  1. Where do you think the items came from originally?

  7. What evidence do you have that the items were all once part of a living thing?
  8. Another name for "nature's waste" is "organic remains." These are all organisms that are no longer living, or parts of organisms that are discarded, excreted, or no longer needed.  What other examples of organic remains can you think of?
  9. What would happen to each item from your bag if it were left outside? What might it look like in 6 months? What would cause it to change?
  10. What would eventually happen to the waste MATTER in each type of organic remain?
  11. Why isn't the earth just piled up with all the matter from nature's waste?
  12. Why could all of the items in the mystery bags be classified as nature's waste?
  13. Do you think that all living things generate waste? What makes you think that?

Answers

  1. I think that they all came from plants. All of the plants came from a different plant. The pinecone came from an evergreen tree, the leaf came from a tree, wood chips came from a tree and the flower came from the ground.
  2. No because everything changes over time and even humans grow over time. No body looks the same as it did before. The grass could ave grown and it could have changed colors. Maybe it was yellow before.
  3. It started getting dehadrated and would have changed. It could have grown, gotten greener or yellow/changed color, seeds going into plants and the wood becoming lots of different chips.
  4. I don't think so because they will be getting more different. The plant can grow or produce more seeds. A human always will get older and never look the same.
  5. They all came from plants. A plant will ALWAYS gets sunlight, warmth and energy from the Sun. The plant ALWAYS gets water from rain or someone watering them. Sometimes a human might need to water the plant because it needs certain things to stay alive.
  6. All of the stuff that are in the bin are from plants. The stick comes from an tree, a pinecone comes from an evergreen and there are a lot of other plants, that some of the things in the box come from.
  7. They were once living things because they all feel or were picked out of the ground. The pine needles fell off the evergreen tree and that is also where the pinecone came off of a tree, the flower is a plant and sometimes will be pollunted by a bee and the bee will go help another plant. That flower might die because it lost all of its pollen.
  8. Something that isn't living is a dead animal. It was once living and some how it died, and another animal will go and eat the remaining meat. Another one is a tree because when it falls down, the roots are no longer in the soil. The roots were what gives the tree its nutrients, water and other needs.
  9. Some of the things like the seeds or pinecones, would possibly grow into actual living things. In example trees and maybe other plants. The flower might get pollined and make another plant.
  10. The matter would decompose. This means that it won't be a living thing or unliving thing but it would make the world a better place because then you could make more plants and organisms. This is like molch because you put this into the soil and you are using plants that aren't living, into something that will become living and help the plant grow.
  11. The Earth isn't because the plant will break down and help another plant grow. Something might use it for a food or to grow into a new plant.
  12. They would be classifed as nature because once the plant starts dying and doesn't get any Sun anymore. They will then decompose and turn into something that they Earth can reuse.
  13. I think that all living things have waste because animals, let is come out of them. Plants will make things fall off of them like leaves and pinecones. Everything needs to have a way to give off the things that they don't need.

Answers

  1. I am trying to explain that all things that go to the ground, will one day decompose and turn into something new for another plant. This is like a new nutrients and people can make it themselves. Your plant is reusing the stuff that they don't need anymore, so that a new plant has somethings that they need.
  2. How do plants and other things decompose? They do decompose because that is like dying for humans. Humans need to die because they are getting too old to live. I wonder if that is the same with plants?

Answers

  1. It changed over time because the organic item didn't always look the same. The matter started out like a pine cone and over time, it will decompose into soil. You can reuse that for growing new plants.
  2. The matter started decomposing and turning color. It would probably turn brown and the texture would change. If it was hard and couldn't break, when it starts decomposing it will become soft and you can break it.
  3. It doesn't look the same. If it was green, now it is a new color. When a plant starts decomposing, it will change into soil, the soil doesn't look like the old organic item used to. Everything changes but it doesn't happen instantly. 
  4. The thing that made it change, when it fell to the ground or away from the plant. That plant then wasn't giving that organic item, enough water and nutrients that it needs. It will then let that organic item off of the plant or when it fell to the ground.
  5. No matter stays the same all the time. Even humans change, like hair growth and growing in general. If you planted a plant in the yard, it wouldn't look like it did when you planted it. Everything changes over time, it wouldn't come in one day though.
  6. When you look at a pine tree, it looks really small. It starts growing and pine cones and pines will start falling off. The pine cone will then act as a seed and will break apart and make more pine trees.
  7. I would change the items that I was experimenting with. That way, can see what happens to lots of different waste. What happens when it has decompose and what happens when it falls to the ground? Would it make a new plant? Would an animal eat?

Answers

  1. ​Every ingredient can be traced back to plants because an animal will eat the plant and that plant got its energy from the Sun. Then humans will kill that animal for food. We humans get some of our energy from our food and some of the energy, that is in the food, comes from the Sun.
  2. It can be traced back to the Sun because, you just need to think of all of the things that food is made out of. After you find the ingredients, you need to find out how that food is made, like the animal. That animal will eat some kind of food that was made from the Sun and nutrients.
  3. Some of the matter that came from the producers  was the grass or plant. That is what the Sun made and then an animal ate it. We killed that animal, so we sort-of also ate come grass.
  4. All foods give you energy and it isn't always from the Sun. All foods have protein and that can give you energy. The Sun makes the plant grow, then an animal will eat that plant, then humans will kill that animal for food. 
  5. It is transferred from the Sun because the Sun will make the producer, then the primary consumer will eat the producer. Then us humans will kill that animal and eat it. It will give us energy, protein and matter.

Answers

  1. The plants get there energy from the sun. Plants are called producers because they need something to give them their energy. They also make sugars or glucose. If the plant is in a dark room, it will get its energy from the seed. They don't go and hunt for their food.
  2. Plants get their matter mostly from carbon dioxide. The plant will breathe in the carbon dioxide and breathe out the oxygen. That is what humans and animals breathe in.
  3. The plant will get its energy from the Sun and then will convert that into food. This whole cycle is called photosynthesis and that is how the plant gets its food.
  4. They are called producers because they get their energy from the Sun and not from eating or drinking a food. They don't need to eat food or drink a liquid to get their energy.
  5. The plant would die because from the Sun, they don't just get energy but also food. That process is called photosynthesis and everything on Earth needs food to survive. 
  6. They would die because they need that food to survive. There would start not being a lot of that animal in the wild because the predators are eating it or because the animal doesn't have anything to eat.
  7. A plant needs the Sun to stay warm, the sugars that it produces to get some energy, carbon dioxide to breathe, and photosynthesis is food. Chlorophyll makes food from the carbon dioxide that the plant breathes in.
  8. Soil, air, water and sunlight. When the Sun hits the plant, it will trickle down and the water will keep the plant moist, the soil will then bring all of that to the plant. The air could be carbon dioxide and the plant lets out oxygen for animals and humans.
  9. They interact because if one of the components wasn't there, the whole system wound't work. The system needs the Sun for energy, they need water to grow and they need the soil to grow in and absorb all of the needs of the plant. It would also hold everything, like the nutrients.
  10. The matter that is transported in and out is oxygen because carbon dioxide comes in and oxygen comes out. That is because the plant breathes in carbon dioxide and the plant will breathe out oxygen.

  1. That food and labels usually saw per serving of blank. They don't just say the whole bear box and they don't just stay one of the things in the bag or box. ​They suggest a certain amount and it is your choice if you use those labels.
  2. This is peanut butter and that doesn't have any meat, so that means that nothing really comes from an animal. If there were eggs, then that would come from chickens, but nothing came from any animals.
  3. Some sugars come from plants but I don't know if it is this correct sugar. Tomato come from a plant and there is tomato puree. Also soybeans are a plant and there is soybean oil in the food.
  4. The human food labels seem like they are more precise on everything that is in the product because in the pet food, they just stay the ingredients and some measurements. Both of the foods have protein and fat even if it is called something different. 
  5. I think that I worm eats dirt and from that dirt, it gets the nutrients that it needs and energy to move. Also it would make him grow a bit and give the worm matter. It might give him some warmth when the worm is exposed to the sunlight. They don't like that sunlight, so the food and dirt keep the worm warm.

Answers

  1. Food provides warmth, motion, body repair and growth. The body repair means when you are hurt, the food that you eat will help that scratch heal. Sometimes if you don't burn off everything that you eat, it will stain your body and it would then become fat. Motion is when you need to run around and be active and growth is when you are growing from the healthy choices that you are making.
  2. They have about the same nutrients because the pet food shows the minimum and sometimes the maximum. Humans just get how many grams of that ingredient. They both have protein but I think both of them get the same amount of protein. In the pet food, it is how much is part of that food in percents and human food is just a straight number from the cup too.
  3. It is good and bad. It is good because the pet will then have more energy but the bad news is, that they will then need to burn off those calories. If they don't burn them off, they would get bigger than they are supposed to. You just need to make sure that they do a lot of exercise after they eat something that has a lot of calories. 
  4. The protein that is in the food helps because all of the healthy stuff that is in, will break apart and the blood will travel it to lots of other places in your body. So that they can repair anything that needs to be repaired and it will make us gain matter and that helps us grow.
  5. The calories in our food help us move because if we eat sugary foods, we are sometimes hyper and that will get us to run around. If you don't burn off all of the calories, then they will turn into body fat and that keeps us warm.
  6. Energy transfers from everything that you eat and it will transfer just a smidge every time something eats something else. The animal will still get some of the energy but only 10% of the animals energy from that food (animal that it eats). 
  7. There is about 160 calories and that is what you get your energy from. You just need to remember to burn off the extras and not just sit at home. If there was less, you would get less energy and if there are more calories, then you would get more energy.
  8. The matter that is in the food is most likely, the things that way the most. Those happen to be protein and fat. Those will fix your body if needed, give you more warmth if you don't burn them off and the way to get energy to run around. If the protein goes to the muscle, the muscle will weigh more then the fat.

  2. Can a Food Web be considered a "system"? Why or why not?

Answers

  1. What happens is that the Sun will make the grass grow, then once that grass has grown, the bunny will hop on over and eat some grass. After all of that, a couple days later, an eagle will come and pick up the bunny. He will then eat that. The whole process then starts again.
  2. It can be because I system does the same thing over and over again. It never changes. The food web never changes because an animal will eat a producer, the animal that ate the plant, would be called the primary consumer. There might be more consumers and the last animal is the top predator and no animal eats that animal.
  3. If anything disappears from the food web, everything wouldn't be correct. If animals keep eating all of the plants, and the plants stop growing, those animals would starve. Then those would die and the next animal would die and so on.
  4. They get it from the thing that is in front of it. The apple gets its matter from the sunlight, then the worm will get his matter from the apple. The bird will get his matter from the worm and the cat will get its matter from the bird. Everyone would get matter and that helps with being active, your body repairing its self, warmth and growth. This only happens if the thing can move and not is like a plant or apple. 
  5. They get it from eating the thing that is in front of it. The apple gets its motion and warmth from the sunlight, then the worm will get its motion and warmth from the apple. The bird will get its motion and warmth from the worm and the cat will get its motion and warmth from the bird. Everything comes from what you eat.
  6. I think that it will be stored up as fat in the body. Maybe some of it will come out when you need to go but since you didn't burn it off (being active), your body doesn't know what to do with it. They think that you should keep it when it is most needed. That is why you always need to excercise and not just eat unhealthy foods and sit on the couch.

Within a system of living things

Answers:

  1. Living things get a lot of things from that Ecosystems. That Ecosystem gives those animals oxygen, food and sunlight. The Ecosystem might also give an animal or plant soil to grow in. It might also give shade because the trees can block the Sun. Some trees grow nuts, so then animals can eat those and animals sometimes will eat other animals. Like a bird eats worms that are in the ground of on land. 
  2. All animals need something different and there ecosystems gives it to them. The ecosystem will give them certain things and that animal will need to find the others. If the animal needs a place to sleep, find a rock, be in the soil or in a tree. There are a lot of different places that you can sleep in. 
  3. It means your surroundings in that area and if it is your home. Everyone has a different one but they always have oxygen, plants and sunlight. Animals get something different from that ecosystem then we would get. It all depends where you are and what your basic needs are. You always need food, shelter, water and oxygen.
  4. Why do some animals have one ecosystem and why do other animals not have that same ecosystem? All animals have the same needs but a bird doesn't live in the arctic and a penguin doesn't live outside your house. All animals and people need to adapt to there environment even if it is a new one. People need to adapt when they go somewhere that has a different timezone as your home town does. Animals need to adapt when they are born, to the new habitat that they were born in.
  5. A living thing that I see is a deer. Something non-living is a tree, rocks, water, and clouds. The deer interact with the non-living ting because the deer eat the grass. The rocks are next to the water, the clouds are in the sky and the tree gives the deer oxygen. The deer might also eat leaves off of the tree. 
  6. The deer eats the grass, the deer might drink the water and the deer might go interact with other deer. The deer do most of it because there might be other animals that live in this ecosystem but, we aren't positive and maybe that animal actually doesn't. There are no flowers, so a bee can't pollinate it and not a lot of animals might live in this ecosystem, so they can't drink a lot of the water.

First Paragraph

     My first week in Mars was exciting and an adventurous experience. I would have never thought of a more awesome journey. Everyone that was going to Mars was getting onto the spacecraft. I was walking with my besties Elizabeth, Sophia, Mia and Nicole. We got on and sat down and started talking. We saw lots of others coming on and everyone was from somewhere different. The pilots were already there and they were about to close the door. The door closed and I started getting scared. I grabbed Elizabeth and Sophia hands and started talking about something that I love to talk about. I looked up and could hear people counting down for lift off. I could hear the rumbling and Nicole’s legs shaking. I couldn’t believe that I was on my way to be one of the first people on Mars. I still am looking around and can see so many other people talking with each other. I see someone who looks like she is from Puerto Rico, Argentina, Thailand, United States of America, Canada and many more. I couldn’t believe all of these people were here and everyone just started talking to each other. Elizabeth and Sophia were related in a way so they were together and then I started talking to them. Then two other people came over and there names were Mia and Nicole. They were really nice. We played a lot of games like my game from France. What we do is pretend that we are walking the runway but instead we do everything wrong. We just show what will happen and all I could do was laugh. From United Kingdom, Elizabeth showed us how to play Ticket to Ride. That was about trains and how Pennsylvania is different from United Kingdom. From Italy, Nicole showed us how to play a game that she made up. It is called Guess that Food and they are all foods from Italy and you need to say them correctly and say the correct food. From Australia, Sophia taught us how to play a game that she also made up and you need to use the game pieces and move them around the board to make it thru the jungle. They are all different animals from Australia. I looked out the window and saw some of the parts of the spacecraft fly off and it was so cool. I also saw garbage and pieces from the first spacecraft off into space. Finally the sat game that we played was from Germany and it was Mia’s, it was a really fun board game and it was one of the first that had the most people in Germany like it. We then just looked out the window and saw all of these stars. This all happened a week ago and it was scary and fun all at the same time. It was an experience that I will never forget and I am so happy to be doing it with my new friends!

Second Paragraph

     When I was on my way to Mars, I saw a lot of amazing sites and planets. When I was looking behind the spacecraft as we flew away from it. I remembered that my family was there and that they were happy that I was chosen to do this scary mission. I started getting emotional leaving my family because I was scared that I would never see them ever again. Mia saw that I wasn’t smiling like I always was. She saw that I was crying and wanted to comfort me. She started a conversation about what you liked to do where you live. I said that I liked to go to the park with my…. and that just made it more unhappy. They then realized that I missed my family and Mia felt so bad because she had just made it worse. Elizabeth comforted me and Sophia tried telling funny stories. Nicole always could make someone laugh and added funny burns or things to the funny story. We were all friends and would always comfort each other in these kinds of situations. I look out the window and could see all of these amazing stars and could just image what would happen if those were actual people. I always heard these legends of what the stars did and what they are called. Now I am really close up and I didn’t know that this would ever happen. As we travel farther away from Earth, I see Earth’s moon and I think to myself that my family is either looking at the same moon or sun as me, and I feel a little better. The Sun is so bright and I can’t believe that it is that big. Mia tells me that the sun is actually a star and then Nicole makes a really funny joke about it. I couldn’t stop laughing about it. I am so happy to have friends that make me laugh and will tell me new things and there experiences. The constellations are so cool and they all look so amazing. I have a sheet from my lab and I hand it out to Mia, Nicole, Sophia and Elizabeth and it shows all of the constellations in the sky. We then look out the window and we try seeing some constellations but there are so many that we can’t make out any of them. Once we are getting closer to Mars, I can see Jupiter right next to Mars. It is really big compared to Mars and I can’t believe that I am right next to it. I show all of my friends what that is and they are so inspired to be seeing it at that exact moment. I never had dreamed of being this close to The Big Planet and now I was about to set foot on The Red Planet. I am excited and scared to be on this planet. I always dreamed of doing this!

Fourth Paragraph

Since it has been a long journey to get to the Red Planet, we had to find a lot of things to do. A lot of the boys just were on their phones and would get so upset when it died. They didn’t have anything else to do and I was just wondering why they didn’t like to do anything except be on their phone. Back to the girls and what we were doing. We didn’t need to use our phone because we had some games that we played at blast off. When we got bored of that, we might exercise. It all depended who was using the materials at a time, so sometimes one person would go and the rest of us would need to stay in the chairs. We started weird conversations or we just talked about what we do at home or what we did when we were a child. It got funny and sometimes it was just sad to think that all of this happened to that person. I tried not to show a lot of emotion because sometimes it hurts someone and other times it didn’t matter. We got hungry because it was a really long journey and everyone needs to eat everyday. Since we were in space, the food floated straight to our mouths. Elizabeth thought that it was so cool that it floated. Sometimes we would read books, draw or sleep. We could color books or just draw things that we found on our phones. Elizabeth could draw amazing things, Mia brought neon crayons and markers, Nicole brought paper and all Sophia wanted to draw was her dog. The boys wanted to use the paper to make paper airplanes. We didn’t really read any books because it was too loud. We sometimes would do Would you Rather and learn about each other. I learned that Mia loves to dance, Elizabeth loves to play basketball, Sophia loves to pitch in softball and Nicole likes to play soccer. I got tired and sometimes would actually go to my bed. I sometimes wouldn’t because everyone else was sleeping right where they were. I learned a lot and I would had never done that if I wasn’t on this journey!

    I am Léa Andre, a Gravity Expert from Paris, France. It would be very important to have a Gravity Expert on the first manned mission to Mars because I think that it is important to know Mars’ gravity. If we know what the gravity is like, we will know what kind of materials we will need to start the village. We will also know what to tell people, so that they can be prepared. It is also important to know because then we know how strong it is and to know if people can float off of the Red Planet. I am excited to go on this adventure because I would be one of the first people to fly to Mars and get to explore its wonders. I will also learn all of the cool stuff about Mars and learn if there once was any life and if there still is. I can come back and tell my family what happened and what it was like.
