Hi Mr. Solarz! I hope your new class of 5th grade students is awesome! I hope your year is going really well! Have you started mystery skype's yet? I really want to come visit you again but it's been really busy this year! We have a lot of tests and quizzes to study for and a boat load of homework every night! You were the best teacher ever, you improved me soooooooo much and you definitely got me ready for middle school! You taught me leader ship skills and a million other things! The subjects now are much easier then what I expected because you gave us the right tools and environment! So I hope your first month 1 1/2 of school have been AMAZING!!!

So we are about 1/3 of the way and we've been on the trail for about 1 and 1/2 months! We decided to take a break and rest our oxen for a long journey ahead of us. We traded our oxen for newly rested oxen. We got an update on Matilda Faulk's foot and it is a lot better. Iskandar Alatas is not doing good so we left him at fort Laramie for their doctors to take care of him. Alexandrine Haberle fell in love with a guy who works at Fort Laramie so she wanted to stay behind. And Kai Bon was sharpening knives and he cut his finger off.

Watery Earth Lesson 9 - Finding Bodies of Water on Map.

5/20/2015

  • What bodies of surface water did you find while examining the three maps?
  • Were there any types of surface water on the Arlington Heights map that you weren’t able to find on the Illinois map? If so, why?
  • Were there any types of surface water on the Illinois map that you couldn’t find on the United States map? If so, why?
  • What are some names of the bodies of water in Illinois and Arlington Heights? What bodies of water did you identify?
  • I found a lot of them. Oceans, Gulfs, Sounds, Bays, Seas, Inlet, Lakes, and Rivers
  • I found a lot of different lakes on the Arlington Heights map then the Illinois map. There are some small lakes and rivers that you can't see on maps that show more area.
  • Yes there were a lot. I think because the maps can only show so much of the world and there a little smaller then they probably should be.
  • I didn't really see any of the same lakes or rivers or anything else on the Illinois map that are on the Arlington Heights map. The differences are on the Illinois map there is the lake Michigan and Lake Chicago and other ones and I didn't see them on the Arlington Heights Map.

Sofia is Better Than me By:Emily

5/14/2015

One day there was a girl named Sofia who met a girl named Jamie and Jamie would always come in crying and she always thought that Sofia was better at gymnastics and in everything! “It is no fair” screamed Jamie as she walked in stomping her feet. “I don’t get it Sofia is so perfect in every thing and look at me!”

Just then Sofia came right back to the door and said “Do you want to race me?

Maybe but only if you try and let me win.” Please I begged her.

“Ok, I will try and just to let you know I am not better than you I just practice more thats all and I am not in a higher group for gymnastics I couldn’t get into your group so I had to get into this group if I wanted to do gymnastics”

We went outside and we had a race at first I won by 2 or 3 seconds so the second race we made it farther and I got creamed! I started to whine and I felt bad to do it in front of Sofia and I said sorry but she had to go to gymnastics.

I went inside and I still think Sofia is perfect she is so good at gymnastics and every other sport even if she only puts 10 minutes into something she automatically becomes perfect at it and I get beat by everything we do together.

“Everyone is perfect except me ahhhhhhhhhhh!” My mom comes in the room and asks what I am crying about and I just ignore her if I try and talk there would be a puddle of tears on my blanket. My mom tells me that this is ridiculous and I start crying more and more and my mom walks down stairs and then I scream into the pillow.

When Sofia gets home she comes over and she shows me the flipflop that she can do and I can barely do a handstand. I think to myself maybe I just should quit gymnastics and try basketball. When I pick up a basketball and ask Sofia to play 1 on 1 I try to shoot and when I do Sofia smacks the ball back and it hits my face. I can’t believe it how can she do that when she is shorter than me. I try to hold back my tears and one just runs down my face and I lick back up so Sofia doesn’t see me crying. Then we draw a hopscotch and of course I can’t make is all the way down on one foot and Sofia can!  “THIS IS NOT FAIR AT ALL!!!!

What is not fair?” Asks Sofia

You are so perfect and I can’t do anything!”

I go back inside to get ready for gymnastics and when I get there I try to do a flip flop and I of course fail! I fall on my head and now I have a really bad headache. When I get home I practice the flip flop and I finally am able to do it and then my brother Jacob is guarding me for basketball and I score and he is taller than me! I guess it takes me a little longer to get things but I can do them. I have learned my lesson that nobody is perfect! I guess I was thinking Sofia was perfect when I was just jealous that I couldn’t do it yet but now I can!

The Phantom Tollbooth

1. What type of person is Milo?
2. Do you think Milo is a good student? Why or why not?
3. Why do you think Milo acts the way he does?
4. Would Milo be someone you would like to be friends with? Why or why not?
5. Describe a time when you felt grumpy and dis interested like Milo.
1. Milo is a kind person. I think he is a risk taker, maybe a little bit of a trouble maker. He isn't very energetic and he doesn't get very excited.
2.  I don't really think Milo is a good student. I don't think so because in the very first part of the book when he came home from school he was scared because he thought his mom was going to find out what he did.
3.  I think he does because I think his parents don't really care about what he does. Also because his parents seem to not really care about him they just let him do whatever and they really haven't worried about him in the tollbooth.
4.  No I wouldn't really want to be friends but I would be nice to him. I wouldn't because he doesn't seem like a trustworthy person or someone who is like me because I am not a trouble maker and it seems like he is.
5.  I was grumpy when my mom wouldn't let me go shopping with my friends. I was really mad at my mom. I had to stay home and clean my room and I was so mad and grumpy all I did was put away my clothes.

My Water Molecules Journey

4/30/2015

Once upon a time I started out as a water molecule.  I was peacefully chilling on a slow moving river when I started to disappear.  I thought oh no my beautiful self why does this have to happen to me now. I was not made to evaporate in like this I should be warned I don't want to do this please help me. When I got to the clouds.  I was up in a cloud and I was having a party with all my buddies!  This is called condensation. I saw some of my friends slowly coming up to. Some of them were coming from the flowers like my friend she just came off the perfect flower. She joined up with me and we went on with our day. This is called transpiration. Then my friend Hanna came off a girls face. Wow I want to do that I thought. I tried to escape no no no let me gooooo!  Then I moved on and Ryan jumped off the cloud and landed flat on his face. Hahahahaha! I laughed so loud I made the cloud rumble.  I jumped off and did a back flip in the air and Splash! Wait what did I just splash! That was awesome. I fell right into a puddle of water. Then I looked up and saw some kids.  They jumped off this boat. I wish I could do that.  Then ewwwww. Someone stepped on me I was now stuck on a foot groooss.  I suddenly started to float again on the nice day I was trying to get a tan so I was chilling in the water just like before.  I wanted to go home so I tried to float to my home and go to bed but someone. jumped in after me and I was now stuck on someones face. I was not complaining now I was about to get a nice tan!

Lesson 6 - Drops of Water on Different Surfaces

4/28/2015

Surface

Stick

Rock

Flower

Water

Prediction

I think the stick will absorb the water and just be wet.

I think that the rock won't really do anything it will just get wet on the outside.

The flower will get wet and maybe it might fall apart depending on how weak or strong it is.

I think the water will just add into the water I already have.

Actual

My prediction was kind of correct but not really some of the water dripped down.

My prediction was right the rock did just get wet.

My prediction was not really that right the flower didn't get wet it just got bubbles of water on it.

My prediction was 100% correct.

Reflection

I was surprised when most of the water dripped off it.

I was not surprised with it I knew it would happen.

I was really surprised what happened with the flower and that it just formed a bubble of water.

I knew this would happen I was not surprised.
  1. Which materials surprised you the most? Why?
  2. Which materials do you still wonder about? How do you think water will respond to that material?
1.   The stick and the flower.  The stick because most of the water dripped off. The flower because the water just formed a bubble it was not what I expected.
2. I still wonder about the flower.  Because I did not think that this would happen to it. Now that I know  what will happen I will know what to expect next.
