WEXPN2-Focusing on a Moment

On Sunday I was at the Samuals House and Rachel, Regan and I were making up "exercises" to songs by crazy artists. Like Crazy Frog. We whipped out hair up, down, left, and right while doing the old grandpa dance. We were also doing our exercise to the Rapping Duke and the guys who sings "The Best Song Ever." even though I hate that song.
We did some new exercises to Hey Micky, and I love rock and Roll.
The best part of the night was that my dad started to whip his head around when we played the Rapping Duke! It's his favorite song of course. But when Regan left we had to use Lucas's iPod and everybody wanted to see us jam. Even my baby sister the thug (Millie) liked us!
It was so epic when Rachel and I collapsed on the couch and all the little kids jumped on us! Then we finally kicked them all out and started watching TV until we couldn't be more tired.
We tried to keep our eyes open but Scooby Doo was not our style! So we asked our moms for their phones so we could watch YouTube. Luckily, Mrs. Malik said yes. So we watched minecraft videos that were actually interesting!

What I Did on the Weekend

I had a playoff basketball game.
I had a Feeder basketball scrimmage.
I went to my grandma's house.
I cried when we lost my second playoff game.
I played basketball in my driveway.
I went to my sister's basketball game.
I played MineCraft.
I watched Maze Runner.
I read a book.
I did my homework.
I played monkey in the middle with Addie and Charlotte.
I babysat my little sisters.
I texted my friends.
I did some of my blogs.
I planned what activity's I would do on the plane to Disney World.

What I Did om the Weekend

I had to switch my reversible and was playing on the White team for the scrimmage. I made a pass that lead my team to the basket. I watched older girls play for awhile. I went out to the hallway to make Charlotte to share her fruit snacks with me. Then I went back and dribbled a bit. Charlotte, Molly, Addie and I played Monkey in the middle. I got yelled at by Addie for not watching the game. Mrs. Hammond took me home.

Readers of nonfiction determine the writer's purpose for writing a text. We will consider how identifying an author's purpose helps them learn about a topic.

Topic: A Hawk that got shot with an arrow.

Type of nonfiction: Literary non-fiction.

Point of view: 3rd person`

Information the author really wants us to know

How the hawk was brave and fighting death.
How humans interfere with wildlife.
How humans can be nice to wildlife and how some don't.
How wildlife struggles.

So what's the point?

Summarize - What message does the author really want us to take away from the text, or what was the author's purpose in writing this text?
- I think that this author might have wanted to show people how mean we can be to wildlife and how we can fix it. Hopefully I never see a shot down bird!

Stop and Jots:

This book seems to have very visual words. I had a very good visual when the book said that Hawk was screeching in pain! And that blood was flowing everywhere! I think that this book will be a survival story because the arrow will probably injure him badly.
I think Hawk it a survivor because he broke off his own leg to get part of arrow out! But he his hungry and tired. He also reopened the arrow wounds and every time he landed he was tired!
I wonder what is going on because when Hawk tried to capture a sparrow he got stuck in a net! Maybe a bird keeper will help him get back to good health.
My prediction was right! People helped Hawk get the arrow out and get him stronger! I wonder if he will be scared to go back to the wild? Will he get hurt again?

Before Reading
1. How does the title help me know what this text is going to be about?

2. What do I know about this topic or subject?

3. What questions do I have?

4. What type of nonfiction is this? How does that help me prepare for this read?

5. Is there a particular way that the text is structured?

1. A little negro boy is on the cover and the word freedom is on the cover. So it was probably a story about a slave. And the underground railroad was in the title.

2. The underground railroad was a way for slaves to get to freedom.

3. Why did they call it the underground railroad? How many people helped the slaves.

4. This book is literary non-fiction because there are illustrations not photographs and Henry was not a real person.

5. I think that this book will be from Henry's point of view because his name is on the cover and it would be interesting to see a slave's point of view.

During Reading
1. What do I understand?

2. What is unclear?

3. What new questions do I have?

1. Henry is leaving his family and probably never going to see his family again since his old master is dying. Some people let their slaves free. Henry's new master is very mean because he would beat him if he messed up.
Nancy and Henry are married and they had kids! But Nancy's master might sell the children which is very bad! Henry is now free and has a birthday!

2. Why is he in the streets and why aren't slaves allowed to sing? Will Nancy's master sell their kids? How will Henry escape. How will Henry survive being mailed to freedom. What is oil avitrial?

3. Will Henry ever see his family again? How did the men know Henry?

After Reading
1. What have I learned?

2. What are the important ideas that stuck with me?

3. What new or lingering questions do I have?

1. 100,00 slaves escaped slavery. Henry Box Brown is a real person. Henry never saw his family together.

2. That Henry never saw his family again. Henry and Nancy's masters let them marry.

3. What happened with Henry's family, both of them. Did Henry have anymore kids with his new wife?

Dear King George III,

My name is Chainbreaker and I received the letter you sent me. I will fight for you. But first I might as well tell you a little bit about myself.

I am a war chief of a five nation tribe and I have soldiers to fight with me that are fully trained. I will also help you train new soldiers but you have to assure my tribe’s safety with this. With the best soldiers gone, we are not safe.

But I assure you that with us on your side you're sure to win. Maybe my whole tribe could move to the camps. The women could cook food and make clothes. And the boys could hunt and make weapons. We will win this war and get you your rule back.

I only request that I keep a few things with me. I want my hat because it shows that I am important and in charge of war. I want my spear because I am very strong with it and that is what us men like to fight with. Besides bows and arrows. And of course I will need a British flag to represent us in battles.

But I will only fight with spears and swords so I hope you can get me into the war somehow. Also please get me another name. Maybe an English one.

Governor Blacksnake wanted to join the British army, but he was Native American and Native American tribes stick together. So he suggested that the tribe stay with him and help the British army. They would do the laundry, hunt and cook food. This was very helpful. Then when he fought for the British he was very successful and lived a very long life. Almost 120 which is very long.
