| 1. My partner and I used the sense of sight by looking at the ruler. When we saw the other person let go, that was when we started to catch the ruler. I caught the ruler at 9 centimeters. 2. To do the sense of hearing, we closed our eyes and when one partner was about to drop the ruler, they would say,"3,2,1 Go!" and the other partner would catch the ruler. This worked out well, because |

This is a picture of my group reading our book, A Corner of the Universe by Ann M. Martin. This is one of my favorite scenes in the book. It is when Adam is at the carnival for the first time with Hattie and Leila. He is awestruck by the magical Ferris wheel lit up in the night. He says it is magic. I like this scene because when I read it, I could picture the scene in my mind. I felt like I was Hattie and watching the carnival light up in the night. I sat at the lunch table staring at my peanut butter and jelly sandwich. I was too tired to eat anything.
Alison looked at me and said,”Kendall, why aren’t you eating?” I replied,”The day has me in a sour mood.” I gazed at the gray sky just outside the doors. I heard a clap of thunder that sounded just like the cackle of a hyena. A dark and somber feeling started to climb up my body and settled in my brain. A headache just made this day even more horrible. Just what I needed on this miserable day.
I had a lot of fun during this activity. I liked that we did five different activities and our heart rate rose as the activities became more strenuous. I finally learned about why your heart rate would sometimes be fast and sometimes be slow, depending on what activity you were doing. I hadn't known that before. It was really crowded with everyone running and jumping around. In the beginning, everyone was counting their heartbeat while doing the activity, but we were supposed to do it after, so we had to start over. It was hard to count with all of the other people making noise.
A Day With No Rules By: Kendall F. I hate that I can’t have sleepovers. I want to have one so badly. Every time I ask my mom, she says, “Not right now. I will talk about it with your dad.” She never does. Then I wait awhile and ask again. I’ve asked for three years, starting when my friend Aubrey asked me to a sleepover in the summer and my mom said no. Almost every kid I know can have a sleepover. Why can’t I? My friends have them all the time, and whenever they tell me about them, I feel so angry at my parents. My mom doesn’t even tell me why I can’t have sleepovers or go to one. When I ask her why, she says no, then gets distracted by something, most often her phone, and forgets to tell me. There must be some really important reason for me to not be able to sleep over at a friend’s house. I think that she thinks we won’t sleep at all and be zombies the next morning. Does she know how tired kids get? Plus, people only sleep over on days when there is no school the next day. No parent would agree to that. I would be fine at a sleepover. I could bring everything I need, call her and tell her I’m fine, and actually sleep. Or maybe she thinks it will go crazy because they are a ton of kids there. That’s not true. The only sleepovers I would go to would be with two or three of my close friends. We all know each other and we wouldn’t go crazy. My mom also tells me to ask my dad. I never have asked. I know he will say no, no, no. I want her to just say yes so that I could have a sleepover! It’s funny that I only go to my mom. Maybe I would have better luck asking both of my parents at the same time. I am pretty sure that I am responsible enough to have one. They tell me that they like how responsible I am. If I was as responsible as they tell me, wouldn’t I be able to have sleepovers? I really want to have a sleepover. They sound like so much fun. I wish my parents would let me. I wish there were no rules at all. I woke up bright and early on Thursday morning. It was a Michigan State basketball game day! I threw off my warm comforter and a rush of cold air greeted my arms and bare feet. I thought,”Good thing I have carpet and not freezing wood floor!” I raced over to my closet and looked for some Michigan State clothes to show my spirit. Every shirt, sweatshirt, jersey, pair of pants, and pair of shorts that had Michigan State Green on it was gone! There was a note where my favorite sweatshirt used to be. It told me that Nicole took all of my gear! I thought,”How could she! Oh, I am so mad at her. Wait until I get to school!” This was an awful, terrible day. I bounded down the stairs, and my dad was starting to make my lunch. He saw me wearing a Blackhawks sweatshirt and asked,”Where is your Michigan State sweatshirt! It’s game day!” I responded,” Nicole took it all! The thief!” My dad shrugged and went back to my peanut butter bagel. I grabbed cereal fixings and went to the table. Linnea sat there with a huge ice cream sundae topped with whipped cream, fudge sauce, sprinkles, and candy. I exclaimed, ”What are you eating?!” She looked up with a full mouth covered in sprinkles and replied,”Ithe cweam thundae.” I turned towards my dad and asked,”Seriously? You let her eat an ice cream sundae?” He looked at me quizzically and answered,”Sure. You can have one too.” I was so confused. Usually, my dad didn’t even let me have ice cream for dessert! Now, he’s offering me some for breakfast! Something wrong was going on. If this kept happening, this would be an awful, terrible day. In my classroom, I hung my backpack on my hook and turned around. Only six kids were there! My head snapped around to look at the clock. It was already 9:09! We almost never had more than one or two kids gone each day! Where was everybody? I asked Mr Solarz why no one was here. He looked at me and said,”Why would they? You didn’t have to come either.” I looked at the schedule. We were supposed to be doing We The People. I marched back to my desk and pulled out my textbook, notes spiral, and WTP packet. No one else had theirs out. I went over to Stacy and said,”Come on! Get your We The People stuff out.” She looked up from her phone and said,”No. We don’t have to.” I asked Luke, Alison, Nicole, and Chris the same question. I got the same answer. I went to my desk raised my hand, and questioned,”Mr. Solarz, shouldn’t we be doing We The People right now?” He leaned back on his swivel chair and said,”No. We’re here to hang out. He returned to his baseball draft on the computer. I looked around and saw that everyone was on their phone. I felt something weird in my stomach. Mr. Solarz loves to learn more than anybody. Why aren’t we learning? I needed to study for my test, but I couldn’t. This was definitely going to be an awful, terrible day. At home, I opened my front door and went straight to the dining room table with a snack so I could study for the test. Right then, Linnea came up behind me and snatched my notes. She held it up and ripped it into eight square pieces. I heard her footsteps lead to the bathroom and then the flushing of a toilet. This was definitely an awful, terrible day. I was furious! I flew up the stairs and got the few soggy remnants of my notes. My mom sat on her bed watching CNN on her laptop. I screamed,”MOM! Linnea flushed all of my test notes down the toilet!” She looked up at me and said,”Too bad. If you had studied more, you wouldn’t be so mad.” I felt anger boiling up inside me and just exploded.”How can you say that? This test is so important. I’m going to fail all because of HER!” She said,”Go work it out.” Just then, her IPhone screen lit up and started vibrating. I grabbed it and to my luck, it was Stacy.”Hello?” She invited me to come over with Alison and Nicole. I muted the phone and asked my mom. She said she would drive me over there. I told Stacy I’d be right there and hung up. I raced to the car and waited for my mom. At Stacy’s house, I kicked off my shoes and walked into her dining room. Alison was already there. They were eating mini pepperoni pizzas and drinking tall glasses of ice water. I said,”Hey guys, what’s up?” They replied in unison,”Hey! It’s great that you're here!” Stacy swallowed a bite of pizza and said,”We’re going to make cookies when Nicole comes. But my mom made you a pizza.” Mrs. Dollia gave me a plate with a pizza and some water. I said,”Thanks” and sat down next to Stacy. I inhaled my pizza and right as I gulped down the last sip of water, the doorbell rang. Stacy raced to the door and let Nicole in. She sat down next to Alison and got her pizza. When she finished, the four of us found the Ghirardelli chocolate chip cookie mix and started making the dough. Alison dumped in the dry mix, Stacy poured in the water, Nicole added the oil, and I cracked the eggs. We took turns mixing and then we got out the cookie sheets. Just as we were about to start rolling dough balls, Aidan bolted in the room and grabbed the dough bowl. I saw the dough on the floor and the upturned bowl and I was so mad, but I kept it inside. I waited for Stacy to blow up but instead she asked her mom,”Where’s the other cookie mix?” She dug through the pantry and found it. We continued the same process as before and actually baked the cookies. I ate one warm off the pan, then everyone else did. We sat down on the couch to watch T.V. Suddenly, everything blacked out. I woke up with everything spinning. My vision slowly started to focus and I recognized things in my family room. The T.V. mounted on the wall, the pair of leather chairs, and the stack of books and computers. I saw my mom and asked,”What happened?” She said,”You got hit on the head with a basketball hard at practice. You don’t have a concussion, but you need to rest. I thought to myself,”Thank God it was only a dream. I would never want to live like that.” My mom saw my expression and asked,”Why are you smiling?” I replied,”Nothing.” I was so relieved that this was a dream. If the world actually had no rules and laws like this world in my dream, I would never be able to live an entire life! I couldn’t even make it a day! I knew that rules were essential for us to live a safe and happy life. I would never try to question a simple rule or law. I hoped that I would never have this dream again, because it was awful. A world without rules and laws is not a world for me. |
