happen is that it could affect the food web. If there were no plants, some animals would starve to death. Without the animal that eats plants, an animal that eats the animals that eats the plant,s would die too. Woo, that came out fast! :)
6. Oops, said it in 5. (above) :)
7. The root. The root of the plant helps get soil from the ground to the plant. Also leaves help plants, too. Leaves soak up sunlight and gives the plant sunlight.
8. The nonliving components are all described and showed on the thinglink. Oxygen, carbon dioxide, soil, the sun, and water. I may be wrong on this one. I couldn't decide if the sun was a living or a non-living thing.
9. The water interacts with the soil. "Water seeps into soil." Leaves interact with the sun "Leaves collect sunlight from the sun." The plant also interacts with the soil filled with water. "By getting water into the plant's roots."
10. Carbon dioxide, water and nutrients from the soil is transported into the plant and Oxygen is transported out of the plant. Oxygen is pretty much what the plant breathes out.
