Reflection

        First we took a stethoscope, did the activity and then measured our heart rate for 15 seconds and then multiplied that number by four.  My heart rate increased as I exercised and while I relaxed then I had a slower heart rate.  I then took my data and

  3. Was the order in which you ranked the activities accurate? (It's good to be wrong!) Explain.
  4. What changes did you notice about your heart rate as you became more active?
  5. Why do you think your heart rate changed when you were more active? What inference can you make? (Use pages 65–66 of your reference book to help you answer this question.)

  1. Was it difficult to use the same technique throughout the whole experiment?
  2. How did you hands and fingers feel BEFORE, DURING, and AFTER the experiment?
  3. Describe how your data changed over time.
  4. What errors or inconsistencies might have affected your results?
  5. Why did your hand strength change over the course of this experiment?
  6. How do you think your muscle cells get oxygen, nutrients, and water to make the energy they need to function?
  7. What do you think you could have done to prevent your muscles from tiring?

Answers

  During the clothespin activity we had a clothespin that we opened and closed and then we counted how many times we did it.  We had to do the same exact thing over and over again.  My arm was hurting during the middle and near the end of the activity.  I had high scores at the beginning and the end.
  1. It was very difficult to keep doing the same thing because that means you barely get any rest and you used the same muscles over and over again.
  2. Before they were hurting because I poked myself with a pencil but they were fine otherwise not tired or anything.  During they were hurting and they felt really tired.  After the experiment they were fine and only tired a little bit.
  3. At first it was really low, (trial 1) then it got really high (trial 2)  It started slowly declining. (trials 3, 4, and 5)  It got really low after that. (trial 6 and 7)  Finally it started raising a gain to get from 91 to 118.  (trials 8, 9, and 10)
  4. I dropped the clothespin in trial 1 so I got a really low score.  Also sometimes we got a longer break then others because we needed to do something.  (5-10 seconds break).
  5. It changed because the more you exercise the more you can do it and the faster you can do it. 
  6. I think that they get oxygen, nutrients, and water to make energy from the blood that the heart sends to the hand and different body.  That's why your heart rate speeds up when you exercise.
  7. I think if I did the exercise a lot more often then I wouldn't get as tired but I would get tired.  I also think that if you didn't go as fast then you wouldn't get as tired. 
  8. I should keep going because I was really tired at the middle but at the end I was only tired a little bit.

KinderPals - January

  3. How did you improve your skills as a KinderPal from the first experience to the second?
  4. In what specific ways did you help improve your students' self-esteem?
  5. Why should other schools do a program similar to KinderPals? Is it worth the time spent?
  1. It has gone well because my KinderPal has been open to most of the things that I suggested.  They were okay with playing all of the games that I suggested and they were open to new strategies.  We had a fun time drawing and playing other games. 
  2. In the AM class he said yes to most of the questions.  (Do you play sports?, Are you a fair player in games?, etc;)  It was easier to fill out the chart and move on to something else.  With the PM class I felt he said no to more things but we got to talk longer and I found something that he really liked. 
  3. In the first experience I didn't know what to do and it was off to a slower start.  I didn't know what questions to ask and what activities to do.  With the second group I couldn't just step on the gas and go because that would be uncomfortable for him and I had to ease him into the transition.  I was able to find out what he liked quickly and do those things and then compliment him on his work.  We drew and played tic-tac-toe.  He even beat me once!
  4. I think I helped him feel better about playing a game and developing a strategy.  I also told him that I thought he was a nice friend and it was good that he was going on vacation in a few days. 
  5. I think other schools really should do a program like KinderPals because it helps the older kid be nicer to kids that have a tough time understanding things.  For the Kindergartner it helps raise their self esteem and it lets them play games and feel good.

  2. How were your pretend muscles similar and different to real muscles?
  3. What would happen if the ligaments of the models were overstretched or torn? How would it affect the way the models could operate?
  4. Explain what ligaments, tendons, and cartilage are.
  5. What made this activity fun?
  6. What made this activity challenging?
  1.   It needed two bones and two muscles. A bicep and a triceps, and it needed a humerus and a bone for both the ulna and the radius.  
  2. They didn't look like muscles at all but they worked like muscles do, only pulling never pushing.  They were also in the same place (relatively) as the real ones.  
  3. If the ligaments (rubber bands) were torn then the bones would flop around and the ''cartilage'' would pop out.
  4. Ligaments are the things in our body that attach bone to bone.  Tendons are the things found in our body that attach muscles to bones.  Cartilage is the soft spongy thing found in our body that prevents our  bones from rubbing together.
  5. It was fun because we got to chose our materials and chose our design and it was all up to us.
  6. It was challenging because we needed to know what everything was for and if we had everything and if it would work
