Observing Shadow Patterns

Reflection Questions:

1. How are shadows made outside in the daytime? Provide some evidence to support your answer.
2. Can shadows be made inside the classroom? If so, how?
3. Do outside shadows change during the day? If so, how? Refer to the pole or stick the class observed outside if needed.
4. Think about the time between observations of the pole’s shadow. What happened?
5. What does this (the answer to #4) tell you about the sun’s position in the sky?
6. Insert one or two photos (from mine above) into your blog post to help you explain how the sun's position appears to follow an arc throughout the day.

Answers:

1. Shadows are made in the daytime by the sun's light. Shadows are made because you are blocking the sun's light. Then, the spot on the ground that is not being lit up is your shadow.
2. Yes. It is yes because there is light in the classroom, and you are blocking it. Even if you aren't outside if there is light your body will block it to cause a shadow.
3. Shadows do change throughout the day. They change the direction they are facing. The sun throughout the day moves on an arc. When the sun goes farther up or down the arc the length and the way the shadow is facing changes.
4. The shadow got smaller before 12:00 pm but, it got a lot bigger after about 1:00 pm. The shadow also changed directions when the sun started going west.
5. It tells me that it goes up high and low. It tells me that because the higher up the sun got the shorter the shadow got. Also, when it got lower the shadow kept getting longer. 
6. Weather didn't permit.
