What Do We Know? Fairy Tales are fictional stories that usually contain a moral or teach a lesson. The most famous Fairy Tales were written in the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries. The Brothers Grimm, known for making classic fairy tales famous, collected stories written by friends and authors they could contact. In 1812, the Brothers Grimm published a book with 86 never-heard-of stories, like Cinderella and Snow White. They released many editions with more stories than the last. As the stories are retold and rewritten, some of their aspects change. When the stories are rewritten, they can be a toddler-friendly five-page summary or a two hour movie that details every part. Depending on the time the copy was written and what reading level it is, the story might change. What Did We Learn? We learned loads about the history of fairy tales. Although the Grimm Brothers are known for writing most fairy tales, they didn't write the ugly duckling. The author of the short story is called Hans Christian Andersen, whose stories inspired movies like Frozen, Thumbelina, and The Little Mermaid. Andersen published The Princess And The Pea, The Emperor's New Clothes. We also learned that Little Red Riding Hood was first named Little Red Cap, but the name changed when the English vocabulary changed. | What Do We Want To Know? We want to know why fairy tales change, the original was good right? Also “Can we Change Iconic Fairy Tales to Make them More Realistic?” And if it will be really hard to do this. Will it be harder to change different fairy tales over others? What Action Did We Take? With our learning about these fairy tales, we rewrote The Ugly Duckling and Little Red Riding Hood. We had them on a Google Document, but for our video, we copy and pasted the story onto a presentation for the "book" then we recorded ourselves reading the stories and put it on Youtube. | How Will We Learn The Information? By reading copies of the chosen fairy tales. We will try to get copies from different reading levels and publishing dates. If we have any small questions, we will look on the internet. What Questions Do We Still Have? I wonder why most people said if we were making Little Red Riding Hood realistically and The Ugly Duckling realistically that it should be humans. Rachel was thinking of an idea for The Ugly Duckling as a lady with her dogs but Giuliana thought they should be girl triplets; other people agreed with Giuliana with the people. Another thing we are wondering is why were these fairy tales made, because couldn't people just tell there kids "Don't stray from the path or you could be eaten by a magical hungry wolf!" |
Can we change the plot of iconic fairy tales to make them more realistic? Giuliana and Rachel10/22/2015 Reflection (Giuliana) I loved this Passion Time project for many reasons. First, Rachel was a very responsible and fun partner. I couldn’t have done this whole project without her. Second, I had the chance to create my own story and characters, giving me a pleasant freedom. I could really open my creative mind. The hardest part was probably agreeing on a story line for our fairy tales. Rachel wanted to be spontaneous with the story, but I wanted to keep it very believable. Although it was hard, it was fun! The rest of the project pushed my creative boundaries in writing. I can’t wait to work with Rachel again. This was a fun passion time project. I got to record myself reading Little Red Riding Hood. I got to read a bunch of versions of The Ugly Duckling and Little Red Riding Hood. Some of them were really funny and some were so boring I stopped on the first page. Giuliana was a reliable partner; when we had to do some typing at home all of it got done. Little Red Riding Hood didn’t get to know jujitsu like I advised but she was a fun partner. I couldn’t have finished this project without her. Also we got to come up with the story on our own (But staying close to the original plot line.) It was fun and challenging and I was happy I did this project.

Overall your project was really good. I love how you chose to do a writing topic and writing a story. I think that most people for passion time research about and it was really creative for you both to make this project. My question is did you work together on both stories? If not, to me it feels like you aren't working with your partner and thinking of it as a solo project. Overall great project. 😉👍

Thanks Brady! I totally agree with you about the working with the partner thing and how it would be a solo project. But I will assure you that Giuliana and I worked, planned, and revised our stories together. So it definitely was a group project. Thanks for the comment!

Thanks for the comment! Although we didn't write every word with each other, we made all the big decisions together (e.g the plot, the characters, their names, etc.)

Amazing job on this passion time project Giuliana and Rachel. I loved how you chose the Little Red Riding Hood story and the Ugly Duckling. One thing I feel that would make your passion time project even better would be if you wouldn't shake the computer so much when you do your video because the sound gets all fuzzy. Another thing that I really enjoyed about the project wa that the stories were really detailed and really cool since you made it a little different than the original fantasy stories. Overall, I really loved it! Nice job! =^.^=

Incredible job on both stories! I watched both videos and I think you did a very thorough job creating your project! I think your KWHLAQ was also very long (in a good way), and definitely explained everything. I love the idea for the project, and I think both stories were awesome! One thing I might try to work on in future rounds is to try to make the slides neater in general, because it looks more professional with everything organized. I think you guys did a great job with the whole project and your slideshow!

Thanks, Regan! The slideshow was a last-minute thing Rachel made so that we didn't have to read the stories out of the Google docs. I will remember your advice in the future.
