Milo just met the watchdog, Tock, in the Doldrums. Milo needed to find a way out of the Doldrums so that he could get to Dictionopolis.
"Excuse me, but I need to get out of here," said Milo. "I have a car, but it stopped moving and I got stuck here. Do you know a way to leave the Doldrums?"
Tock thought and thought, but he couldn't think of a way to leave. He had been here forever, and he would forever stay here in the musty old Doldrums.
"I'm sorry, but I really don't know. Maybe you could stay here with me."
Milo didn't want to stay in the Doldrums any longer. The laws were ridiculous and they didn't do anything other than sit around all day.
"Well, I don't know," Milo responded. "What would I do?"
"You could play with me or sit around with the Lethargarians."
Milo didn't want to stay here at all. But he suddenly realized that he didn't like to do much than sit around either. The Doldrums might be a good place where he could be lazy and not worry about anything.
"Sure," Milo said. "I'll stay."
The next few days were full of nothing. Milo lounged and relaxed with no regrets. He felt the leisurely days were the best of his life. Many days, he didn't even remember where he came from. He soon left all of the things he did in his own life to be with the boring Lethargarians.
One day, while he was enjoying his mid-morning nap, he felt something inside of him. He no longer felt emotions! Milo was becoming a part of the Doldrums. He lounged around as if he were a rock. He would have been classified a Lethargarian if he was not as tall as a little boy and did not look like a little boy.
