Kinderpals reflection

Reflect on the 7-8 times we worked with our KinderPals this year.
  1. What is the KinderPals Program?
  2. In what ways do you think the program benefits the kindergartners? Try to explain several with support.
  3. Why is the KinderPals program beneficial to 5th graders? Believe it or not, you should be getting something out of the program as well!
  4. What challenges did you experience in KinderPals this year?
  5. What improvements could be made to the program for next year?
  6. Do you think the kindergartners enjoyed the stories from Peekapak? Why do you think that? Do you have any evidence to support your answer?


  1.  The KinderPals program is a program where fifth graders have a kindergarten buddy that they teach to do things like  Honesty and Kindness.
  2. One reason I think this benefits the kindergarteners is because they learn how to be a good person. The reason I think this is because I know that learning things like kindness and honesty make you a better person, and things like that are what we teach them.
  3.  I think KinderPals helped us too because we are also learning the things that we are teaching them.
  4.  One challenge I had was getting my kindergarteners attention. They get easily distracted which makes it hard for us to get them to pay attention.
  5. I think that they should look at what kindergarteners pay attention to and make the program themed for whatever kindergarteners pay attention to. 
  6.  I think they liked them okay but not a lot. The reason I say this is because there faces didn't look very interested in it.

  • Plant seeds in different kinds of soil (e.g. potting soil, perlite, sand, etc.)

Dependent Variables ​

  • Measure the height of each plant at certain checkpoints.

​Evidence

  • We can record our data using measurements (in cm).

  1. Where do animals get their energy?
  2. Do plants need energy too?
  3. Where do you think plants get their energy?
  4. Where do animals get the matter that they can add to their bodies as they grow?
  5. Where do you think plants get the matter that enables them to grow?

  1.  Animals get there energy from the energy stored in the plant or animal that they ate.
  2.  Yes they do.
  3. Plants get there energy from the sun.
  4.  From the matter that whatever animal or plant they ate had.
  5.  They get from carbon dioxide during photosynthesis.


  1. Plants need energy and matter to grow. Where do plants get their ENERGY?
  2. Where do plants get their MATTER?
  3. Where do plants get their FOOD (be careful - this is a trick question)?
  4. Why are plants called Producers?
  5. What would happen if plants didn't have a way to get energy?
  6. What would happen to animals if there were no plants to eat?
  7. What are some of the LIVING components of a plant "system"? (A plant "system" is everything that a plant needs to survive and everything it produces.)
  8. What are some of the NON-LIVING components of a plant "system"?
  9. In what ways do the components of the system interact?
  10. What matter is transported in and out of the plant system?

  1. Plants get there energy from the sun.
  2. Plants get there matter from carbon dioxide.
  3. They turn some of the energy from the sun into food.
  4. Because they produce there own food.
  5.   They would die because they couldn't grow or turn the suns energy into food.
  6. Animals at the bottom of the food chain would die because they wouldn't have any food, and then there predators would die because they wouldn't have anything to eat.
  7. Oxygen, sunlight, carbon dioxide and soil.
  8. The carbon dioxide gets turned into oxygen.
  9. The carbon dioxide goes in and oxygen comes out.

  1. Choose one of your Food Chains that you created and explain how it works.
  2. Can a Food Web be considered a "system"? Why or why not?
  3. What happens if a plant or animal all of a sudden disappears from the food web?
  4. Using this food chain, "sunlight to apple to worm to bird to cat," How do organisms in this food chain get the matter they need for body repair and growth?
  5. Using the same food chain in #4, How do organisms in that food chain get the energy they need for body warmth and motion?
  6. What do you think happens to the matter that is NOT used by the organisms in a food chain or food web? Is it wasted or does something else happen?
Answers:
  1. . I had House Cat, Salamander, Daddy Longlegs. The cat eats the salamander which eats the daddy Longlegs
  2. . Yes. It is a system because it is a bunch of things happening to effect each other and it keeps going  whenever something gets eaten. 
  3. . If something disappears from a food web it effects the whole food web because whatever ate the thing that disappears now has less to eat which means less energy goes through the food chain, making it harder for animals to survive.
  4. . They get the matter from the stuff they eat. So the worm gets a piece of apples matter and the bird gets the matter by eating the worm and so on.
  5. . The sun gives energy to the apple. Then,the worm eats the apple and gets some of that energy from the sun. The energy from the sun keeps getting transferred every time one of the organisms gets eaten. 
  6. . The extra matter is stored in there bodies.

Answer the following questions while analyzing the Nutrition Labels:
  1. As a result of looking at food labels, what did you learn about food?
  2. Look at the ingredients of one human food label. Write down the food name. What ingredients came from animals?
  3. What ingredients in the above food label came from plants?
  4. What similarities and differences did you notice between the human food and pet food labels you looked at?
  5. Choose an animal/insect from the ecosystem walk. What do you think it eats? Explain what you think it gets from its food.
Answers:
  1. . That the percentages were based of the amount your body needs For the whole day.
  2. .Tomato soup. Nothing came from animals.
  3. .Soy beans and carrots
  4. .The ingredients were very different and so were the vitamins.
  5. .The ants eat grass and get energy and matter.

  2. Do the pet food and human food have the same nutrients? In what ways are they different?
  3. Does a higher calorie count mean a food is better for pets to eat? What makes pet owners think that?
  4. What is it in food that helps us repair our bodies and grow?
  5. What in food helps us move and stay warm?
  6. In what way does energy transfer when animals eat food?
  7. Look at the nutrition label below for milk. How much energy is in the food?
  8. What matter is in the food
  1. .It provides us with matter and energy.
  2. .They have different nutrients and different ingredients.
  3. .Yes because they give the pet more energy.
