This is just a written reminder that on Thursday, October 9, the fifth graders are traveling to Olive School to visit a Historic Reenactment in conjunction with our social studies curriculum. Since the buses are scheduled to leave at noon, the fifth graders will be eating in their classrooms that day. We encourage the children to pack their lunches that day, but will be allowing those who need to purchase a lunch the opportunity to go to the commons around 11:30ish for lunches and milk. Hopefully, we will be able to be out of the way before the primary lunch begins at 11:35. Thank you!

Every Monday from 4:00-7:00, Bessie's Table Soup Kitchen is in need of volunteers to help set up, serve food, take down, and dry dishes. This is a great opportunity for your child to learn how fortunate they are and help those in need. I get one week off each month, but you are still welcome to work on those days! Here is the sign-up page:
http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0d4daead22a1ff2-bessies_ Here are some details: Please remember the following rules/details before signing up: (1) No children under 10 (unless we talk about it first). (2) There needs to be at least one adult for every two children that come. (I am allowed up to 4 people each week. If your group is larger, just let me know and I will make arrangements!) (3) Please try to arrive by 4:00 and expect to stay until 7:00. It can be tough getting out of Westgate and into Des Plaines by 4:00, so if you're a couple minutes late, we understand! (4) Your main responsibilities are to set-up the dining area, serve the meal, and put things away afterwards. (We can't have children working in the kitchen, so you will mainly work in the dining area.) (5) Here is the address: Bessie's Table First United Methodist Church 668 Graceland Avenue Des Plaines, IL 60016 Come to the main entrance (double doors in the parking lot) and ring the doorbell. When someone says, "Hello" say that you are a volunteer, and you will be buzzed in. Come downstairs into the dining area and someone will put you to work! :) LOCATION: First United Methodist Church in Des Plaines I've heard excellent things about Common Sense Media: https://www.commonsensemedia.org/educators/connecting-families?utm_source=Standalone-Connecting_Families_2014_09_16&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=weekly
