How can I teach people about tenkara fishing? By: Andrew and Lucas

What do we Know?

We know that tenkara fishing is an Asian type of fishing. Also that the rods have no reels so you have to use your hands, and that it is made to be used in streams. We also know that you can't catch huge fish with it or your rod will break.

What did we learn?

We learned that tenkara fishing is a lot like fly fishing and not really like fly fishing. We also learned that tenkara fishing can't handle big fish. Also that it is made for small streams. Last we learned that it is a really fun thing to learn about.

What do we Want to Know?

Is tenkara fishing easier than normal fly fishing. If me and Andrew can make a working tenkara rod using school supplies. Also if you can catch the same fish as regular fishing and what the differences are in both types of fishing.

What Action Did we Take?

Lucas and I made a website to help others learn about tenkara fishing so more kids know about it. Also we made some videos on crafts for kids to do when they are bored and want to play a fun game or make a marking map.

How will we Learn the Information?

We will make videos and watch videos. Also that we will use google to find more information, and we will take pictures. We will also use the information we already know about tenkara fishing.

What Questions do we Still Have?

We are still wondering how we can land a fish, and how to tie the tippet on. Also how it got invented and how it got to America? Last but not least we are wondering what would happen if you got a big fish.

 Lucas's
Reflection

I loved this project at first I knew nothing  with help form Andrew and research in knew quit a bite.It was super fun to do the crafts  section and build all the arts and crafts. The website was fun for helping me learn about TENKARA fishing so I liked that and making the website was fun in itself. This project is pretty hard But I liked it.The most fun thing was making the crafts section was my favorite for making.I learned a lot about tenkara fishing I learned that it is Chinese and that it is like fly fishing and not like fly fishing. It wasn't that easy I thought it was pretty hard.I could try to make more detail in the KWHLAQ.

Andrews Reflection

The easiest thing was making the website because we had such a hard time finding good facts to use. This is because it didn't take much work to create it and we knew how to make it. The hardest part was finding our facts that would work for our website. Also finishing our passion project on time. What was fun was getting work with Lucas and getting to do a passion time on something I love! I could try to find more facts next tome so I can have more information on our website for others to see. If any one wanted to do something like this I suggest that you have some background knowledge on it or else it will be a little hard.

Can we design and build cars out of two or more motors and common things in the class room? Ben and Ryan

What we Know

We know that it is very hard to make a car with all of the aerodynamics and keeping the car on the ground, and making the car overall move. It is hard to make a real car but not as hard to make one that is small like ours will be. We know that it will take up some time, the wiring will be hard without having them drag. We know that it is also going to be a very fun project.

What we learned

We learned that to make a car you will have to know a lot about engineering so you can be able to balance the car and keep it controlled by someone. We learned that it can be more difficult then you would think, it is a lot of fun building it to because of the things to work together on and working with the wires.

What we want to know

We would like to know if we can really make a moving car without us having to push it. If making a car will help us with other electric things.  If making a car that is small can compare to a bigger car and what the speeds compare in small and big.

What action we took

Me and Ryan took the action of making a car out of regular classroom materials besides the wires and motors. We decided to make a video of the car and how we made it. We also finished the car and it was able to move. The actions we took lead us to success and helped us with our project!

How we will do it

Me and Ryan will try to construct a car made out of materials that are around the classroom (except for the wires and motors). We will make the car by taking the two motors in the back with the wires going up to the top with two wheels with no motors in front.

What Questions we still have

We are still wondering how to make a car that we can control with a remote or how to make one level and not tilt another way. We were also wondering how to make a car with more of better materials and how to make our car any better without weighing it down. We were trying to figure out how to level it but we couldn't get it. We would also try to make a car that has four wheels instead of 3.

Reflections -

Ryan - I liked this project because it was a lot more fun then just researching. It was a lot more hands-on and I loved that, I think next round ill try to do something similar like a hands on building passion time (that's one of the main reasons I liked this). The stuff I learned in this round the final product of the car was insane to what we started with to me. It worked if you watch the video above you'll see some of the things we made it do it went in a good 35 circles around our lunch room from just a tiny 9 volt battery. I wish we could work a lot longer on this awesome passion time and would say do it to anyone.
Ben - I loved this project because we actually made a car that could move around pretty quickly. I think me and Ryan worked very well together on this project because we were able to make a video and compromise on what the car will look like and how it will work. I also really liked it because of all of the hands on parts of the activity because of making the car. Me and Ryan did have some flaws but most of the time it was very fun working with him. Ryan really helped me with the wiring because I didn't know how to do it that well, Ryan showed me how to do the wires and where to connect them. Overall I really liked this project and hope to do another fun one like this again in passion time.

Can we find unique sports, learn how to play them, and make how-to videos? - Addie and Charlotte

What Do We Know?

What Do We Want to Know?

How Will We Learn The Information?

We know that there are so many unique sports in different parts of the world.  We also know that the sports do not seem unique or different to them (the people that are playing the sports) because it is part of their culture.  Just like, for example, football or basketball may seem odd to people from different parts of the world just because they don't play it normally.
We want to know if we can learn how to play different,  unique sports that aren't regular to us.  We are both very athletic and both know how to play so many sports, but I know that neither of us know, yet, how to play sports like blow ball or fireball soccer.  We also want to know where all of these different sports are being played.  We have some ideas on where they might be played and they might be Asia, Africa, Europe and Antarctica.  These might be the main places that the unique sports that we will research will be.
We will learn the information by watching videos about people playing games of their sports.  We will see different tips on how to play the sports in the best ways.  We will look on different websites that say the rules and how to play directions.  We will also give information in our how-to videos.

What did I Learn?

What Action Did I Take?

What Questions Do I Still Have?

We learned that there are many different types of weird sports, and we didn't even completely understand all of them.  Like for example when we made a video for sepak tekraw we didn't completely understand it, although we got the just of it.  We also learned that event the materials that these sports require are unique!  Like for example, when we made a video for mayan ball we didn't have a net to use, instead we used to chairs and balanced a ruler in between the 2 chairs.
The action that we took is we taught others about the lesser known sports of the world.  The way that we did this was we made videos on an iPad.  We found the rules for each sport and tried our best to understand them and then made a video for it.
Some questions that we still have are how come the different cultures cause different sport opinions?  Why don't people who come from different countries or states come to our state and country and have ideas to change our point of view on sports?  Could some of these sports become what we call "normal"?
Addie's reflection:
This project was super fun and probably my favorite project so far. I think that Charlotte and I worked extremely well together. The hardest part of our project was probably finding unique sports that we were actually able to do with the materials available to us. Charlotte and I came across lots of sports that we weren't able to do and we were frustrated with. I think that the easiest part was probably doing the sports once we actually understood them. I think that me and Charlotte worked really well together and that we had tons of fun. I think that playing these sports
Charlotte's reflection:
I really liked doing this project because we got to learn about different types of sports from different parts of the world.  The more challenging part of this project was making the videos though.  The reason that they were so challenging to make was because neither of us completely knew all the tips and exactly how to play each sport.  It was also hard because we didn't always have the exact thing or material that the sport called for.  Like we needed a net for one of the sports, we improvised and used a ruler instead.  But for some reason, that was also the funnest part of doing our project.  I actually liked improvising and finding something that worked as a material.  We had to look for different things that would fit what they actually use during playing the sport.  Mostly I liked this project because it was just fun overall.  I also liked working on finding different sports, because I like sports just in general.

What do I know?

  • I know steel is man made.
  • metal is a very strong material.
  • Metal is used in a bunch of different structures.
  • Metals are good for conducting electricity and heat.
  • Iron is one of the most commonly found materials one the earth's crust.

What did I learn?

  • I learned a ton about all different types of metals
  • I learned that metals specifically gold and silver were not commonly found with other materials.
  • Metals are used in many structures and are very strong materials.

What do I want to know?

  • I would like to know what different metals are used for.
  • I also want to know what the natural metals are used for.
  • What the main metals used for.

What action did I take?

  • I made a website for viewers to visit.
  • And made a trello card

How will I get the information?

  • I will research on the web for the different metals.
  • I will look into books for information.

What questions to I still have?

  • How did we first find all of these metals?d out
  • Why did we combine metals even though it still worked?
  • Did we need metals and was that why we went to look for them on the earths crust.
Reflection: I had a hard time finding a question so it wasn't a top of the line question but I enjoyed learning about the natural metals and man-made metals and all the uses of the different metals. I think it would have been more fun if I had a partner to help with some other misalliance tasks. I definitely learned a lot about all the different metals and there uses. Something that was a little harder was finding how they are made like with steel they didn't have a whole lot except for they blended them together in a blast furnace.

What do we know?

I know about a boomerang and a Frisbee and how it has lift and curve involved when it flies. A paper airplane's different folds can affect the way it flies. If the front has more weight it will fly farther. If the wings are a certain shape it will curve in different ways.

What did we learn?

I learned so much on this project. The main parts that answered the question was the four forces. Those were lift, thrust, drag, and weight. They all make whatever you are flying have enough lift, thrust, drag, and weight. I learned how Boomerang, a Frisbee, and a paper airplane.

What do we want to know ?

I want to know the details behind lift and how it curves. I want to know the science behind the objects flying, and maybe if there are certain ways to throw the object.

What action did we take?

I learned the information by researching, then making my blog post and my website and my screen cast. I learned 3 different objects and now am a expert on it.

How will I learn the information?

The way I will learn the information is by researching, then making my blog post and my website.

What questions do we still have?

I still want to know how different flying objects can curve. I also still want to know what different paper airplane folds affect how a paper airplane flies.
JJ Reflection:
I really was interested in this project. I was really locked in and focused. It truly was my passion and I was finding all the information so interesting. The only hard thing was when I was researching paper airplanes, there were different folds and that affected how it flew. One good thing was that the videos that I watched were very easy to understand. This was an really fun project. One piece of advice I would give others for this project is watch a lot of videos.

What do we know?

Hockey equipment can be very difficult to choose from and there are many choices to choose from. Some equipment that hockey players use today are CCM, Bauer, Warrior, Easton, Sherwood, Koho, Titan, Reebok, and Brian.

What do we want to know?

We want to know if we are able to make a website that helps first time hockey players what equipment to buy. We also want to know how to create a consumer style website like consumer reports. One more thing that we want to know is what other people think about the different hockey gear by making a survey.

How will we learn this information?

We will use different websites to find reviews on each product and we will watch videos on how the equipment preforms.

What did we learn?

We learned that any hockey equipment can be perfect for you. We are all different in many ways and we all like different things about our equipment. There is no perfect brand. We also learned many things about different hockey gear by researching and watching different videos.

What action did we take?

Some actions that we took were that we did reviews on our own equipment and some popular models that we don't have.

What Questions do we still have?

Some questions that we still have are how do they make hockey sticks and what technology is behind it. Another question we have is why did Taylormade teamed up with CCM to make the RBZ model sticks.

Stephen's Reflection

I liked doing this project because it was fun to learn how to make a consumer website. I learned how to create a consumer website and learned many different facts about many different types of hockey gear. It was fun to create a survey to see what other people think about different types of gear. I am still wondering how all the different consumer websites compete with each other and get people to go on their website. It was also cool to see how many people looked on are website and see how our website is doing.

Brady's Reflection

This was probably the most fun project I did this year. I think this because we helped people expand their hockey equipment information and help them choose hockey equipment. The coolest part of the passion time project is that I also learned about hockey equipment. My favorite part of the passion time project was making a survey. We saw what people like the best about hockey equipment and we saw results. My least favorite part of the project was that My partner was gone for 3 or 4 days out of the 10 days in the period so I didn't get as much done without him. Overall this was a great project and I hope people see our website.

What do we Know?

Pollution can be found in liquid, gas or solid form. In some parts of Asia people had to wear doctors masks because there is so much pollution. Humans are ruining the Earth in many ways, a main way is pollution. Pollution is a problem we need to work on preventing, as we have already done so much damage.

What did we Learn?

We learned that some countries need to stop polluting as much as they do right now and that some countries do not pollute as much as we think they do. Also we learned that it is not just cars and factories polluting it is the human beings that live in that area. We learned that Sudan needs to stop polluting as much as they do right now!!

What do we want to know?

We want to know our essential question. We want to know what part of the world contributes to pollution the worst. We also want to know how the pollution has put many countries in danger. We are wondering how populated area's pollution has been effecting Antarctica.

What Action did we take?

We made a poster about the pollution in different countries. we also made an iMovie explaining both of our charts.

How will we find the information?

We will use any books that are about are topic. We might ask an expert (Environmentalist). We also will use the internet for are main source of information.

What Questions do we still have?

We still wonder about why countries don't try to stop polluting as much. Also why is Sudan so polluted? Why is Egypt so much more polluted than the U.S.A.  What other things other than water, the air, and indoor spaces? How do the people measure air quality?
Cassidy's Reflection:
I really liked this passion time project because I have always wondered about the pollution in different countries. When we were brain storming projects I was really happy that we picked pollution. Even though I loved  this passion time project there was some difficulties too. One difficulty was we could not find a website for the pollution rates until there was 6 periods left. We also ran into a bump when we made all of our countries and then we decided that we had to change all of them because we could not find anything on those countries. Even though there was many bumps in the road there were some times where there was no bumps to be seen and we just plugged away. The times we plugged away were when we (finally) found out what we were actually doing. Another time was when we were making the posters because we both would work on one and get it done quickly. I really liked this passion time!!

Rachel's Reflection:
This passion time project was really very fun. There were definitely bumps and times that everything went wrong or we totally messed something up. But it all worked out in the end. This was also a relatively fun project. Cassidy was a fun partner to work with and I am glad I did a project with her. We really had many many many ideas about what to do but it all worked out in the end. Our chart/graph came out very good. The only thing I wished we found was a better website; it made our chart pretty confusing. But other wise it turned out great. I learned a lot of things, some of which weren't even the main focus of our project. One of which is about Sudan it is super polluted! One of our countries, Egypt was the most polluted. I really thought that India or the U.S.A would be the most polluted. I also learned to operate iMovie much quicker, better, and more efficiently. Overall this was a very fun passion project.

Can humans read animals' emotional states and if so, how? By: Audrey

What do we know?

I know that with cats, the different signs that a cat makes with it's tail, stands for different things like high and straight tail might mean its happy. When the tail is down, it might mean that it's mad. I also know that when a dag is mad, it might bite someone or something.

What did we learn?

I learned that animals act in different ways when they feel happy, sad, angry, or depressed. I learned what cats do when they have different emotions, what dogs do when they have different emotions, what Betta fish do when they have different emotions, and what bunnies do when they have different emotions. I also learned why those animals do what they do when they feel that way.

What do we want to know?

I want to know if humans can read animals emotional states and if is so, how do they do it. I'd like to know how people can do it with different animals like cats and other. I also would like to help others when they want to read their pets to see how they feel.

What action did we take?

My action that I took was going onto different websites and finding my information on them. I created a website and made a You Tube video telling people about the information that I found and explaining my websites.

How will I learn the information?

I will learn the information by reading books, researching online, maybe asking an animal expert on twitter and seeing if he or she might be able to help me. I also might ask my friends mom because she works with animals and she might be able to help me find what I want.

What questions do we still have?

I still wonder:
  • What are the advantages and disadvantages of having a pet and what are you missing out on if you do not have a pet?
  • Why can some animals live in other places that animals live. What are the advantages and the disadvantages.

Reflection:

I loved this passion time project because it was so much fun! I enjoyed learning what animals do when they feel different emotions such as happy, sad, depressed, and excited! This was actually a good project for me because I have a pet cat (used to) and I could see when my cat would be happy or sad or maybe even depressed or sick. This website also would help me decide what kind of knew pet to get because I can see what kind of animal/pet I want to get based on what the animal/pet does when it has different emotions. I absolutely loved this passion time project and wish I could do something related to it again!
