My notes on the video

What do you know about NASA's plans to visit Mars?
How long will the trip take?
What supplies and equipment will the astronauts need to survive there?
What do you think are the risks of traveling to such a distant planet?
What would you want to bring with you?

1. It is very scary and you don't know what could happen. Anything can go wrong and you are stuck 250 miles away from home.
2. It is 250 million miles away. It will take 2 and 1/2 years to travel.
3. They will need oxygen and food and water they will need probably and extra suit. They need these necessities to survive. You will need some exercise tools to keep yourself good.
4. You can lose calcium and not stay in good shape. Also you will be in space so you can't get home in a minute.

Rockets have landed but not people
It is 250 million miles away
It's volcanoes are as wide as Missouri
It's tallest mountain soars 3 times higher than Mt.Everest
Some river valleys are as wide as the grand canyon is long.
Days on Mars are only a few minutes longer
But a year is twice as long
It is so cold that the water is all locked up in a polarize ice caps
A small piece of a meteor had fallen from space onto earth
Inside the meteor scientist found minerals
Mars used to be warmer and used to have flowing water.
Polar ice caps gave proof that water was still there
The scientists made a thing that can turn pee into water to drink on mars
People are making gardens to grow things to see if it will work on mars but an astronaut is concerned that it will harm them and have bacteria of carry a disease with the plant.
In mars since the gravity we do not walk on mars or in space ships we fly so our bones and muscles lose calcium and muscles lose strength so when we walk when they get back they can't
Astronaut Shannon Lucid broke the record for 6 months in space.

If the World Were a Village

Earth is a crowded place it is getting more crowded each day.
At the end of 2011 there were 7 billion people around the world.
China has over 1 billion people living there, they have the most people living there.
61 people in the village are from Asia.
14 are from Africa.
11 from Europe .
8 from South America.
1 is from Ocean aria.
More than half of the people come from 6 most populated countries.
20 from China
17 from India
5 from the United States
4 from Indonesia
3 are from Brazil
There are almost about 6,000 different languages in the world
In the Global village more than half of the people speak 8 languages
9 speak English
9 speak Hindi
7 speak Spanish
4 speak Arabic
3 speak Potatoes
3 speak Russian
1/5 are 9 years or younger
More than half are under 30
9 are children are under age 5
10 are children in between 10 and 19
Than the 17 are 20 and 29
Than there are the 15 of 30 and 39
Than there are 12 that are in between 40 and 49
Than there is the 6 that is 60 and 69
Than there is 3 that are 70 and 79
Than there is the 1 and that is 79 and over.
At the rate of the growth, the village will increase by 12 people every 10 years.
In the global village there are many different religons

21 are Muslim
13 are Hindus
9 practice shamanism
6 are Buddhists
2 are other global religious
1 is Jewish
15 are non-religion
The villagers have many animals like:
31 are sheep and goats
23 of them are cows, bulls, and oxen
15 are pigs
3 of them are camels
2 are horses
250 chickens - yes, there are more than twice as many chickens as people in the global village!
Other than all the animals there are a bunch of different foods like, grains,bread,and other foods.
30 people in the village do not have a reliable source of food and are hungry some or all the time.
17 people are severally undernourished and are always hungry.
So, 47 of the people in the village do not have food security - they cannot always be sure they will have enough to eat. The other 53 villagers are food secure - they have enough food to survive and even thrive.
In most of the village the air is clean in other parts it isn't clean and some water is clean but other water isn't clean.
87 people have access to a source of safe water.
62 have access to adequate sanitation - they have public or household sewage disposal - while 38 do not. They are at risk of of diseases.
68 people breath clean air and 32 don't have clean air they may get sick or diseases from the air pollution.
For some people have school and for others they don't or they can but they have to work.
There are 36 schooled - aged villagers (ages 5 to 24). But only 30 of them attend school. There is 1 teacher for all of these students.
The other 6 students could go to school. Three of them work around the house or on farms. The other 3 are child laborers. They work in fields factories, they might sell things or be child soldiers.
14 percent of the people in the world today cannot read or write.
More males know how to read and write than females because they went to school.
The richest 10 people out of the 100 have 85 percent of the money.

1. How did the gelatin in Cup 1 change? Did its ability to pass through the filter change?
2. Did the enzyme powder cause the change in Cup 1? What evidence do you have to support your answer?
3. What was the one difference between Cups 1 and 2? Was there a change to the gelatin in cup 2?
4. Which material from our lab was a metaphor for the bloodstream? In which cup did the gelatin’s nutrients reach the “bloodstream”?
5. Based on your experimental findings, why do you think it’s important for the food you eat to be digested?
6. How is food digested in the digestion system? What type of digestion did the model demonstrate?
7. What do you think would happen if you ate lots of food but couldn’t digest it? Would you still be hungry? Would you have lots of energy? Would you perform well in a sports competition? Explain!

1. It became very liquidity and leaked through the coffee filter. The water broke down the jello so that is why I think it leaked through
2. Yes, it did the enzyme broke down the jello. It became water and very liquidity.
3. The differences in the cups was the cup 1 became more liquidity and just like water. Cup 2 is still jiggly but over time it became more watery.
4. I think the coffee filter because it acted like the blood steam because it absorbs the nutrients into it. And that is what the capillaries do.
5. I think it is important because if they weren't digested then we wouldn't have all the fat on ourselves and we wouldn't be able to last as long without food or water.
6. It demonstrated chemical digestion. Cup 2 had a little bit of mechanical digestion.
7. You would still be hungry. It wouldn't be digested so it wouldn't fill you up.

We are having a great Lit circles day and finishing our book Half Magic (great book) . Reading our last page of it. The book is so interesting and fun to read.

Interview (I am Jane).

I Wonder
When snakes shed their skins they are on their bellies and they
pull real hard to get their skin off. It takes them a long time about
a yard they have to move forward. Once they are done their skin usually
comes out in one long piece. It is sticky and silky too.

A Review Of My Book
My book I read was Half Magic. It was so good I liked it when they
would surprise you with a new wish. I didn't really like it in the beginning
because it wasn't really that good or active. But otherwise I loved it.

Jackie Kemph played at Rolling Meadows.

Jackie and Ally Kemph are twins and they are awesome basketball players that played at Rolling Meadows.

Basketball is my absolute favorite sport! I play a lot of it with a lot of my friends. I play for the feeder team of Rolling Meadows Mustangs, with all my friends from school and from my neighborhood.

    I was eating a cheese sandwich on a grey miserable day. There was literally nothing to do not a cloud in a sky. It was pouring rain, nobody was outside. All I could see is the golfball sized hail falling from the dreaded sky.
    I was suddenly in a deep dream about being in the desert with hyena friends. And then I was on his back about to climb a tree.
    I awoke and realized that the day was still the same and nothing was as disastrous as this boring day at home. I waited until the day was over.

Breathing Through Straws

What was the purpose of breathing through the straws?
While breathing through the wide straw, were some of the activities more difficult to do than others? If so, which ones?
How does your breathing change as you become more active? Why do these changes happen?
Why do you think that breathing through the wide straw caused the effects that you described?
Did breathing through the thin straw affect you differently than breathing through the wide straw? If so, explain why you think this occurred.
Why do you think you were asked to breathe through the thin straw for 20 seconds instead of 1 minute?
Why do you think you were not asked to walk or run while breathing through the thin straw?
How would your daily life be affected if you could only breathe in small amounts of air with each breath?

1. The purpose of breathing through the straws was to get the feeling of how it felt to have bronchitis and asthma. It felt very hard.
2. Yes some were much harder than others. The running in place with the wide straw was harder than the other ones like sitting in place and walking.
3. My breathing changed when the smaller straw came and I did more challenging things. I think they happen because we are challenging our lungs to do harder things and we took bigger breaths.
4. I think it caused those effects because I was doing different things each time. So it got harder to do.
5. Yes, it did affect my breathing because it is a much thinner straw. I think this occurred because I didn't get much air threw the passage way to get into my to get to my body.
6. I think I was asked to breath through thin straws because it would be much harder and we could hurt our selves or our lungs. Also because it was way harder to get air to your body so I had to take more deep breaths and if we did it for more we could have passed out because we were getting such little air to our lungs at a time.
7. I think we were asked to not run or walk in place while breathing threw the thin straw because there was only a tiny hole at each end. It would be way way hard to do especially since we are so used to be breathing through a big mouth.
8. It would affect me a lot because I love exerciser and I do a lot of basketball so if I had asthma I wouldn't be able to as much of my favorite things at one time. It would be much harder to run with my dad and my friend and do basketball practice and games.
