Nice clip to show students & to remind them not to say things like, "It's easy for her because she's so smart." or "You are so lucky - nothing like that ever happens to me!"

Our classroom is a place where our brains get to have some fun. We don't just study facts and take tests - we constantly improve ourselves and work together kindly!

Reflection/Synthesis:
  1. Why do you think Brian's brain jumped out of his head? What evidence do you have from the video to support that?
  2. What do you think the books being shoved into Brian's head represented? Why do you think that?
  3. Brian completed most of his test "brainlessly." Why do you think the animator did that?
  4. Brian's brain ended up having a lot of fun & got to be creative. What do you think that represented?
  5. The question, "What is the meaning of life?" caused Brian's "book brain" to go wacky. Why?
  6. The brain noticed this and hurried back to remove the books and take over. Real thinking took place and Brian's brain drew a picture representing what "the meaning of life" is to him. What did that picture represent?

Envy / Jealousy - It's not a bad emotion to have. It's just important that we deal with it in appropriate ways!

Reflection/Synthesis:
  1. Why is envy sometimes considered to be a "bad thing"?
  2. What do we now know about envy that also makes it a "good thing"?
  3. What have you been envious of before? How did you handle this emotion? Any embarrassing stories?
  4. Next time you're feeling envy, jealousy, or wanten, how will you try to act? What are appropriate ways to act?

To become an expert at any skill takes practice

Reflection/Synthesis:
  1. Do you think this man knew every step in this process when he first started?
  2. Do you think he had to learn it either through trial and error (guess & check) or from a mentor?
  3. Do you think the finished products that he made when he was first beginning were as good as they are today?
  4. There were LOTS of steps involved in this process. We don't know why each step was necessary, but we can guess. What purpose do you think each step played in the final product? What might happen if one of the steps were to be skipped?
  5. If you thought that Kintsugi was THE MOST AMAZING THING, do you think you could become great at it with training, practice, effort, and time? How about if you weren't that interested in it?
  6. How important is passion, curiosity and drive in learning a new skill or becoming stronger at an existing one?

Learning new SKILLS can be tough sometimes, especially during challenging circumstances. But if you slow down and walk yourself through each step with the help of a strong mentor (or YouTube video), you might be able to improve over time!

Inferencing:
  1. Why is Dad the one who has to try to help the little girl with her hair?
  2. What happened to Mom? How do you know?
  3. This one is HARD: Do we know what happens to Mom after the video is over? What evidence can you find?
Reflection/Synthesis:
  1. Have you ever learned a new skill by watching a How-To video on YouTube? What did you learn to do?
  2. How is learning a new skill in school similar to learning a new skill through a video?
  3. How is it different?
