Second Continental Congress of 1776 - Tommy D

My Notes

  • Some said the Tea Act affected them the most
  • They know who the Sons of Liberty are
  • Samuel Adams leader of Sons of Liberty
  • Boycotting and Smuggling shops
  • The colonists wanted to be separated because they didn’t get to be in the British Parliament
  • Sons of Liberty Tar/Feathered tax collectors
  • They rebelled
  • Loyalists still delegate from state
  • They met in Pennsylvania for 1st Continental Congress
  • They called the British soldiers Lobsters and other mean name
  • Some people felt very powerful to be separated from England
  • The Second Continental Congress accomplished not having to go to war and declared independence
  • They hated the soldiers and threw snowballs, rocks, and oyster shells
  • They chose Thomas Jefferson to write the Declaration of Independance because he was really smart and knew 7 languages
  • The loyalists were invited to the Congresses so they could have say in what was gonna happen
  • Everyone was upset about the Boston Massacre
I learned about what was happening during the time that the British Parliament was taxing the colonies. Some of the most important things were people like Samuel Adams was the leader of the Sons of Liberty. One of the things I wanted to know that I found out was why Thomas Jefferson was the chosen one to write the Declaration of Independence. It turns out, he was one of the smartest people back then, he knew 7 languages!
Now I think thats cool, I don't even know languages like Spanish that is supposedly "easy". I was surprised to hear that Loyalists were invited to the 1st Continental Congress  and the 2nd Continental Congress just so that they could say in what happened, because if all the Patriots wanted independence then, why would they invite a Loyalist? Or multiple, they would probably just try to throw things in that the British could take advantage of later on. I did know that people were  boycotting things, but I didn't know they were smuggling, but if I think further about it, it was a lot harder to get caught stealing back then with no security cameras or high-tech things we have today.

Instructions:

  1. What shape (or pattern) did the sun appear to make in the sky over the course of the day? What evidence do you have to support your explanation?
  2. How did the height of the sun change during the day? What evidence do you have to support your explanation?
  3. Why was it important to use the same landmark(s) for each observation and have a permanent spot to record our observations from?
  4. When you look at your data from the day, how did the sun’s position seem to change over time?
  5. If you did the same activity next week, do you think you would see the same pattern of movement of the sun? Why or why not?
  6. What about next month?
  7. What about 6 months from now?
  8. Based on your observations, where do you think the sun goes every evening?

Observing Shadow Patterns

How can the Sun tell you the Season?

1. Picture 1
2. Picture 2
3. Picture 3
4. Picture 4
5. Picture 5
  1. Since its 7:30 and the boy is riding his bike in the daytime, and he's wearing shorts and a short-sleeve shirt, I think it's summer.
  2. I think it's autumn because there are pumpkins and the sun is rising at 7:15 A.M. and its still kind of dark and foggy.
  3. I think it's winter because there is snow, the sun is very low at 4:30 P.M. and nobody is outside for 2 reasons: 1) It might too cold 2) It might be getting to dark, and, the leaves are gone and not on the trees anymore.
  4. I think it is spring because the snow is melting and there are flowers growing, and the sun is out and it's out at 7:01 plus, the grass is green and has started to grow, also, the water is unfrozen now, this is in a swamp.
  5. It looks cloudy outside, and other places in the photo don't really have a shadow, there's snow in the background, so it must be winter.

Earth's Gravitational Force -Tommy D.

I made a video which is shown below.

Questions

  1. Which of the following best describes Earth’s shape?
    A. disk
    B. circle
    C. sphere
    D. plane
  2. Earth’s gravity pulls an object toward its ____________________.
  3. Which model do you find most useful to explain gravity and its effects? Why?
    - Tennis ball and rubber band?
    - Styrofoam ball and toothpicks?
    - Circle on paper with arrows?
  4. Why are models helpful at explaining complex scientific concepts like gravity?
  5. Do you think the moon is affected by Earth’s gravity? If so, why doesn’t it fall “down” toward the Earth?
  6. Why doesn’t a plane or bird fall from the sky?
  7. Does gravity ever stop working? Do any forces ever cancel out gravity or reverse it? Explain.
  8. Why is this lesson on gravity a good time to teach about craters?
  1. The Earth is a sphere. Not a circle, because if it was a circle then Earth would be completely flat.
  2. Earth's gravity pulls to its core. The core is the middle of Earth.
  3. I think the tennis ball and rubber band are best for a model because if you are the rubber band you'll get pulled down if you jump up.
  4. I think that models help because you can visually see what's happening infront of you. That always helps me.
  5. The moon is in the gravitational force of Earth. It doesn't go to the core, it orbits around Earth.
  6. Planes and birds don't fall because their wings can create lift allowing them to fly. Also for birds they are light and flap their wings to keep them flying.
  7. There is so way for gravity to stop working, except when you are out of Earth's gravitational force, otherwise, we'd be flying all over. It can't be canceled out either.
  8. I think it's a good time to teach about craters because craters are made from astroids and whatever hitting the surface leaving a large dent. The thing that pulls them in is gravity, gravity can also make the impact more powerful.
