Authors use Bibliography to tell you some books or websites to more information.

Inserts and side bars are used to give fun facts about something in that time period.
The index is used to tell were something specific is in the book.
Table of Contents
The table of contents tells you the chapters or sections in the book and the pages they're on.
Diagrams and Cutaways
A diagram or a cutaway is used to give someone a visual image of what something looked like, and it is labeled so they know what it is.
