    Asking Questions While Reading Nonfiction
Readers of nonfiction ask themselves questions before, during, and after reading. We do this to activate prior knowledge, build understanding, and monitor comprehension.

Before Reading
How does the title help me know what this text is going to be about?
The title makes me think that Henry was a slave and he got to escape.

What do I know about this topic or subject?
I know that the slaves could escape with the underground railroad and it takes a long time to get there.

What questions do I have?
I wonder who came up with the underground railroad and how did they not get caught?

What type of nonfiction is this? How does that help me prepare for this read?
This is literary non fiction book. it helps me know that it will kind of be a story book.

Is there a particular way that the text is structured? It is structured as a story.
During Reading
What do I understand?
I understand that the people that want slaves purposely take them away from there family.
I also understand that the masters would let them live together because they probably understand that they really liked each other.

What is unclear?
Why did Henry want to forget what his wife wanted to say?  I don't understand why he would want to burn his skin to the bone.

What new questions do I have?
Will Henry ever see them again?
Why did the master only give Henry over to his son? Why do you think that Henry's new owner is so mean?
Why do you think that they would not let the slaves sing on the streets? Is the whole family going to get separated and never see each other again?  How will Henry mail himself to a place where he could be free? I wonder what oil ofvetrial is? I wonder how many other slaves went on the underground railroad
After Reading
 What have I learned?
I have learned that Henry Box Brown.

What are the important ideas that stuck with me?
Henry was a good worker so his master gave Henry to his son. 100,000 slaves out 400,000 slaves got freedom. They were not aloud to know there birthdays.

What new or lingering questions do I have? I still wonder what will happen to Henry and his knew family?

Stop and Jots:
  • Jack went to go sit down with his friends and when they got their lunch they went to go sit at another table And a teacher told them to go sit by him but Jack left and went to go sit by Augie and Summer. I felt so bad for Jack I wanted to scream no! because it would have been so embarrassing!
  • Why would Via just say this is Jack in a bad tone instead of trying to be nice and Say that is Jack in a good tone. I would have been so disappointed for somebody that I just met kind of say something kind of mean to me.
  •  Justin was taking about Augie in his head and said mean stuff about him and said jack was  a normal kid. Why do you think he would of ever say something like that? I think that is rude because what if he tells Via and they break up because of it all because of Augie and Via would be mad at Augie maybe because it is all of his fault that he looks like that.
  • Via is worrying that Justin would never come back because when she was a kid the kids would never come back for a second playdate. I would worry a lot because even her good friends didn't come back for a second playdate.
  • Justin is going to meet Via's parents. I would be so scared to meet the dad because usually is very hard on the people that are dating there daughter they get very mad and make them break up because of that.
  • Justin's mom and dad got divorced  and he has to sped half of the time in a nice house and the other half in a poor house. I feel so bad for Justin because his parents don't care about him and they don't even know what instrument he is playing. His family has never even said I LOVE YOU I feel so bad for him.
  • DUN DUN DUN: Justin got the lead role and Via didn't but Miranda did. I think Via is going to get jealous and break up with him.

Reflection Questions:
  1. Which Conversation Starter above is Mr. Solarz' favorite?  Why?
  2. Which Conversation Starter above is your favorite?  Why?
  3. Describe one conversation you have already started in your Literature Circle.  What was the question and how did the discussion go?

Answers:
  1.  His favorite conversation starter is something is confusing me. He likes this starter because at the end of the year so many people don't know what they read in lit circles. Sometimes I need my mom to reread the pages that I did not understand.
  2. I like the first conversation starter because I usually ask those kind of questions. I like to ask those questions because they seem to be harder to answer than some of the other ones.
  3. We have had many discussions Long one of them was a big one though. When I asked if everybody liked the book  we had a big talk about how we liked the book and asked many more questions in the video.( It was a four-minute video)

  1. What guideline above was new to you?  Why do you suppose we should follow that guideline.  If nothing was new to you, create one new guideline that we should all follow while discussing our reading. Explain why you think we should follow that guideline.
  2. Name a guideline that you might have neglected to follow in the past.  Did anything bad happen?  What could have happened?
  1. The newest guideline to me was to watch my partners body language for when I could start talking.  I should follow this guideline because it would help me not talk over people.
  2. I have not neglected any guidelines in the past. If you didn't follow any of these guidelines you and your group would have a hard time understanding the book and what is happening.

  Stop and Jots:
  • Augie and Jack's relationship has heeled since Jack figured out who Augie was. I would be very happy to know that they are friends again. I was relieved that the became friends again. I wanted to cheer out loud and do a cartwheel across the classroom.
  •  Jack would kill him self if he were Julian and  I don't think he knows that Julian could see that some how And he could be in big trouble. I would always make sure that I wouldn't hurt somebody from what I  said. I wanted to shout out loud NOOOOOOO!
  • When Jack Came back only three people said hi the others just ignored him. I feel so bad for jack because every body is ditching him and going to sit with Julian. Nobody even went over to him and asked if they wanted him to sit by them. He had to go to the library and read for the rest of the day.
  •  Charlotte gave a note to Jack in his locker to meet after school. And she said That Julian had a big holiday party and Julian said to everybody that Jack Had emotional problems. I wanted to jump up and fall on the floor because of what she said. I feel so bad for Jack because Julian is getting all of the credit for the incident. Julian even had the nerve to to say that Augie was bringing him down and that they were not going be friends anymore. Jack was okay because he stopped being friends Julian before he even knew  what was going on with him and Augie.
Notes:
  • Make sure not talking over people
  • Say I politely disagree not I disagree
  • Try to use evidence from The text
  • focus one all of the book not just one part
  • try to recap the moment that you are about to talk about

Stop and Jots:
  • Poetry book. It doesn't look any thing like a poetry book. (do not judge a book by its cover.)
  • Micheal was a kid when he decided to be  a basketball player.
  • Micheal was the person who greeted everybody when they were ready to play. I wish that I could be  the  person  that  tells everybody to have a good game.
  • He was a amazing dunker. I would love to be able to dunk like that.
  • The author explodes the details with excitement. I would love to be the author of this book.
  • The author loves to say how much he defines the law of gravity. I love how descriptive the author is.
  • The author started to talk about the game of life.
  • They are talking about how they will choose a lot of paths inn life and how it could be good and bad.  I would be scared to pick a bad path.
  • Life is not perfect don't make it. People try to make life so perfect it  wastes so much time
  • Listen to to the people that love you not the people that don't. I will always try to listen to  the people that love me.
  •  We are at the time in life that we could make mistakes and try different things.  I will always try and make mistakes and when i fall down you always have to get back up.
  • Only you can choose what path you should take. Only you know whats right for you.

  1. One thing that would activate my schema would be... It is really close to the sun and they could get hurt. It is a very dangerous planet because it is the opposite of Earth.  They would have to have very special equipment so they don't get burned.  I would not want to have that job!
  2. I would imagine it being so hot  that everything would melt. I think it would be melting because it is so close to the sun and everything is so hot that many things could melt in a instant.  I would be really scared to have something on my head that is melting.

 Stop and jots:

  • A man  is living in a house that has been vacant for years
  • I think Henry is brave for moving into a house that has been vacant for 7 years. I would be afraid of the ghosts and spiders.
  • Henry did not think of fixing up the house. I would fix it up because something bad could happen
  • I wouldn't care what other people thought about my house. I would kind of care because some people would probably not like me.
  • The neighbors said the house was a disgrace a couple of  times so it is an Again And Again. I think they keep saying that because if they thought of moving there house wouldn't  sell as much as it should because of the old crummy house.
  • The neighbors made a commodity and came to his house and asked if they could fix up the house but he said no.
  • I think Henry is very polite. For Example, when the neighbors came to fix the house he didn't even say a word because if you have nothing nice to say didn't say it at all.
  • The neighbors threatened to send him to jail. which I think is very rude because he likes his house the way it is.
  • I am proud of Henry for ignoring all of the negative peer pressure. I agree with him to not fix his house because he probably liked
  • I am starting to wonder if Henry is rude know because he said know.
  • Contrast and Contradiction: The neighbors came and offered Henry pie and cake.
  • Words of the Wiser:The Mayor told the neighbors be nice try it twice.
  • Henry admitted that he was not neat and not the same. I think he is not renovating his house because his life style is to be messy and not the same.
  • Henry left because he probably had enough of the neighbors.
  • The neighbors were wondering were Henry went.
  • Aha Moment: The neighbors thought they should of done the things they were making him do. I think the neighbors should of done what they should of done right away.
  • The neighbors thought that everybody should be like them and started to judge him.I think they should of
  • Henry wrote to the Mayor that he wants to move back if he could let his grass grow and let his birds Rome , and he would meddle his fence and shovel his snow.
