Modeling Earth's Rotation (and Revolution)

2/21/2017

Questions:
  1. Why is it important to use models when explaining or teaching things?
  2. What are some limitations of models? (What makes them imperfect?)
  3. How did you decide on the model that you chose for this video? What made it the best model for the job? (Why didn't you choose a different model?)
Answers:
  1. It is important to use models because they show more understanding on what you are saying. They show examples that describe the actual event. Models give a good picture in you head about the actual explaining of "it". It is also easy to understand especially  if it is a difficult concept to just teach randomly.
  2. A thing that doesn't help with models is you need to use them properly and look to see if you are giving a good visual to the audience. They sometimes do not act as you want them to. Models to not show the actual size of the earth like they are not on that level.
  3. I chose a green ball, yellow ball and a flashlight (but I didn't use my styrofoam ball). I thought the green ball represented the earth and the yellow ball as the sun. I though the flashlight also represented the sun so it can show you how to show the differences on summer and winter. The yellow ball shows how the sun stays in one place and the green ball, the earth spins around the sun.

Notes

Rotation: A year
Revolution: A day
Fall and Spring is when direct sunlight appears.

State of Nature Story

2/17/2017

Picture
  1. Living in a state of nature would be fun because...
  2. I'm glad we don't live in a state of nature because...
  1. Because you can do whatever you want and be free from all horrible things. You can get free stuff and nothing cost money. I won't have to go to school or learn anything because you don't have to. You can play with your friends all day and have sleepovers! Your parents would not be hard on you about grades but in fact there is no grades!
  2. Because it would be crazy and people can hurt others and damage many helpful things. If someone asks for a favor you can refuse to do it and hurt their feelings. Many problems like fires, ilegal guns or even losing families.
*Although Mr. Solarz I love school and I love being I your class so so much! I love learning new things!*

 Tracking Shadows During a Day

  1. What patterns did you notice about the shadow length throughout the day?
  2. What caused these patterns?
  3. When you analyzed your shadow graphs, when did the longest shadows occur? Why?
  4. When you analyzed your shadow graphs, when did the shortest shadows occur? Why?
  5. What was the most challenging part of this lesson?
  6. What do you feel you learned from completing this lesson?
  1. First in the morning it was very long and wide because of the sun on an angle. After morning in the afternoon the shadow appeared very short and narrow because of the sun's position the light couldn't wrap around the battery to make a more bigger shadow. After past one it was back to long but it was actually even longer that before. It was even longer because the closer the sun gets to the horizon the more long and narrow the shadow is.
  2. The patterns were caused because f the angle of the sun. The sun shines onto the battery, but the battery it blocking the sun to show all the way around itself. That causes the angle of the sun to make the sides for narrow. That goes for the morning and the nighttime. During noon the sun is at its point were it is right up straight in the sky. Since their is no angle it can't make a longer shadow.
  3.  The longest shadows occurred at 9:20 a.m. and at 2:15 p.m.. Those occurred the longest shadows because since noon is the shortest shadow all the other times will be longer. As well as the angle of the sun making the sides of the battery grow as very long.
  4. The shortest shadows occurred at noon because of the form of the sun. There is no space for the sun to make a narrow side for the battery it just uses the top part to make it wide. Even though it does not make that much of a shadow to it.
  5. The most challenging part was details. We had to make sure the batteries shadow was precisely outlined and colored in. Also to make sure it was about the precise time so we know how the shadows.
  6. I learned about how the Earth lines up on different times and the sun appears in different spots. Showing how the sun makes different shadows. A new thing I learned as well is that way back when people could track the time by the form of the sun.

    Elizabeth Smith

I am Elizabeth Smith, a doctor from London, United Kingdom. It would be very important to have a doctor on the first manned mission to Mars because it would be safer and people can be covered with healthy lifestyles. I can save lives and help people become more healthy, suited and or ready for this mission. I am excited to go on this adventure because it is a great opportunity to learn life lessons and skills with the help of others. Learning more about other cultures and continuing to be a responsible person can be an adventure that I will take to Mars!
