Before Reading How does the title help me know what this text is going to be about? It helps me know what the book might be about because it kind of gives away that the book will have a box, and it will be Henry's. What do I know about this topic or subject? I know about this topic that slavery is very wrong and I don't like it at all. When ever I think of slavery I cringe and think of terrible whipping. What questions do I have? What will happen in this book is that he will try to get free involving a box. What type of nonfiction is this? How does that help me prepare for this read? I think that this type of nonfiction will sound like it can happen but it might have not really happened. Is there a particular way that the text is structured? There is because inside of the book the text was kind of surrounding the images. It looks pretty cool. | During Reading What do I understand? Now I understand that if a slave knows their birthday they are free. Now I understand why everything was building up so much. Because his wife and kids were just sold. Oh my gosh I am so astonished. What is unclear? Will Henry actually hide in a box and get mailed to freedom? What new questions do I have? Will Henry ever see his family again? Why can't slaves sing? Will they get whipped or poked? What will happen to Henry and his children and his wife? Will they be separated? Can they do anything to prevent this from happening? Will they ever see each other again? How will Henry mail himself? Isn't he too big to fit in a box? What if he, after he got to Philadelphia, got an infection and died? What if he kept getting thrown around like that? What if he gets a concussion? | After Reading What have I learned? I learned that Henry Box Brown was a real live person. Also this really happened to him, he mailed himself to freedom. What are the important ideas that stuck with me? What new or lingering questions do I have? Have there been more slaves that travel in boxes and get mailed to freedom? Did Henry ever see his family again? Where did he work and in what town did he work in? |
