A Day Without Laws By: Charlie Coon I had just finished eating dinner. It was meatloaf and peas. I don’t really like the peas because they aren’t fresh, they are frozen. I really like the meatloaf because it is great with ketchup. Peter and George were still eating. Man, they took a long time to eat. At school Ethan Kossak said that he would see if we could watch a movie at his house tonight. He told me that we would have popcorn and ice cream. I had a bunch of homework though so I didn’t think that I could go. But it turned out that at CAP I had completed all of my homework! I was sure that I could go. Just then, I heard the phone ringing in the living room. I could hear the dee-dee, dee-dee of the phone urging me to pick it up. It was like the phone was trying to hypnotize me to pick it up. I saw the name Kossak on the tiny viewing screen. I wish that they could make the viewing screen larger. I picked up the phone and Ethan said, “Hey Charlie, I was wondering if you could come over tonight to watch a movie,” I went to my mom and asked her if I could go. She said, “No, your room is a mess and it is a school night,” my mom replied to me. I went back on the phone. “Can you come?” Ethan said. “My mom said no,” I then said. “Oh,” in a very disapointed voice and then Ethan hung up. I could feel my head throbbing with anger. I couldn’t believe that she wouldn’t let me go! I felt like I was the worst friend in the world. I almost wanted to shout out in fury and anger and show my mom how I felt. I stormed into my room like an angry giant and slammed the door. I could almost hear the door cracking in half. I remembered how it used to be when I was younger, it didn’t matter if my room was clean or not. Then I heard Peter ask if he could go to a friend’s house, and my mom said yes. “YES, YES, YES, I can go over to Alex’s house to watch a movie!” he started screaming. “Stop rubbing it in Peter! I want to watch a movie at my friend’s house but I can’t,” I almost said that but I held my mouth shut tight. All of a sudden I was so confused. Peter is so young! He is in first grade and I am in fifth grade and I don’t get to watch a movie at my friend’s house but Peter gets to? He needs way more sleep than me and yet he is allowed to stay up late and watch a movie? This is so unfair! I went over to my bed, turned on the light and started reading Space Case. I was in the part where Dr. Holtz dies on the moon surface from him putting his space suit on wrong. I read for about one more hour and then went to sleep. All I could think about was wishing that there were no rules or laws. The next morning I woke up at 6:30 AM. I got out of bed and went down the hall to the bathroom to brush my teeth. I was in the middle of brushing my teeth when I saw Peter bounding down the hall. “Why are you acting so happy Peter? Did you just hear something funny?” I asked. It must have sounded to him like I was an alien speaking underwater do to my toothbrush and toothpaste in my mouth. “No, I didn’t hear something funny. I did something funny!” He said almost bouncing up and down with excitement. “What did you do Peter?” I asked in the most stern voice I could muster. Though it did sound kind of scared. He then gleefully replied with, “I used your toothpaste to clean out the sink, and it was really gross!” He sprinted into his room and slammed the door. I could hear him cracking up like a lunatic. It took my brain a couple seconds to process what he said. It finally settled in and I spit the toothpaste out like a nerf super soaker water gun. I then filled my cup with water and rinsed my mouth with water like a gazillion times. “Who would use someone’s toothbrush to clean out the sink! I can’t belive that someone would be crazy enough to do that!” I said in total outrage. “I would!” I could hear the muffled response but in total glee. It was my brother Peter. He then burst into the most gleeful giggles that I had ever heard. “This is going to be the worst day of my life,” I thought in my head. Then, about an hour later, we were driving to CAP, the before and after school program hosted in the Westgate commons. The letters CAP stand for children at play, but most kids who go there call it children at prison. On the way to CAP we saw lots of people driving on the wrong side of the road. I realized something strange There were no police! Just then a motorcycle went right beside us and then disappeared. “Whoa did you see that motorcycle Peter!? It was going like 90 miles per hour!” I said to Peter. I turned to dad in total confusion. “Why didn’t that person on that motorcycle not get pulled over by the police?” I asked my dad. “What is the police? What do they do?” he asked me. “The police are the guys who enforce the laws and they drive around in blue cars with flashing red and blue lights,” I replied. “Oh, that sounds very weird. By the way what movie did you watch last night with Ethan?” he asked me. “Don’t you remember that Mom said I couldn’t go?” I asked him. Just then a police car came over a hill in the road and it was going about 50 miles per hour without their lights flashing! Also it was on the wrong side of the road. “So much for the police,” I mumbled. Then a car went right in front of us. It then crashed into another car. An ambulance went right by the crash and didn’t stop! Then I saw where a speed limit sign had been, but it got torn down! Then we came to where it used to be a four way stop but all the stop signs had been torn down! “What happened to those stop signs?” I asked my dad. “There were never stop signs there. You must have had a very weird dream last night, Charlie.” He told me. We then arrived at CAP about two minutes later. The drive had only been about five minutes, but it felt like I had lived my entire life in a world of chaos. This is going to be the worst day of my life, I thought in my head. Later that day in We The People, we learned about the slave trade and what the framers did about the slave trade. We were learning about the three fifths clause. It was a compromise between the northern states and the southern states that said that three fifths of a state’s slave population could go towards representatives in the house of representatives. “That doesn’t seem very fair for the northern states because the southern states had a lot more slaves than the northern states.” I mumbled under my breath. Kendall was sitting next to me. She must have heard me say that because all of a sudden she closed her book and stood up. She then picked up her book and started pounding me on the head with it. It felt like it was a brick being pounded on my head by a giant. I was sure that after this I would have a huge lump on my head about the size of an egg. I looked around the room and everyone was looking at us and I heard a chant go up around us. “Fight, fight, fight, fight, fight!” I could hear the noise all around me like invisible speakers had suddenly been switched on by some invisible force. The words were throbbing in my body like thunder. I was starting to get a terrible headache. It felt like my forehead was on fire. My forehead was throbbing with the pain of the headache like a heartbeat. “Why are you doing this, Kendall? What did I do?” I asked her. “Because I don’t like what you said.” She told me. She then sat down and opened her book to the page and started reading along again. “Good job Kendall!” The whole class yelled. I was so confused, how are they cheering for Kendall when she beat me up? That is so unfair! How can Kendall get away with this? “This is going to be the worst day of my life.” I mumbled under my breath. Later that day at lunch, I was sitting eating my lunch of chicken nuggets, carrots, apples, and milk. Then I felt something very gooey and slimy hit the back of my head. I put my hand behind my head and wiped the gooey thing off. It was a scoop of mashed potato! Thankfully the mashed potato didn’t have any gravy on it and it was a clump about the size of my hand. Then something very hard hit my head with a loud thump! I looked down and saw an apple resting at my feet. It was a perfectly red apple and there was a huge bite out of it. I could see that the bite was not one bite but It was one bite and then another bite going deeper into the apple. I made the mistake of standing up because everyone was trying to get a clear shot at me. As soon as I stood up I got hit all over my body. There was almost any kind of food that I could possibly imagine. Everything from apples to cake was thrown at the same time. They all zoomed in on me like heat seeking missiles. I just had enough time to yell out “NOOOO!” But it didn’t matter because everything hit me at the same time. If it was only one side that had hit me I would have been thrown onto the ground by the force of the food. But I was finally lucky because the food came from all directions. That way I wasn’t thrown to the ground, but I sure did get a lot of food whipped at me. I got an incredibly risky idea. What if I could get to safety by sprinting across the lunchroom to the bathroom? Is it worth it? Well I already have lots of food on me, why not take the risk? I ran like an olympic sprinter through the lunch room and into the bathroom. The food had barely hit me because I had ran super fast to the bathroom and no one could aim at me before I was out of range. If someone was smart they would aim at where I will be not where I am. But I was lucky because no one noticed that they should aim at where I would be. I ran over to the sink to wash off. The sink was working. Finally something had gone right for me! I wanted to stay in the bathroom to be safe but I had to go out to recess and risk getting hit by more food. “This is the worst day of my life.” I mumbled. Later that day in math class, We were grading homework from the night before. We had six pages to grade and we were barely through the first one. “This is going to take a super long time to grade all of these.” I mumbled. Next to me was Cole Martin and he started to tap me with his pencil. Every hit he got more confident so he hit harder. Why are you hitting me with your pencil?” I asked Cole. “Because you said something that is not true.” Cole replied. “Could you stop?” I asked him. “No” He told me. “Mr. Lamic, Cole is hitting me with his pencil. Could you tell him to stop?” I asked Mr. Lamic. He just continued on telling the answers to the class for page two. I wasn’t sure if he had heard me because he just kept on telling the answers to the class. I think that he just ignored it because when I was talking he looked at me. Cole finally settled down and let me get through the grading. Then we did a quick lesson and got into homework. He gave us seven sheets! That is a crazy amount of homework. “This is so much homework that I think that it will drive me insane!” I said. Immediately everyone turned at me with their eyes burning with anger. The way that they were looking at me told me that they wanted to attack me. “Opsys.” I said and then I ducked right as a chair sailed over my head. Then I saw a math book being thrown right at my nose. My reflexes were not quick enough and I got a gushing bloody nose. It was like a mini waterfall that was pouring blood instead of water. Everyone gasped and backed away from me. “Lets get back to homework class.” Mr. Lamic said. His voice sounded very calm like nothing had happened. “This is the worst day of my life.” I said under my breath. Later that day at dinner, We were having chicken nuggets with ketchup and green beans. I had about five chicken nuggets on my plate and they were all at least the size of my pointer finger. The ketchup on my plate looked a little bit different but I thought that it was a little bit thicker. I dipped my chicken nugget in some ketchup and took a bite. That was my first mistake. I hadn’t realized that it was ketchup mixed with hot sauce. The pain was searing the back of my throat like greek fire, but that wasn’t bothering me. It was George highfiving Peter and both of them laughing that made me angry. It was a prank that they had pulled on me! How could I be so stupid? I had seen George smiling at the beginning of dinner but I hadn’t realized that he had been laughing at me! “Not funny George!” I yelled at him. I had hoped that that would make him feel sorry but of course with my luck today it had just made him angry. George dove across the table at me. He started to claw at my face and eyes. His fingernails were very sharp so it felt like he was using knives instead of finger nails. George is only four but he can sure scratch hard. I have seen videos of people getting attacked by squirrels and George was like a squirrel scratching at my face. Peter, Mom, and Dad were still eating. “Help!” I yelled. Dad looked up and then shrugged and went back to eating. Then finally George seemed to be satisfied with what he did to me because suddenly he scampered back across the table and started eating again. Then we had some dessert. It was a chocolate chip cookie and a little bit of ice cream. I finished eating and went to brush my teeth. I then got into pajamas and went to sleep. All I could think about was wishing that there were rules and laws. I had always thought that rules and laws were pointless but now when I have seen what it is like without rules and laws I realized that rules and laws were important. I had barely succeeded in getting through on day, let alone my whole life. My notes on the video: Bone dry surface rockets have reached there people have not gravity is less than half of what it is on earth a year is twice as long they run tests on samples from mars to see if there was life NASA scientists are making a chamber where you can grow plants in space different colors of light can affect plant growth to comunicate you would have to send video clips back and forth. They take about 20 minutes to arrive
Sneeze is a brilliant kid who is an inventor. He has made an invention called the nice alarm. What it does is it wakes you up nicely in the morning by tapping you. When he brings it to school to show his friends he accidentally hurts his best friend Hiccup. Then he figures out how it was broken. He then tests it out again and it works. He is going to summer school so he might get a friend at the hardware store to help him. He gets a job at a run down miniature golf course called Gadabout Golf. He starts to write the book 101 ways to bug your parents. He gets mad at Hiccup and Hiccup leaves him. Then he starts selling his book until he finds out that it is illegal. In his book he puts in coupons to Gadabout Golf.
I think that I am kind of like Sneeze because I like to make stuff and invent things. At the end they could say if Sneeze ever got the money back that he gave to Regan. They could also say how he makes the book better if he did. In the start they could also say why he was sent to summer school. Also it should say why Goldie's mother got appointed to principle.
I was almost to the peak of this miserable mountain. I could see the huge peak looming over me, like I was a tiny ant climbing Mount Everest. I heard my rope straining under the pressure, ready to snap.
I saw a ledge about 3 by 3 feet just above my head, perfect place for lunch! I had just unwrapped my delicious peanut butter jelly sandwich. I heard a fierce growling sound behind me. It was a grey hyena! I was to tired from the climb to defend my sandwich. It gobbled up my sandwich and said “Good sandwich!” “No!”
I did the sitting down, the standing, the walking, the jogging, and the hopping. I learned that the more you exersise the higher heart rate you get. It was fun to do the activities and do the writing down. When my heart rate got higher it was harder to count it.
Reflection Paragraph: It was really fun to do this activity. It was really fun to measure my heart rate. It was also fun to see which exercise exerted me the most.
