KinderPals Reflection

Questions ----->

My reflection answers

  1. What is the KinderPals Program?
  2. In what ways do you think the program benefits the kindergartners? Try to explain several with support.
  3. Why is the KinderPals program beneficial to 5th graders? Believe it or not, you should be getting something out of the program as well!
  4. What challenges did you experience in KinderPals this year?
  5. What improvements could be made to the program for next year?
  6. Do you think the kindergartners enjoyed the stories from Peekapak? Why do you think that? Do you have any evidence to support your answer?
1. KiderPals is a program where you teach kindergarteners life skills. Another thing that KinderPals uses is PeekaPak.com. PeekaPak.com is a program that  we use that have made up stories and characters to portray some real life emotions. Another thing that PeekaPak.com does is there is a book with a specific emotion that they talk about. we've done: Self-Regulation,Respect,Teamwork,Empathy,Honesty, and Courage.

2.I think that the program helps the  kindergartners by teaching them valuable emotions and how to handle them. My partner, after I taught them courage, was speaking up to me and her teacher when she was supposed to. Another thing was she told me that she was raining her hand more often, and playing with new kids.

3. I think it is showing us how to teach others in a more effective way then just words. Also it taught us how to interpret what the program has given us to teach, in our own personal way. Another thing it teaches us is how to adapt to other people's understanding, and how to help them understand the information that they are given, and how to use it

4. Some challenges I experienced were: focus and understanding from my partner. I think my partner got "bored" when I started reading the book and she would just zone off. She also had some issues with understanding the big words and when I explained them she still did not understand.

5. I think some input I have is there should be a brief summary of what happened in the lesson. I think that because it will help us cover more than just the letter, games and book. I also think that the kid will have a better understanding of what they should have gotten out of the lesson.

6.I think my buddy enjoyed the peeka pac program. I think that because they really remembered what happened in the lesson before, and the characters. My evidence is that she really put these lessons into account in her daily life, and she used them with me, her teachers and family. I will really miss kinder pals.

Reflection/Synthesis:
Answer the following questions in your blog post. Remember to have at least one follow-up sentence for each question, when possible.
  1. Name your Control Variables (What will stay the same for each of the three cups)?
  2. Name the Independent Variable (What is it that is different for each of the three cups)?
  3. Name your Dependent Variable (What is it that you are testing & recording data on?)
  4. What data are you collecting to serve as Evidence to show how plants grow in organic material versus inorganic planting material?
  5. Why is everyone starting with the same three cups? Why do we need to test so many plants?
  6. What sprouts first in a seed: the stem or the root? How do you know?
  7. How do the pictures below prove your answer for #6?

Answers:
  1. The thing that will stay the same about all of the variables is the seed. We all planted the same seed on the same day, and they all got the same treatment.
  2. The independent variable is the soil. There were multiple kinds of "soil" such as: peat moss, seed starter, potting soil, worm castings, sand, popcorn kernels, and pearlite.
  3. How well the plants grow in the different types of soil, and how they differ from each other.
  4. The evidence we are showing is how tall the plant geyes to grow, and if it dies or not.
  5. We need ro test so many plants because one plant might not be as good as the others, so it might die. But we test more plants to make sure none of them are bad , and that they all have the same reaction to the soil.
  6. The roots sprout first. The roots sprout first looking for the water that the plant is ficen. Roots are the plant's " mouth" they suck in the water and nutrients the plant needs frpm the soil.

Independent Variable

  • Plant seeds in different kinds of soil (e.g. potting soil, perlite, sand, etc.)

Dependent Variables

  • Measure the height of each plant at certain checkpoints.

Evidence

  • We can record our data using measurements (in cm).

Plants as Producers

Reflection/Synthesis:
Answer the following questions in your blog post. Remember to have at least one follow-up sentence for each question, when possible.
  1. Plants need energy and matter to grow. Where do plants get their ENERGY?
  2. Where do plants get their MATTER?
  3. Where do plants get their FOOD (be careful - this is a trick question)?
  4. Why are plants called Producers?
  5. What would happen if plants didn't have a way to get energy?
  6. What would happen to animals if there were no plants to eat?
  7. What are some of the LIVING components of a plant "system"? (A plant "system" is everything that a plant needs to survive and everything it produces.)
  8. What are some of the NON-LIVING components of a plant "system"?
  9. In what ways do the components of the system interact?
  10. What matter is transported in and out of the plant system?
Answers:
  1. The plants get their energy from the sun, whose light they turn into their food. The sun's rays get absorbed by the plant which turns into glucose a type of sugar to give the plant its energy.
  2. The plant gets it's matter from the nutrients that it gets from the soil it's in and from the water that it soaks up in it's roots.
  3. The plants get their food from themselves. They give themselves their own food from turning the suns rays into glucose, when it is mixed with the other nutrients the plants get.
  4. Plants are called producers because they can produce their own food, and it it the bottom of the food chain, producing food for the animal that eats it.
  5. If the plant had no way to make energy it would die, and then the herbivores would die, and then some of the secondary consumers that ate the herbivores would die. The food chain would be all out of wack.
  6. If their were no plants the herbivores would eventually die out from starvation. If the herbivores died some of the carnivores would die because they would have eaten that herbivore.
  7. The plant's living parts are the chloroplast, and the chlorophyll. The chloroplast and chlorophyll are the cells that are within the plant that cause it to be green.
  8. Some of the nonliving things in a " plant system" include: the soil, water, and carbon dioxide.
  9. The components of a system interact by putting different things together and taking them apart to help photosynthesis process, and to help the plant develop all of it's parts.
  10. The matter that is transported in and out of the plant system is oxygen. Oxygen is transported in by carbon dioxide, and out by the plants " skin" or flesh because the plant does not really need it.

Answer the following questions in your blog post. Remember to have at least one follow-up sentence for each question, when possible.
  1. Choose one of your Food Chains that you created and explain how it works.
  2. Can a Food Web be considered a "system"? Why or why not?
  3. What happens if a plant or animal all of a sudden disappears from the food web?
  4. Using this food chain, "sunlight to apple to worm to bird to cat," How do organisms in this food chain get the matter they need for body repair and growth?
  5. Using the same food chain in #4, How do organisms in that food chain get the energy they need for body warmth and motion?
  6. What do you think happens to the matter that is NOT used by the organisms in a food chain or food web? Is it wasted or does something else happen?
Answers:
  1. I'm going to choose my Mind Mup food chain that it up above. The sun is the first thing in all food chains, it gives energy to the producer ( the plant) in my case it is grass. The producer gives energy and matter to the primary consumer, so in this case the grass is giving energy and matter  to the grasshopper. The primary consumer gives energy and matter to the secondary consumer, which is the grasshopper to the mouse. The secondary consumer gives energy and matter to the other secondary consumer, because there can be multiple, in this case it is the mouse to the snake. The last secondary consumer gives energy and matter to the animal at the top of the food chain, in which case is the snake to the Eagle.
  2. Yes. The Food Web can be considered a "system" because energy flows through it, and matter gets transferred from thing to thing in the Food Web.
  3. Everything shifts in the food web. For example in the crash course we watched it said, if all the spider monkeys died the fruit supply that they ate would be come fewer. I know that because the spider monkeys poop out the seeds and spread them around, and the poop is good fertilizer to help the plants grow. Also other species would die out because they either ate spider monkeys, or their food went down. that happens because they all depend on each other.
  4. The things in that food web get matter from the things that they eat. I have evidence. My evidence is if you eat to much food you will get more matter from fats and fiber  and things that are in the food.
  5.  The apple gets those things from the sun and the food that it's body makes from the photosynthesis production. The worm gets the matter from the apple which takes up space and as weight, which are the properties all matter has. The bird gets food from the worm who is matter, and that is one of the many examples of how matter cycles through the food web. The cat gets matter from the bird because of all the reasons above, and matter is the stuff that repairs things and gives them heat.
  6. The things that are not used by the food web such as poisonous Mushrooms, have other purposes. In this example the mushroom is a decomposer. It breaks up dead plants and animals that are not eaten or used into soil. Everything in the world has a purpose that counts for this too.

Food Matter and Energy

On the human food label:
  1. How do we find the energy (calories) per serving?
  2. How do we find the matter (carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins, minerals)?
  3. Where can we locate the list of ingredients?
Answers:
1.What you do is you look towards the middle of the label  until you find the word calories, then you look next to the calories to find the percentage.(%)

2.You look in the middle of the label and there will be columns with all of those words on it, and you can find the percentages next to the word.

3.It is located at the bottom of the food label. The ingredients are listed from what it is mostly made of, to the stuff there is only a drop of.

On the pet food label:
  1. Where can we locate the list of ingredients?
  2. How do we find the percentage of different types of matter in the food?
Answer the following questions while analyzing the Nutrition Labels:
  1. As a result of looking at food labels, what did you learn about food?
  2. Look at the ingredients of one human food label. Write down the food name. What ingredients came from animals?
  3. What ingredients in the above food label came from plants?
  4. What similarities and differences did you notice between the human food and pet food labels you looked at?
  5. Choose an animal/insect from the ecosystem walk. What do you think it eats? Explain what you think it gets from its food.
Answers:
1 At the top of the label, from greatest used to least used.

2 That is next to the  ingredients listed on the bottom.

1 I learned that you can eat Iron, and I looked it up and it turns out it is a good source of oxygen and is good for red blood cells .

2 The food is tomato soup.  There are no animal products in tomato soup.

3 There is tomato paste, corn syrup, soy bean oil, Carrot fiber, and sugar. I know that because tomatoes grow from the ground, soy beans also grow from the ground, and carrots are roots.

4 I noticed that they had some of the same ingredients, but the set up of the dog label was different.

5 I was absent for that lesson

Lake Ecosystem INTERACTIONS

Within a system of living things

  • Ducks eat plants
  • ducks eat bugs
  • Ducks eat fish
  • Ducks quack at each other to communicate

Between living & non-living things

  • Ducks breathe air (oxygen)
  • The ducks swim in the water
  • ducks fly in the air
  • Plants absorb the water

Lake Ecosystem INTERACTIONS

Within a system of living things

  • Fish eat the plants
  • The fish hide in the plants
  • fish eat fish
  •  fish algae

Reflect & Synthesize:

When you think you have ALL of the interactions for the duck, go on to the fish and do the same within the chart.
  1. What other kinds of living things (organisms) do you see in either picture?
  2. What other living things might be here, even if you can't see them in the photos?
  3. Why might living things in these photos interact with each other?
  4. Read the BIG IDEA below. How do these pictures depict an ecosystem?

Between living & non-living things

  • The Fish swim in the water
  • The plants grow in the dirt
  • The plants absorb the water that they are in
  • fish absorb water

Answers:

1 I see lots of ducks in the water, as well as lots of plants in and out of the water. Also

2 Micro organisms might be living in the water  as well as fish being in the water below them. I also think it is a real possibility that there is algae living in the water below them with seaweed as well.

3 Living things might interact with each other to survive as well as to have fun. They might interact to survive because they want to live, and they don't want to be in pain. They might to it for fun by quacking and communicating with the other ducks in the pond.

4 These pictures show ecosystems because they both show living things reacting with living and non living things. I know hat because the ducks are interacting with the nonliving water by swimming in it. In the fish picture it shows the living fish reacting with the living seaweed by hiding in it and or eating it.

My poem about music:

Music can be frilly funky and fun
people young and old it is for everyone
I love to sing and play the keyboard
I have worked on every chord

I haven't gotten the courage to sing for anyone
Although I know it is something that really can be done
I need to step into the spotlight while I’ve got the chance
I really need to take my ground and make up a stance

Questions:

  1. What was the hardest part of writing your preamble? Explain how you overcame that challenge.
  2. What is your favorite part of your preamble? Why is that part powerful and important?
  3. What is the purpose of a preamble in a constitution? What does it do?

Answers

1 Finding good phrases and putting them into our own words. I think we overcame the challenge by looking at the main idea of the phrase and writing that down.

2 I think my favorite part of my preamble is the part where we said: we have individual responsibilities well as group things we need to accomplish. That is my favorite part because it shows that we are one country and not ourselves, and I also think it sums us up as a classroom as well as a colonization.

3 The purpose of a preamble is to give us a summary of the government, and to introduce us to the constitution. Also it states what we believe in as a country and what we stand for.
