What do I know?

You get concussions when you hit your head hard.

What did I learn?

I learned lots of thing, a couple of them are doctors have not found a cure to concussion. Another thing i learned was that everyone has a different healing period. Also sports are not the main cause of concussions they are acutely the 5th, the first three (in order) are bike accidents,car accidents, and roller coasters. Another thing i learned is that women are more prone to concussions because the men have the stronger necks. one more thing I learned is that there are 1.7 concessions a year.

What do I want to know?

How they affect the brain and what are people doing to prevent and treat them.

What action did I take?

Some action I took was making a website and making a video to spread the word about facts about concussions.

How will I learn the information?

I will learn it by looking at web sights,books, and videos.

What questions do I have?

A few questions I still have are, Why are concussions called concussions, another one is when you get multiple concussions are you more prone to getting more, the last one is is it possible to hit the same part of the brain every time.

My reflection is I learned lots of thing by watching videos,reading facts, and talking to a specialist, I also learned that how to make a website,make a survey, and use QuickTime. My favorite part of this activity was making my website and making a video QuickTime. I think it was cool to learn about concussions because I like to learn what happens when you get a hard hit to the head. I liked getting help from my peers when I didn't know how to do something or what to do. There are a lot of different varieties of salt. They probably all form differently and not the same. Some form in the water and some form somewhere else.

I learned that there are many different varieties of salt and how each are formed. I also learned that each salt doesn't all form the same way and I learned about different types of salts that I got to pick to do research on.

I want to know what are the different varieties of salt and how are each formed. If I get any other questions that I have from the question that I am researching now, I would be happy to find out that information because I would know even more about salt.

My action that I will take will be showing my friends and family about what I learned and how much fun doing this topic was. I will show them my video and my slideshow and the websites that I used to find all my information!

I might look in a book and search on the internet. I also will ask my grandma because she is a chemist and she might help me find some information.

Reflection:
For this passion time project I learned a lot about my topic (salt). It was a lot of fun doing some research and learning about salt. I always wanted to know about all the different varieties of salt. I even got some help from my friends/teammates if I didn't know how to do something. The cool part about doing this topic was that I got to pick what kinds of salt to do research on. I didn't have the teacher telling me what salts to do research on or any other students. Although, I still have a few questions swarming in my brain about this topic. What was most fun was making my website because I got to make it my own. I got to write what I wanted to write and put in the pictures I want to put in. What was difficult was finding my information. Refection: When I was doing my passion time project the difficulties that I had were finding how they were different. I looked at many different websites to try to find them. The easiest part was finding all the different kinds of codes and what they did. What I thought was fun was finding how the different kinds of computer languages were different.

What do we know?

I already know that I have half of my mom's genes and half of my dad's genes. I also know that there are two types of genes, dominant and recessive.

What do we want to know?

I want to know, "How did I get red hair, why am I Irish, why do I have blue eyes, why do I like sports...etc."

How will I learn the information?

To learn my information I will try and get in touch with a expert about genetics. I will look online, and look at family tree websites. I will also ask my family about what genes they have.

I learned a lot of stuff in this unit, like I learned that I had a 50% chance of having red hair, but automatically I would have the red hair gene in me. I also leaned that you get your genes by what genes your parents have, and it all matters how you inherit them.

To find my answer to my topic I researched a ton about, I watched video's of experts talking about genetics. I also set up a meeting with Mr. Solarz to teach me how to draw a Punnet Square.

Some qeustions that I still have are, can two people who aren't twins have the same exact same genes.

Reflection: I love passion time in your class where you let us research about stuff that we really like. Some struggles I had were, it just really came down to the wire for me to finish my website. I also really liked taking the video's of your screen on screencast, and some of the other stuff you taught us how to do on the computers.

What Do I Know?

I know that sports have changed a lot over time because they got safer and the stadiums changed a lot too.

Reflection: I liked learing about different sports and how they evolved, it was hard at first because I didn't really know where to start, at the start too I didn't know what I was going to do. Yellowstone was the first National Park in the US.

There have been many fires and a lot of wildlife live there.
Its on the border of Wyoming, Idaho and Montana.

What did we learn?

Yellowstone has the worlds one of 30 super volcanoes and its the only one on land the others are in the water. I learned In Yellowstone there are 67 land animals, 330 types of birds, 5 amphibians, and 6 reptiles. Old faithful erupts every every 88 minutes but originally erupted every 60 minutes but because of earthquake damage it is now about 88 minutes.

I made a website about it and told people all about Yellowstone with facts. I also made a Trello card about it.

Why are things native in only Yelowstone and not other places like Cutthroat Trout they are only native in Yellowstone? Why was this the first National Park and not some other park?

Reflection: I really enjoyed my topic and seeing stuff about all the animals and the places that most people visited. Most of the facts that I thought about were really amazing and half the stuff I learned I didn't know even though I have been there before. I would like to tell people that Yellowstone if not dangerous because I know that some people are afraid of Yellowstone because it has the worlds only land super Volcano and some people are silly. Germany was left to rebuild nation. This rebuilding process took a long time to get things back to normal. Germans immigrated to the U.S after the war. about 1,161,000 people immigrated to U.S from 1949-1960's . So the German population went down. A lot of East Germany was given to Poland, so territory has changed in Germany.Transportation networks were severely damaged. It was more difficult to get around Japan, but now transportation is fine now. Okinawa was returned to Japan in 1972. When Japan lost it back in 1894. 5/7 of Tokyo's population left the ruined city after the War. Imagine if nobody left Tokyo, Tokyo would have around 20 million people!It took 30 years for Soviet Union to return population back to pre - warn numbers. A quarter of the country's captital resources had been destroyed. 12,400,000 civilians were killed during the war. a lot of USSR 's population was warn down from the war. This meant it's population was warn down. WW2 affects Soviet Union's population. Unbelievable. Although many deaths occurred, Soviet Union became a leading world power.22% of Poland's population was killed. 90% of the deaths were civilians. Poland remained under Soviet Union control. Poland territory was changed immediately after the war. Poland now has more land land than before WW2
80% of China's deaths were by civilians. Imagine what China would be like today without any civilian deaths in WW2 ! China created The Peoples Republic of China. China helped North Korea in the Korean war. If the Peoples Republic of China wasn't made, they wouldn't be allies in the Korean War.

The very first thing I did was watch a Youtube video about countries after WW2. I got a whole page of notes from the video! Then I looked at a top 10 site of the most affected countries by World War 2. I did 4 of the countries from the top 10 that I think almost everybody should know. I also did one more that not that many people would know about and it was number one on the top 10 list. ( Soviet Union.) After I found facts I made a website and put all my facts down that I found. I also did a page on people affected by World War 2.

I wonder if they are going to have a World War 3? I also still want to know if some countries military aren't aloud to go into different countries that were rivals in the war in their free - time? Why was Soviet Union such a leading World power at the end of World War 2 when they had the most deaths out of any country in World War 2.

Reflection: This project was really fun. I still can't believe that so many people died in this war. During this passion time project, I learned a ton more about World War 2 and technologies. It was really fun using Quick Time. Some of the struggles in this round were that I really didn't have that much time. I just feel like my website could be so much better if I had more time. The easiest part about this round was making my website. It was just so fun making my website. I think when you're having fun it makes what you're doing easy.

Reflection: I had so much fun on this project! I got to read all different types of folktales and wildlife around Devils Tower! What do I know?

Why is there still homelessness when we have possible solutions? By: Charlotte

What do we Know?

I know that there is only PADS during when it it cold out. I also know that homeless people in the big cities beg for money, and a lot of times people ignore them. I try to give them change as often as I can. I know that in summer they sleep on the streets. I have seen them lined up sleeping against a building later at night when I went to New York. I also two years ago went to a church in Chicago on Christmas day to help serve food to those who were homeless, and to be truthful it was really fun so I would love to do it again.

What do we Want to Know?

I want to know why not tons of people go out of there way to help them and make sure they have enough money to get a simple meal at night for dinner? Why does nobody care? Why doesn't many people try and help them? I am sure that anyone can spare 1 penny.

How will I Learn the Information?

To learn information I will research and find information on different websites on how kids can help with this cause. I might see at my church if I can donate any food to food pantries to help give to homeless people.

I learned that there are too many ways to help a homeless person to NOT help them and pass them by. These are civilized people we are talking about! Just because they don't have an address and look a little different doesn't mean you should glare or laugh at them, they are probably going through a very tough time. It doesn't help to laugh at them.

The action that I took is that I made a website to make people aware of what others might be going through. My website showed that to help everyone is hard but we should at least try. Think about it, would you like to be ignored and laughed at every day? As you are sitting on the ground begging for a teeny bit of change to get you a simple and cheap meal from McDonald's? Life would be very hard, as we have it easy.

Some questions that I still have are why can't homeless people get back on their feet when they fall down? Do you think that they have a voice in their head saying that there is hope? Or does it say that they will never sleep in a bed for the rest of their lives? Are they always afraid? Are they brave to sleep on the streets at night or do they have no choice? Are they always afraid?

Reflection:
The most fun part of this passion time project was making the video of my website. It was my favorite part because it was like I could say anything that I didn't tell on my website and I put it in my video. I could say things that I meant to say on my website but forgot so then I still got the chance to put these ideas on my website. The most difficult part was researching about what the cause was of homelessness. It especially didn't just tell me what the cause was so I has to use background information and a bit of what I researched. It came out to be that there were a ton of different things that caused this tragedy. For example, you possibly weren't paying the rent and you got kicked out of your house. Or you didn't have enough money to pay for where you lived. Some advice I would give to a person that wanted to do a project like this would be is visit as many websites as you can, they honestly give you a lot of information. They also give you a ton of ideas for your personal life like when you go downtown Chicago and see a homeless person and what you should do for them. Overall this was a super fun project considering I was helping a homeless person in some way, and it made me feel like I was doing something super good for this world.

Reflection:
I learned that there are so many more ways to help feed starving kids around the world. I also learned that you can feed the kids for free on some sites. I liked all of my project but the most fun part was probably getting to make my website because research was kind of slow but the website was fun because it is a good way to reach people all over and it can really be your own and still present all of your information in a very nice looking way. Overall the project was really fun. I just love the website because of the large amount of people that have access to it and can view it
and hopefully help.
The hardest part was actually coming up with this question. In the beginning I struggled to find a question and switched my question also. Once I found my question it was smooth sailing. I think that the easiest part would have had to been gathering my information because all I had to do was find a site and then check and make sure it was safe and it wasn't a scam. I really didn't find to many websites that didn't look reliable only a few that I wasn't sure about and I'd rather be safe than sorry.
If I could do anything different I would have not found as many websites that you can donate on and looked more for good websites that you can sign up to volunteer on, play on, ect. Some advice for anyone else doing this project is that you should again look for a balance of different websites give people options instead of here are ways to donate the end. Provide a wide variety of websites for people to see.

Reflection:
One thing I didn't like was all of the work to interview people about the the Chicago to Mackinac Island race because most people don't have time. Also there isn't a lot of people that do race so that was a down number two. A good thing was that I liked my topic a lot and I don't know what I could ever do next time for a question! I liked this topic because it was interesting to me and you can learn so many things, and there is so many thing I don't know. I also like this topic because my passion are boats, sail boats, RC vehicles, go karts, and sailing is one of them. I have taken 3 weeks of sailing classes before.

I really liked this passion time project and I think that I did okay for my first passion time project. I really wish that I made my page longer and that my video was better but it still was good. I think that I took a while to do this project and I think that I could have sped it up a little but it was still good. I still have many questions but I think the best one would be, why don't all of the animals change color in the world? I ask about this because it is weird how only some animals change color and most do not. Why do some animals change for ever and some not?

Reflection: There was many things that were very difficult. Such as, when I started researching it took me a while to find things about my topic but when I found out that you had to type in a certain thing to find out about more topic. Another thing that was difficult was I had to make a page for each animal and sometimes things deleted or the pictures were gone and that was frustrating and confusing to me because I wanted to finish that day but I had to go back and do it all over again. There was many things that were fun though like when I got to finally make my video it gave me such a rush I was talking for a long time. I also had fun making my website and finding the pictures for each animal because it was exciting knowing that I made a website that is on the internet. I learned a whole lot so if I said everything this page would be really long but I learned that the sewer system was like a cycle.

I found a graph and copied it and researched all of it and made a website.

What questions do we still have?

Do other states have a different system than I looked up. Also, how much water on a daily bases goes through the system.

Reflection:

I really liked this project, I liked my topic and I was really enjoying the whole thing. I love the Trello and we kind of got to do whatever we want. The KWLAQ was a good idea and I did my screen recording and I really liked it. My website is finalized and that was cool because he didn't really didn't give us any directions about how to do it, he helped if we had problems though. It was hard because it wasn't easy to find websites about pipes and sewage because it is not common to bring up normally. But once I started to get it, I was an expert at it.

What do I Know?

That Humans are smarter than all.
Smarter animals survive.

What do I Want to Know?

My Question above; and how fish and human brains differ. If there are more scientific words to summarize things I might want to say.

How will I Learn the Information?

The Internet, books and other resources.

What did I Learn?

I learned that most fish have particularly small brains for their body size. Also that, what an animal eats effects how smart it is. The female brain is usually biggest between the ages of 16-18 and a males is usually between the ages of 19-21. So that was interesting.

What Action did I Take?

I searched key words and looked at Wikipedia pages and images I found online. I made a website.

What Questions do I still have?

How many chimpanzees currently know sign language?
If fish could compete in a race/course?
What fish are the smartest?
If the Brain grows with your body significantly or just a bit.

Reflection:

This project is was very cool because I learned more about lots of different things such as fish brains, chimpanzees, I learned that there is a word for an estimation of an animal's intelligence based on it's brain size. Words mean a lot of different things! I also learned that chimpanzees think ahead more than I thought. I was really interested when I read that some experts said that some studies showed that having a bigger brain might make you smarter. Overall it was a really cool thing to learn about; and I enjoyed it a lot. I am happy I had a good amount of time to do this.

How Will I Learn the Information?

I know from my own experiences that the human brain can so easily be fooled by simple things.

I want to know what parts of the brain control fear response and how you can be tricked by fear.

I will look up info and use my own experiences to prove and confirm new information.

I learned that there are 4 essential parts involved in fear response and that they all control something different.

I will teach people about fear response and hope that that might help with their own experiences or anxiety.

I still am wondering how some other, more complicated parts of the body are fooled by fear or fear response.

Reflection:
I am hoping my project may help people (if they visit my site) with their own anxiety experiences. I know that everyone has at least just a minor thing with some kind of anxiety, and I know I have. If it doesn't help people, I hope it teaches them at least something about fear response. I learned a lot about anxiety and fear response tricking the brain. I think my own research and website has helped me substantially with anxiety management, because I know how it all works now, and why it works that way. I found it enjoyable, researching and answering questions I have been wondering about for a while, and being able to do my own thing.

What do we know?

I know that slavery ended after the Civil War. I know almost everything about slaves and slavery. The Civil War was an American war. It was The North vs The South of the U.S.A. Abraham Lincoln was president at the time and he wanted to abolish slavery. The northern states supported him, but the southern states disagreed. The underground railroad was a series of routes that took slaves in plantations to the northern states. It's a very dangerous route to freedom because not only it's illegal and if you get caught the punishment would be terrible if you get caught, it's the easiest way to freedom. The underground railroad included running through forests, secret passageways, valleys, and unoccupied areas.

What do we want to know?

I want to learn more about the
Civil War. I want to know about specific battles, where they were fought, how many people fought them, and how were they fought. I want to know more details about the war, like who enforced it, who were the generals of the armies, and what there uniforms looked like. I also want to know what were the common jobs for people who weren't slaves and what they wore. I want to know about specific routes and paths used in the underground railroad.

How will I learn the information?

I will try to search my specific questions on the web and find many resources for information.

What did we learn?

I learned more about the Union and Confederate armies, like who led them. Many people were generals of the Union army, but not at the same time. The actual leader and commander of the army was Ulysses S. Grant. He made the laws and restrictions for the army as well as recruiting and dividing it. The generals positioned and commanded them on the battlefield. Robert E. Lee was the general, leader, and commander for the Confederate army. I now have an idea of the Confederate's point of view on the Civil War. They were against ending slavery because they needed slaves to run factories and harvest crops. Most plantations were and still are in the South. They didn't have enough people to do those jobs, so they had slaves. They didn't pay them because they didn't have the money. I also found out that the Union army wasn't winning the whole time in the Battle of Gettysburg, but clawed there way to victory when they were beaten by the Confederate army two of the three days.

What action did we take?

I think people should learn about American history because you should know about your own country. I also believe that kids in other countries should learn about their own country. By posting this blog post, people can see the story I wrote and learn about the Civil War. If they want, I could read the book out loud and have a discussion about what we learned.

What questions do we still have?

I still have a few lingering questions, like who agreed that Robert E. Lee should surrender to the Union. I'm also wondering what would have happened if the Confederate party won the war.

Reflection

This project was harder than I thought it would be. I struggled finding information that was easy for me to understand. Also, there isn't much information or primary sources since the Civil War happened so long ago. Writing my story was hard because I have never taken information and twisted it into some sort of plot and story. Although the difficulties, it was very fun. Just like reading, writing zones me out of the real world and sucks me into a world about my characters and what I write. Every second in that world is determined by me because I write the story. I think that people need to learn how to write well not only to experience the joy of it, but also because in the future, no matter what job you have, you will have to write papers all the time. Even if its e-mailing your boss, it still takes writing skills. People should learn about the Civil War because if you live in the USA, you need to learn about her past. The Civil War was one of the most important wars in USA history because it decided if we would be two separate countries, the Union and the Confederacy. It also determined if slavery would be legal in the USA or not. I think next passion time, I will choose a topic that I will have lots of information on to not repeat round 1's struggles for me.

How Can I Design and Build a Car? By Ben

What do I know?

I Know that there is a lot of stuff to do to design a car and it can be very hard some times. Also it will have a lot of different parts into building a car.

What did I learn?

I learned that to design a car takes quite a bit of time. I also learned where to put holes in the car for aerodynamics.

What do I want to Know?

I want to know if I can design one myself and maybe have it move! I also want to know if I can change the aerodynamics.

What action did I take?

The actions I took were looking at some cars that i knew that could go very fast and had a lot of down force from aerodynamics.

How will I learn the Information?

Researching Cars, looking at body's of cars, and designing one on a computer. This will help me because then I can see the amount of down force produced.

What questions do I still have?

Some questions that I still have are what are all of the parts inside the car and engine?

Reflection: I think this was a very fun project because unlike other passion time projects I got to take apart a car and rebuild it in my own way. Another reason this passion time was very fun is because I used a design software that I can't usually use! 1.What was the most fun, The most fun thing was making the car because I got to do a hands on projects and do something that I love. I also liked designing the car because again I got to do what ever I wanted with it. 2. What was most difficult was building the car because I had to cut it and re assemble the car. 3.What was easy was designing the car online because I got to do it on something that I know how to use. So that was my passion time project and I really liked it.

K I know that animals are hunted and killed also captured by hunters.

In this protect I learned a lot about how poor animal are abducted from there family. Sent to different zoos across the world tortured and killed for there skin or fur or blubber. Some hunters lure things out of preserves to kill them and some people abandon them in cages on abandon islands (like discovery island). Most people could care less about the ecosystem but I do If this is not your kinda presentation no hard feelings Ryan B.
