Before Reading How does the title help me know what this text is going to be about? I wonder what Henry's Freedom Box means, how can that relate to the Underground Railroad. I also think that Henry is a slave and he is going to try and escape. What do I know about this topic or subject? I know the Underground Railroad is a way for the slaves to escape to freedom. What questions do I have? I wonder what the percentage of time the slaves got caught, how well did it work. What type of nonfiction is this? How does that help me prepare for this read? I think that this Literary Nonfiction or Historical fiction because it seems like it will be a story, and slavery ended a long time ago so it is historical. Is there a particular way that the text is structured? The text looks like it is structured like a story. | During Reading What do I understand? Now I know that slaves weren't allowed to there birthday, slave owners sound like jerks. Slaves are mostly separated from there family, Henry just got passed down to his masters brother. Henry just married another slave and they had three kids, that wasn't common back then because there kids could be sold to another owner. Henry's wife and kids just got sold to another slave, NOOO! Henry is mailing himself to a friend to escape from slavery. Henry "Box" Brown. What is unclear? I wonder how many slaves mailed there selves out to a friend or freedom, and if it was always worked this good. What new questions do I have? I wonder if Henry will ever see his family ever again, it seems like his family is going to be set free or already is. I think that Henry's new master is going to be really mean to him, because the book said that his owner was nice and kind to him. Why can't slaves sing, I think it was disrespectful and rude for a slave to do it (so unfair.) I wonder if Henry's kids will get separated and if he can do anything about it. I wonder what oil triviality is because it burned Henry's hand to the bone. | After Reading What have I learned? What are the important ideas that stuck with me? What new or lingering questions do I have? |

To: Pablo Hey Pablo, So I’m writing you this letter because you requested to learn more about me. I am 34 years old, married to my beautiful wife Mary Shuttleworth, It’s so sad my last wife Miss Montgomery died just last year. Yeah so things aren’t going well with Great Britain, because I am a Baronet and a baronet is 14th down on the royal/noble rankings so I am on Great Britain’s team. But, I’m also supporting the American Independance, so I am considered a traitor to Great Britain. So one artifact that really defines me is a colt symmetry horse, I chose this because I am a breeder and a trainer of race horses. Ole’ Hollandoise and I won the St. Leger a couple months ago, ahhhhh that was awesome everyone chanting and screaming your name. Another artifact that I would like to share with you is A flag that represents all the 13 colonies, I love that idea because I am a patriot and I am fighting for independence against Great Britain. I just think that it isn’t fair that King George is forcing all these dumb taxes and laws on all at once, I sure do hope you think the same Pablo because the colonies are thinking of starting a war against Great Britain. My last artifact but certainly not least is the Parlington Hall, because I was a member of the Thirsk Parliament. I built a commemorative arch to the victory for the War of Independance and now it’s modeled on the Arch of Constantine in Rome at the entrance to my Parlington Hall. Kind Regards Sir Thomas Gascoigne Reflection The maine
