What did you learn about air in this session (that took a couple periods)? Hopefully, you learned at least three BIG IDEAS!
What evidence do you have to explain the phenomenon that air takes up space (we didn't prove this in our video, but learned it in the first days of the lesson)?
What evidence do you have to explain the phenomenon that air has weight?
When Mr. Solarz watches your video, will he be able to find problems with your "proof" that air has weight? Remember when we watched videos together as a class he mentioned a few ways teachers could trick their students - make sure you didn't use any trickery!
I learned that air has weight and there are lots of ways to show/prove it. Another thing I learned and how to prove it is that air takes up space. I also learned that air is matter because it has weight and takes up space. I already knew these things but I learned how show evidence that air is matter.
There is an experiment that you can do where you have a bowl of water an empty cup but it's really full of air and a ping pong ball that you place on top of the water. When you push the cup down on top of the ping pong ball the ping pong ball does not float to the top of the cup unless you let the air out which you do by pushing the cup in sideways. The ping pong ball will stay at the bottom of the cup all the way down and all the way up.
You can prove that air has weight by filling up two balloons and placing them on either end of a meter stick and placing something to hold it up directly in the middle. if they are level that means that the balloons are the same size. If you take the air out of 1 balloon you will see the meter stick will start to tilt towards the side that has the balloon that is filled with air on it. this proves is that air weighs something because one balloon had air and one balloon didn't and it started to tilt towards the side with the air filled balloon.
In my video which I did with Caitlin we showed we didn't use trickery because we showed that we put the string holding up meter stick on exactly the 50. Also we showed that there was nothing inside the ball that was inflated that it was tipping towards.
