What I Think I Know About Mars

My notes on the video:

Some river valleys are as wide as the Grand Canyon is long.

Gravity there is less than half of what it is on Earth.
A year is twice as long.
They have made a machine that can turn urine into drinkable water.
Robots that they have sent there have found evidence that there is water on Mars.
To make some of the food, they need light, so they are trying to make energy so the plants can grow.

What do you know about NASA's plans to visit Mars?
How long will the trip take?
What supplies and equipment will the astronauts need to survive there?
What do you think are the risks of traveling to such a distant planet?
What would you want to bring with you?

1. I know that their biggest goal is to get people on Mars and have them survive. They have been trying to make ways for how people would survive there, and taking photos and getting evidence that people can live there.
2. The journey is 250 million miles. It would take about 2.5 years to get there. That would include 18 months on the martian surface.
3. What the astronauts need most is food and water. NASA has been working on ways to do that such as growing plants 10 to 20 times more density than they do in nature. They are also making sure that they have air and made a machine that turns urine into drinkable water.
4. I think the risks are getting enough food, water, and air. Knowing that it would take 2.5 years to get there, I think it is a risk because their machines could break down, and they wouldn't get enough food, water, or air.
5. I think the thing that I would want to bring most would be food and water to survive in case the things there aren't safe. Other than that, I would bring other things like books, movies, and pictures. I would bring a camera to take pictures of what it is like on Mars.

If the World Were a Village

At the end of 2011, the Earth's population was 7 billion people.
China has the most people in one country.
In an imaginary village with 1 hundred people would mean each person would represent 70 million people in the real world.
61 people are from Asia.
14 are from Africa.
11 are from Europe.
8 are from South America.
5 are from Canada and the United States.
1 is from Oceania.
20 are from China.
17 are from India.
5 are from the United States.
4 are from Indonesia.
3 are from Pakistan.
They all speak different languages. (There are almost 6,000 languages on Earth).
21 people speak Chinese and Mandarin.
9 speak English.
9 speak Hindu.
7 speak Spanish.
4 speak Arabic.
4 speak Bengali.
3 speak Portuguese.
3 speak Russian.
The village will increase 12 people every 10 years.
31 people eat sheep and goats.
23 cows, bulls, and oxen.
15 people eat pigs.
3 people eat camels.
2 people eat horses.
250 people eat chickens. (More than twice as many people i n the global village).
30 people in the village do not get enough for and are hungry some or all of the time.
17 people are severely undernourished and are always hungry.
NOTE: I really want to help more people get food so they aren't ałways hungry.
47 people do not have food over time or never have food.
87 people have access to safe water.
13 do not have safe water and have to work and get it.
62 people have access to adequate sanitation.
38 do not have it and can get diseases.
68 people breathe clean air.
32 people breathe air that is unhealthy because of pollution.
36 people are school-aged villagers.
30 of them do not go to school.
NOTE: I feel really bad for the people who don't go to school and cannot have education.
There is 1 teacher for the students.
6 village children could be at school but work instead.
14 people cannot read at all.
More males are taught to read than females.
14% of our world can't read.
63 people have jobs.
6 do not work.
5 go to school.
6 are retired.
The richest 10 people have nearly 85 percent of the world's wealth. Each has more than $87,500 a year.
The poorest 10 people each have less than $2 a day.
Villagers have 50 radios, 45 televisions, 92 telephones (more than 60 are cell phones), 22 computers, 2 trucks, 10 automobiles, and 16 bicycles.
76 people have electricity.
24 people do not.
NOTE: I am so shocked that there are so many people who don't have these important things and that some people are so spoiled at the same time.
Some people in the city get sick, and some do not.
Experts think that 250 people is the maximum amount for people in the village.
NOTE: After reading this book, it makes me want to help some people who don't have these important things that we have.

How did the gelatin in Cup 1 change? Did its ability to pass through the filter change?
Did the enzyme powder cause the change in Cup 1? What evidence do you have to support your answer?
What was the one difference between Cups 1 and 2? Was there a change to the gelatin in cup 2?
Which material from our lab was a metaphor for the bloodstream? In which cup did the gelatin’s nutrients reach the “bloodstream”?
Based on your experimental findings, why do you think it’s important for the food you eat to be digested?
How is food digested in the digestion system? What type of digestion did the model demonstrate?
What do you think would happen if you ate lots of food but couldn’t digest it? Would you still be hungry? Would you have lots of energy? Would you perform well in a sports competition? Explain!

1. The gelatin in cup 1 changed color and changed by going through the cup. That was unusual because the gelatin by itself didn't go through the cup, but with the enzyme powder, it did.
2. It did go through. My evidence is that in the cup with no enzyme powder it didn't go through, and with the enzyme powder, it did go through.
3. The main difference was how it reacted with the coffee filter. Cup 1 went through it and cup 2 didn't.
There was also no change to the gelatin in cup 2.
4. The coffee filter, because when the enzyme powder was added, the coffee filter was what the nutrients went through, like a bloodstream. The gelatin's nutrients reached the bloodstream in cup 1 because that was the cup where the enzyme was added.
5. It is important for you to eat food to be digested because our cells need nutrients. When our food is digested, we use the nutrients to make energy and the rest goes out our anus.
6. Food is digested in our body by taking all the nutrients and water our body needs, and getting the rest out. This model demonstrated that when it by keeping what it needed at the top, and what it didn't need went through the bottom.
7. I think that if we couldn't digest food, that we wouldn't be able to live. We would still be hungry because our body didn't get what it needed (nutrients and water) and wouldn't be able to produce enough energy to live. We wouldn't be able to play any sports because we wouldn't have the energy to do them. This shows how the digestive system is so important.

I was traveling in a forest and came to a halt. I was eating my chicken sandwich, and something else came my way. A grey hyena had come to me and was walking in circles around me. At that time, I was a miserable man. I had an idea. I ran and had to climb a tree. I got high on a branch and started panicking. The hyena started giving its evil laugh, and I knew the final solution, I through him the sandwich. It worked, he ran away once he had it in his mouth. That was classic traveling.

Breathing Through Straws

What was the purpose of breathing through the straws?
While breathing through the wide straw, were some of the activities more difficult to do than others? If so, which ones?
How does your breathing change as you become more active? Why do these changes happen?
Why do you think that breathing through the wide straw caused the effects that you described?
Did breathing through the thin straw affect you differently than breathing through the wide straw? If so, explain why you think this occurred.
Why do you think you were asked to breathe through the thin straw for 20 seconds instead of 1 minute?
Why do you think you were not asked to walk or run while breathing through the thin straw?
How would your daily life be affected if you could only breathe in small amounts of air with each breath?

1. The purpose of breathing through the straws was to feel how it was like to have asthma or bronchitis. I think this is important because I have asthma, and people should know how it feels when it is bad.
2. The running in place activity was the hardest. I had to stop because my chest was getting tight. It was hard because I couldn't get enough air and I couldn't do it much longer so I stopped.
3. It changes because you are breathing the same amount of are, and doing harder activities throughout the activities. It happens because you need a lot of air while exercising, because it needs to keep the muscles strong.
4. I think it did because it was thin. Also I think it was because it was long, and it took longer to inhale air through it.
5. I think it effected me differently because the wide straw was very wide, and I could get more air than I could in the thin straw. Even with the wide straw, it was hard when we were running in place because we needed more oyxgon and couldn't get it.
6. It did, but we only did it for 20 seconds so it was just about as hard as the running in place. But, my estimate is that it only felt that way because we ran in place right before that one and we were tired. I think we were because it as harder to breathe through the small straw, and not many of us would be able to do that.
7. I think it was because it was so hard to breathe in that straw, that we wouldn't be able to do it while walking or running, based on what we know. When we exercised, It was harder to get the oxygen because we need more.
8. I know this because I have asthma. Every morning when I wake up, I have medicine the I puff out and breathe it in through a tube. If I didn't have that, It would be hard because I wouldn't be able to run around without having my chest getting really tight.
