WEXPN2 Focusing on a Moment

11/19/2015

On Saturday I was at the Samuel's House to watch a movie. Regan, Addy and I were bored of Inside Out and got permission from Mrs. Samuels that we got to yell at any one who came in the room we were in to get out. And Bonus we had a phone from Regan's mom to use. So naturally we got into Youtube and took turns taking the phone and searching different things up on Youtube. When the Rappin Duke came on Addy introduced the "Addy" so we took down our hair and whipped it all over. Next we made dance to a Crazy Frog video and it included moves such as the "Addy," "Millie," The old man dance, Old Lady dance, and of course the Old Grandpa. Once we had part of our routine down; me and Addy breaking our backs and Regan conducting Mr. Murray came in to make sure we didn't barge into the kitchen with all the adults playing euchre like we had playing the Rappin Duke. We made him watch our show. When he left Regan and Addy fought over if "This is the Best song Ever" or "Just Do It" was better. Then Regan had to leave.

History Alive 13- The Revolutionary War

11/17/2015

Picture
Mr. Solarz had us get on line in tallest to shortest order. Then he divided us up into three groups represented as the White Team, the Red Team and the Blue Team. The Red Team had the tall kids then the white and blue teams had everyone else mixed up. They reason for this is most likely the taller kids might be stronger than the (SOME) of the shorter kids. The British (Red Team) had strong, prepared men who's job it was to fight in wars. As the Continentals (Blue) were all volunteers and were inexperienced men. The White Team (French) didn't need to win this war; it wasn't their biggest priority so maybe they didn't send their best men to die. Also the British had the strongest Army and Navy around.
Four of the Red Team members got to stand with the rope and the others had to stand on the stage. That showed how the British soldiers had to sail a three month journey over to America which was a disadvantage. The White Team (which I was on) all had to stand on the stage and come over last because the French didn't come and help for a while. The entire Blue Team stood at the rope ready to win.
The Blue Team/White Team won because the blue team had a prize, Mr. Solarz said he would give them (No blog post) which represented how the Continentals had a prize of a better future for them and their families and no more British taxes. The Red team didn't have a reason to win they would only be winning to win they would still have to do their blog post. Another reason the Blue Team won is because they were just playing defense all they had to do is make sure they Red didn't get the marker past a certain point. The Red had to get the marker past the point.
Another thing that happened is Jeremy was told even though he was on the Blue team if they won he would still have to do his blog post. That showed how some slaves fought in the war but still have to work for their master so they didn't earn their freedom. Lastly the White Team had to cheer for the Blue team until we helped them pull. So instead of sending over supplies and money we cheered then came and fought along side them.

Questions:

            1. Which team were you a member of?
            2. How did you feel at the beginning of the game?
            3. Who did you think would win the game at first (RED or BLUE)?  Why?
            4. How did you feel as the rules changed?  Did you get discouraged or more confident?  Why?
            5. What were the reasons why the BLUE team won?
            6. Historically speaking, what happened once America won the Revolutionary War? What changed in America? Why was it important that America won the war?
            7. What would have been different if America had lost the war?

Answers:

  1. I was part of the white team. (The French)
  2. I felt good because I figured out the first part of the metaphor when Mr. Solarz told us to line up in tallest to shortest.
  3. I thought the blue would win because the Continentals won the war in real life.
  4. I felt better because now there were more people on the white team and combined with the blue team we had to win.
  5. First of all they had more people and then even more people from the white team; and they had a prize to win the red team didn't .
  6. Americans didn't have to pay unfair British taxes. Also America had more land and was a free country now. They could do anything make more fair laws and such.
  7. I don't even know where to start; so much would be different George Washington might not have been president which means none of the men we now as former presidents might not have got their tim to shine. Britain would be different too.

School Wide Nonfiction Reading Lesson 6

Topic: A hawk who is shot by an arrow.

Type of nonfiction: Literary

Point of view: Third Person

Information the author really wants us to know
  • The resilience of a hawk.
  • Humans shouldn't interfere with animals.
  • That you shouldn't hunt animals.
  • How strong brave and this hawk was.
Picture
Stop and Jots:
  • Oh No!!!!!! Hawk was shot. This book has very descriptive words and I feel bad for him. This hawk seems very resourceful and smart. I think this book will describe all of hawk's hardships.
  • "Ahhhhhhhh" Now hawk just broke his leg to get free from the tree. I already feel very sad for the hawk so it means that this author is very good.
  • I think that some animal rescuers are rescuing hawk because he was in a town and he was attached and then was taken away in a warm box.

Summarize Why the author wrote this.

I think the author wrote this book to send a message to everyone who reads this that we humans shouldn't interfere with the lives of animals and that they have it harder than us because we have zero predators and we are at the top of the food chain. Also hunting animals is wrong and rude; but helping animals get better from a human interference is the right thing to do and that the    people who helped hawk were very noble.

Before Reading
How does the title help me know what this text is going to be about?
I think Henry is an escaped slave or is escaping and he has a box of stuff that is his freedom box.
What do I know about this topic or subject?
The underground railroad was a slave's one way ticket to freedom.
What questions do I have?
How long was the underground railroad and what is a freedom box?
What type of nonfiction is this? How does that help me prepare for this read?
I think this is Literary Nonfiction. So it will be like a story book.
Is there a particular way that the text is structured?
I think it is a story.

During Reading
What do I understand?
I think Henry is very still because I think his wife is right and he does too. Henry's family was sold to different places. So Henry is very sad.
What is unclear?
Is Henry's entire family being set free and he is going on to work because he said goodbye. Is the master's son going to be really mean because the old master was nice and kind good to his slaves.
What new questions do I have?
Why can't slaves sing out loud? How will Henry mail himself? What is oil of vitriol because it is very bad, it burned him to the bone. I wonder how many slaves mailed them selves out because it worked for Henry?
After Reading
What have I learned?
Henry Box Brown was a real person. That mailing yourself actually worked.
What are the important ideas that stuck with me?
That slaves were not aloud to know their birthday.
What new or lingering questions do I have?
How did Henry find oil of vitriol how was that used back then and why?

Sybil Ludington Museum Letter

                                                                                                 September 24, 1829

              Hello John Adams,

I was requested to send you a letter as I heard they were going to make a pamphlet informing others about all the heroes that helped us become a free country. I am flattered that you have asked me of this great task and I am happy to help. I believe that if you were a patriot then you greatly helped us become a free country, but this sounds like a great idea. If you have any concerns please contact me.
First of all I am Sybil Ludington daughter of Henry Ludington. At about nine o’clock at night on the twenty sixth of April in seventeen seventy seven I rode through several towns alerting everyone about the British attack, telling them to get ready. With my prized stick I knocked on doors and even defended myself from a highwayman. I rode through Carmel then onto Mahopac, then to Kent Cliffs, from there to Farmers Mills and back home. I rode to warn the Patriot militia, and the farmers that the British attack is coming. At the time I was only sixteen. There were many dangers and close calls, I hid behind trees and waited until the marching British soldiers passed. It was scary yet exciting and an amazing ride for sure. If I had to pick some things that are important to me it would probably be the stick that I became well known with, and my horse Star. Also maybe the lovely American Flag that we Americans proudly represent. At sixteen my mother expected me to be responsible and to act lady-like but; I wanted to be in the militia because I was tired of being ruled by Great Britain. Just like everyone else, I wanted to be free and independent.
I hope I gave you enough information. Thank you again John Adams and anyone else who is behind this.

              Yours Truly,

              Sybil Ludington

Sybil Ludington wanted to be in the militia, but her mom wanted her to be lady-like, so when a tired messenger comes to their house asking if anyone of them could continue on for him Sybil begged her parents, and her dad let her go then she rode forty miles warning everyone about the British attack.

The Loyalists wanted the thirteen colonies to remain in British clutches, but the patriots won the war, so most of the loyalists move back to Britain then live there the rest of their lives.
