Observing Shadow Patterns

  1. How are shadows made outside in the daytime? Provide some evidence to support your answer.
  2. Can shadows be made inside the classroom? If so, how?
  3. Do outside shadows change during the day? If so, how? Refer to the pole or stick the class observed outside if needed.
  4. Think about the time between observations of the pole’s shadow. What happened?
  5. What does this (the answer to #4) tell you about the sun’s position in the sky?
  6. Insert one or two photos (from mine above) into your blog post to help you explain how the sun's position appears to follow an arc throughout the day (if weather allows).

  1. Shadows are made by the sun bouncing off an object and the suns light cannot make it to a spot. The spot is darker because there is no sun light getting to that area.
  2. Shadows can be made by taking a bright light and by pointing it at something. Then the area behind is not getting light causing a shadow.
  3. Shadows outside do move because we are moving and the sun seems to move so shadows move. The shadows move because the sun moves on an arc through the sky.
  4. From answer #4 it tells you that the sun always moves. It also tells you that the sun didn't 
  5. It is always changing it's arc a little everyday

1.Living in a state of nature would be fun because you could do anything without punishment and you could go where you want. You couldn't get arrested for anything.
2.I'm glad we don't live in a state of nature it would be dangerous and hard to live a happy healthy life. Nobody would get in trouble or arrested.

Tracking Shadows During a Day

  1. What patterns did you notice about the shadow length throughout the day?
  2. What caused these patterns?
  3. When you analyzed your shadow graphs, when did the longest shadows occur? Why?
  4. When you analyzed your shadow graphs, when did the shortest shadows occur? Why?
  5. What was the most challenging part of this lesson?
  6. What do you feel you learned from completing this lesson?

  1. The shadow length got longer and shorter between the time's. It changed because the sun is in a different spot in the sky.
  2. The sun being on a certain pattern. It made the shadows do the same thing each day.
  3. The longest shadows occurred at 2:15 because the sun is at an angle. The angle determines how long the shadow is.
  4. The shortest time was at Noon because the sun is as high as it will be that day. It is is shorter because the angle of the sun makes the shadow shorter or longer.
  5. The hardest part was drawing the shadow. You had to not block it with your own shadow.
  6. I learned how the shadows change on where the sun is in the day. It changes because the angle of the sun.
