Lesson 1: What Do We Notice About Poetry? Lesson 1: What Do We Notice About Poetry?

How does the poem look on the page?

  • The poem sort of looks like a kite because when you ride a skateboard, sort of you feel like your flying! It also looks like a face because the head is like the engine of the skateboard.
  • This poem is shaped the way it is because at certain places, there should be pauses. Like when the author says "drawn to our light,

What is the poem about?
What is its subject?

  • I think it's about a little boy or girl realizing that they are in control of the skateboard. The subject is realizing that you are in control of your own self.
  • I think this poem is about how enchanting it is to be with your family. I could also mean that summer is a magical time and creatures are very intriguing. The subject is magic in a metaphor.

Readers of nonfiction determine the writer's purpose for writing a text. We will consider how identifying an author's purpose helps them learn about a topic.
Topic: A Hawk that got shot with an arrow.

Type of nonfiction: Literary non-fiction.

Point of view: 3rd person`

Information the author really wants us to know
  • How the hawk was brave and fighting death.
  • How humans interfere with wildlife.
  • How humans can be nice to wildlife and how some don't.
  • How wildlife struggles.

So what's the point?
  • Summarize - What message does the author really want us to take away from the text, or what was the author's purpose in writing this text?
    • I think that this author might have wanted to show people how mean we can be to wildlife and how we can fix it. Hopefully I never see a shot down bird!
                 Stop and Jots:
  • This book seems to have very visual words. I had a very good visual when the book said that Hawk was screeching in pain! And that blood was flowing everywhere! I think that this book will be a survival story because the arrow will probably injure him badly.
  • I think Hawk it a survivor because he broke off his own leg to get part of arrow out! But he his hungry and tired. He also reopened the arrow wounds and every time he landed he was tired!
  • I wonder what is going on because when Hawk tried to capture a sparrow he got stuck in a net! Maybe a bird keeper will help him get back to good health.
  • My prediction was right! People helped Hawk get the arrow out and get him stronger! I wonder if he will be scared to go back to the wild? Will he get hurt again?

Which Type of Nonfiction is this an example of?
  • Literary Nonfiction
What we noticed about this type of Nonfiction?
I this non fiction is not saying "it" so the author says he and him. I think that it makes it more like a story but still gives us lots of information. You also have to read it to cover to cover.
Picture
Which Type of Nonfiction is this an example of?
  • Reference Nonfiction
What we noticed about this type of Nonfiction?
I noticed lots of facts about different types of lizards and no opinions. There were also captions.
Picture
Which Type of Nonfiction is this an example of?
  • Biography
What we noticed about this type of Nonfiction?
There were pictures but they were illustrated. They were telling facts but it was still like a story to me. I like how there were different biography in the same book.

  1. Stop and Jots are not notes.
  2. Stop and Jots are thoughts that you have while reading.
  3. These thoughts can be any kind of lit circle discussion or any type of thought that you would not share.

                          Stop and Jots
  • Via is compassionate. She cares about Justin enough to convince him that he is going to be okay remembering his lines. Not every girlfriend or friend helps friends that much.
  • I predict that Justin wished for a perfect family because in an earlier chapter he said that his family didn't really care about him. I think Via wished for a better life for Auggie because he is having trouble at school with Julian and other people. Should could have also wished to be in the play because Miranda got the part she wanted.
  • I think those three boys are Julian, Henry, and Miles because Henry and Miles are taller then the rest of the grade and Julian is about Jack's height. I hope that Justin can help Jack.
  • I predict that Justin will tell the boys that they are jerks because he seems to want to protect Auggie and Jack because those boys are mean to him.
  • I think Miranda really, really cares about Auggie because she has a picture of him in her wallet and she smiles when she thinks of him.
  • Auggie seems really upset that Daisy has passed away and he feels really bad about what he said before earlier. I hope that Auggie knows that Daisy will always be in his heart.
  • I wonder how Auggie will like the play because Via said it would be boring. I think she was lying though. Maybe he will be bored.
  • I wonder how Via and Justin feel when they got an standing ovation! When my cousin played Jane in Mary Poppins she had a huge standing ovation! She was so happy! I think that's how Via and Justin might feel.
  • I predict that Miranda is picking up Auggie because Via doesn't really do that! I'm really excited to read more!
  • I wonder how Miranda feels when she sees how happy Via is when she is not really including her. Maybe she really likes being popular but misses real friends.
  • Why would Miranda say she had a dog named Daisy and a deformed brother? I think she was jealous of Via.
  • I really think that Ella doesn't care that much about Miranda because she didn't tell Miranda that she was being stupid for changing herself and  only wanted to hear about the boys. But still Miranda should have realized this.
  • I think that Miranda really cares about Auggie because she made sure that the play didn't offend him because they were going to do the elephant man which is about a deformed man.

                          Stop and Jots:
  •  I predict that Jack will end up sitting at August's and Summer's table because people don't really want to sit with Jack. He is really embarrassed  because the boys at his table tried to get away from him at lunch!
  • It is a memory moment when Jack remembers the first day of school when he didn't sit with August! He just needed a break from his "Job" and that's okay! He just wanted to do what he was used to!
  • Summer and August are being really nice because they are letting Jack sit at their table even though people will be mad at them for letting Jack sit with them! He is starting to see what Auggie's world is like because people aren't talking to them and ignoring them! Poor Jack.
  • I wonder how Via and her boyfriend will end out. Maybe there will be drama because of August's differences.
  • I think that Justin is embarrassed because of his fiddle because the boys thought that it was a machine gun. Maybe he wishes it was a machine gun.
  • I wonder how Justin feels to see Auggie? Maybe he feels uncomfortable. I hope he is able to be nice to Auggie.
  • I'm interested that when Via was young her friends didn't come back for second play dates.  I hope that Justin comes back to her house.
  • I predict that Via's parents will really like Justin because he is a really nice guy, he listens to people, and he cares about Via.
  • I wonder why Justin's parents are neglectful. I think it is because they have a divorce. I feel really bad because my parents are not.
  • I think that

  • I predict that August will forgive Jack because he seems really happy in the text. He said " Did you really punch Julian!" I hope they are going to be friends again!
  • I really hope that Julian is not being a jerk to Jack because he punched him. I predict he will because of the stupid things he has said.
  • It was again and again when people kept ignoring and being rude to Jack. It happened at lunch, in the morning, and in classes! Julian must be really mad!
  • I predict that Charlotte will give Jack the inside scoop about why people are being rude to Jack! I know this because there was a note in his locker from Charlotte.
  • Julian is being a huge jerk because he told everybody that Jack has emotional problems and that he snapped under the pressure of being friends with August at his huge holiday party! That jerk!

If you were about to read a book about about an astronaut who went to Venus, what are three or more things you might think about before reading that would activate your schema?

If the book said, "The astronaut's helmet began to melt..." what would you imagine the cause was?  Why would his or her helmet be melting?  Use your schema to answer this question.
1. I would think about if I wanted to read another book.
2. I would wonder why the astronaut is going to Venus.
3. I would think about the astronauts gender.

I would think that because Venus is super hot and close to he sun and if the helmet didn't have top protection it would melt.
                               Stop and Jots
  • The dedication is a words of the wiser because the author wants us to become something great and the book is probably not just poetry. It's about inspiration.
  • Michael is a great player because they show him with wings. He really is great.
  • He can jump so high they show him as an eagle! He can really dunk.
  • It is really descriptive when the author said " He stands right there clutching to that little piece of air." It is descriptive because it means that the is like flying!
  • Life is like a game because we can choose were we go, what we do.
  • Some day we all have to choose a path. Like, will I choose to be a lawyer or doctor?
  • Family and friends will always love you even when you fall or do something wrong!
  • My life is at mid morning because I'm a child
  • It is a call to action because the book said " The time to prepare is now."
  • Follow your heart and remember who you are! Don't make anyone else do what they want to do.

                              Stop and Jots:
  • Jack seems sorry about punching Julian but is not telling  Mr. Tushman about why he punched him! I would do the same thing if I were him because it would just make things worse!
  • Julian's mom is not happy that Auggie is going to Beecher prep because she says he is a special needs kid! He is the same as everybody but he just looks different! If I were Jack Will, I would hate that women!
  • Mr. Tushman is really nice because he just seems to know that Jack punched Julian for a person and he is protecting August! He told Julian's mom that August is not a special needs kid, nor handicapped! I think that Jack and August are really lucky to have Mr. Tushman as a principal!
  • There was a Dun Dun Dun when Auggie got Jacks message saying he knows why he is mad! When he answered he said "Did Summer tell you?". I think that Jack will tell him the truth that Summer gave him a hint.

1.  What did you think of this book? What did you like and what did you dislike? I liked that Jessie was so kind to send a ticket to her Grandma and I loved how lace was a big thing in this book because when Jessie made pockets and collars for people it probably made their day! I didn't really like that we didn't get to read about how the wedding went!
2.    This was historical fiction. What do you like about historical fiction and what don't you like?  I love historical fiction because it's like we are living through their life! I don't really don't like that sometimes the story can get boring!

3.    When the book ended, what were you thinking about? What are you still wondering or wish you'd know more about? Why do you want to know? I wanted to know how the wedding went! It must how been so beautiful!

                           Stop and Jots:
  • Jessie was poor and her parents are dead. She tries her mothers wedding ring! She must miss her.
  • Jessie was sent to school even though boys usually were the only ones! She also taught her grandma. Grandma also taught Jessie the skill of sowing! And in Jessie's school the Rabi leader was the teacher.
  • Before the Rabbi's brother died he sent him a ticket to America but he can't go because he can't quit his job. But he said someone had to go in his place.
  • The rabbi had lots of requests for choosing the people! He said he was going to sleep on it.
  • The Rabbi decided that Jessie will go and help the rabbi's brother wife get over her grief. But she doesn't want to leave her grandma. If I were her I would be really frightened!
  • I wonder why Jessie gave her grandmother her wedding ring? Didn't she want it?
  • I predict that Jessie will take the widow as a mother but still miss her grandmother.
  • Grandma's sowing lessons have helped Jessie because now she is helping people on the boat.
  • I predict that Lou will become friends with Jessie.
  • Jessie misses her grandma when she see's America  because she is the only family she had left.
  • I think that Jessie is excited because she is in America but is sad because she forgot to say goodbye to Lou, her knew friend!
  • It was a words from a wiser because her grandma taught her how to save money! And she has been using the method.
  • Jessie was learning English and reading lots.
  • One day in the winter she found Lou again!
  • I predict that Jessie and Lou will get married because on the ship they had a romantic moment!
  • I think that Jessie is not missing grandma as much!
  • Jessie is getting married to Lou!
  • I hope that she will have a really nice wedding!
  • The money she was making was for a ticket to America for grandmother!
  • I hope grandma doesn't get sick!
  • Grandma tried to live to give Jessie the wedding ring! I love Jessie!
