Food Matter & Energy

Answer the following questions while analyzing the Nutrition Labels:

1. As a result of looking at food labels, what did you learn about food?
2. Look at the ingredients of one human food label. Write down the food name. What ingredients came from animals?
3. What ingredients in the above food label came from plants?
4. What similarities and differences did you notice between the human food and pet food labels you looked at?
5. Choose an animal/insect from the ecosystem walk. What do you think it eats? Explain what you think it gets from its food.

Answers:

1. That it tricks you into thinking it is healthy. It tricks you by telling how much per serving not per can.
2. In butter it has sweet cream and milk.


3. The ingredient that came from plants is canola oil.
4. A similarity is that that they both have calories.  A difference is that in pet food it does not show the calories per serving.  
5. I think Preying Mantis eats other bugs because it is higher on the food chain.  I think that it gets energy and matter from the food. 

Answers:

1. Food provides energy and matter to humans and animals.  
2. No, pet food and human food do not have the same nutrients.  They are different because other animals need other types of nutrients.  A difference is the type of fat.  In the human food it shows the types of fat, in the pet food it does not. 
3. It depends.   If the pet is not getting enough calories, it should have pet food that has higher calories.  If it's getting too much, then it should have less calories.  Pet owners thing higher calories is better because it will usually have more protein and fat. 
4. Protein is what is in food that helps us repair our bodies and grow. 
5. Energy is in food that keeps our bodies warm.  
6. Energy transfers into heat in their bodies. 
7. 160 calories is in the milk.  Calories is a way to measure energy.  
8. Fat, nutrients and protein are the types of matter in food.
