Bloodstream #1 (jello with tenderizer)

Reflection Questions + Answers Part 1

1. how does cup 1 relate to the stomach?
2. what did cup 1 do differently than cup 2

1. Cup 1 related to the stomach because it leaked through. First the jello went into the cup and it sat there for 45 minutes to have the science experiment to work just like our stomach digesting food. The jello that leaked through represented it going through the pyloric sphincter A.K.A. the super soaker in your body. This soaks the food you digested which represents the wet coffee filter. It then goes through the intestines which is what the jello did. It broke through the coffee filter and to the bottom of the cup where it goes through the appendix and gets pooped out. So, the after 45 minutes, the coffee filter pooped out the jello to the bottom of the cup.
2. Cup 1 had a very wet coffee filter and the jello in Cup 1 leaked through the coffee filter. Overall both of these cups and the jello in them acted in very different ways almost like complete opposites.

1. How are the two cups different and why?
2. What process in the human body is demonstrated by the liquid in the bottom of the cup?
3. What process in the human body is demonstrated by the wet coffee filter?
4. How does this lab help us understand digestion?

1. Cup 1 was like a polar opposite to cup 2. Cup one had a wet coffee filter and the jello leaked through while cup two had a dry coffee filter and nothing leaked through. They were different because cup 1 had meat tenderizer in it and that broke down the jello to create that hole in the bottom of the coffee filter.
2. The meat tenderizer broke down the jello which is what happens in the human body. Digestive juices in the stomach break down the bolus that comes down from the esophagus.
3. When the digested food goes through the digestive system, it has to go through the the water gun in the digestive system " sorry forgot of the name " which gets the swallowed food wet to easily pass through the digestive system. That explains the wet coffee filter.
4. This lab helps us understand digestion better because all of the things that happened in bloodstream 1, have to do with the digestive system. Also the time of the lab was similar to the digestive system, too. The digestive process takes time it can't just plop down right to your stomach, there are many steps in the digestive system

I am really surprised that our world has about 7 billion, and 50 million! I thought that it was around 3 billion.
Asia makes up more than half of our worlds population.
Canada and the United States makes up just 1/20 of the wolds population.
There are nearly 6,000 different languages in the world.
1/5 of our worlds population is kids ages 9 or under!
1/2 of our worlds population is people under the age of thirty.
1/100 of our worlds population is people over the age of 79.
Every 10 years, our world's population grows 3/25 of what it is before!
By 2050, our worlds population may be only 23% of people under 20.
31% of worlds population uses Sheep and Goats for food resources.
There are 7 times more of chickens populations than peoples!
47% of the worlds people are severely undernourished or don't have a reliable source of food.
87% of the people in the world have a clean and good source of water.
30/36 school aged people go to school. Those 6 other people work or do child labor.
14% of our world can't read or write!
If every single person on earth got the same amount on money, we would each have $10,300.
10% of our worlds people, have 85% of our money!
Another 10% of our people, make $2 a day.
50% of the worlds people has radios.
45% of the worlds people have televisions.
103% of the worlds people have cell phones.
28% of the worlds people are computers.
76% of the world people have energy, while 24% do not.
Long ago, wood was the #1 energy source in the world.
73% of the world's people that use energy use fossil fuels.
17% use nuclear, and 10% uses renewable sources.
41% of the world's population lives in an area where malaria is found.
6% of the world's population get's malaria each year.
In 1000 B.C.E. Only 1% of the worlds population today live in that year!
In 1900, 32% of the world's population today lived back then.
Around the year 2150, there will be 2.5 times more than it is now!

Write a blog entry called, "If the World Were a Village" and write about the following in paragraph format. (Don't respond to these questions individually. Incorporate them all into a paragraph.)

Explain what surprised you about the statistics of our world.
What upset you? What do you wish were different?
What made you want to do something to improve a situation?
Can you do anything to help? If so, what?

Reflection Paragraph

This book was really good. Everybody should read this book and be informed of how bad our world is and how much our world is changing. The thing that upset me the most was how much people are undernourished with food. 47%! This is crazy and unfair to the 47% of the people who are undernourished. I wish that there was some sort of technology to prevent this from happening. This thing would ration out the food with everybody equally. The thing that surprised me the most was that in the year 2150, the worlds population will be 2.5 times more than it is now. Currently our world's population is around 7.4 billion! If you do the math, the year 2150 world's population will be around 18.5 billion people! That is why we are going to be sent to mars and see if it is safe to live on mars so that our world doesn't get crammed. A situation I want to help with to improve it is to give food to others who need it. I just feel feel like we should all be treated equally but that is not the case here. Food is not rationed out equally and some of that has to do with how much money they have. We can help with this by going to help at different volunteer places like Soup Kitchen and donate food and money to people who need it the most.

Reflection Questions

What did breathing through straws represent?
Why should we have this experience?
It was difficult to continue moving when you breathed through the straw. Why is that?
What are some things that affect the respiratory system and make it harder to breathe?
How would your daily life be affected if you could only breathe in small amounts of air with each breath?

Answers

1. Breathing through the straws represented how much oxygen you need to breathe in to live.
2. we should have this experience because breathing through both of these straws can feel like breathing normally if you are a smoker, or if you have asthma. Imagine if on a regular daily basis you had to breathe through a drinking straw? It would be tough and that is how it is for some smokers and people who have asthma. Make sure not to smoke and be active! :)
3. It was difficult because you are already trying to breathe through a smaller space which needs you to work harder at breathing in and out and when you combine that with walking in place that needs you to use up energy? Now that is difficult!
4. Some good things that affect breathing is playing sports or playing outside, running, and working out. These all make your heart and lungs stronger so keep it up! A bad thing is smoking. DO NOT keep on smoking it is bad for your body and affects your lungs badly. Things that you can't control that affect your breathing are diseases that affect your respiratory system.
5. You would not be able to play activities that involve being active, you would be more focused on how much air you breathe in than other important things in life, and it can possibly cause death.
