What materials did you use in your insulated bottle (type them in order from your first layer, second layer, and third layer.)? Why did you choose the materials that you did?

Is an insulator a good or a poor conductor of heat energy? This is an important question, so really think before you answer it!

110ºF was the maximum. The maximum is the largest number.
The minimum was 70ºF. The minimum is the smallest number.
40ºF was our range. The range is the maximum minus the minimum.
We used nylon, two foam pieces, polyester, and foil. We chose these materials because we thought they were good insulators.
We didn't choose bubble wrap, fur, carpet insulation, wool, and cotton. We didn't get those for two main reasons, most of the time they either had a bad testing score or were all out by the time we saw them.
Our bottle of water kept trying to float up and moved the thermometer which created blips. Once someone tripped over our cord and yanked it from it's place creating a huge blip.
An insulator is a poor conductor of heat energy. An insulator does the opposite of a conductor, a good conductor stops energy from flowing.

The first is a wood rod, the second is aluminum. The brownish red is copper, the goldish brown is brass. White is plastic. A cup warmer plugged into the wall. On top of the jar the lid has 5 holes. The Jar has warm water inside.
Put butter on the rods and put them in the holes. Predict which one will slid first second third fourth fifth.

I predict the aluminum will slide first. The copper fell first two seconds in.
I predict the copper one will slide second. The aluminum fell second seven seconds in.
I predict the brass one will slide third. The brass fell third eighty five seconds in.
I predict the wood one will slide fourth. The plastic fell fourth it took 2,460 seconds to fall.
I predict the plastic one will slide fifth. The wood didn't even fall.

How did heat energy transfer to the butter in this experiment?

The heat of the warm water traveled up the rod into the butter. When the butter melted, it slid down the rod.
They both had heat energy converted from water. The main differences were that in today's experiment the heat was converted into the rods which melted the butter and in yesterdays experiment it was converted into the cooler water.
I didn't get most of them right. I tried to do the best conductors first to the worst conductors last.
The copper and the aluminum were the two best conductors. They both fell the fasted the copper in two seconds, and the aluminum in seven seconds.
The wood and the plastic were the worst. The wood didn't fall the entire experiment, and the plastic fell in 2,460 second.
I think water is a good conductor. It conducted the heat energy into the rods, and melted the butter.
I think it matters which is a good or bad conductor, because we can use them to conduct energy or stop energy from flowing freely. We use cables which have metal wires to conduct the energy, and they are surrounded by rubber which is an insulator so we don't get hurt.

Transferring Heat Energy From Warm to Cold Water

What happened to the temperature of the cold water over time? What about the warm water?
What happened on the graph to show what happened with the water temperatures?
What did you notice happened at the end of the experiment?
How did the cold water get warmer? How did the warm water get colder?
Did the water go through the red Solo cup? How do you know?
Which direction did the heat energy move?

The warm water's temp lowered, and The Cold water warmed up. The warm water converted it's heat energy to the cold water.
The cold water line went slightly above the warm water line. The cold water became slightly warmer than the hot water.
The cold water and the hot water were both about room temp. The hot water conducted it's heat into the cold water.
The warm water conducted it's heat into the cold water to make it warmer. By making the cold water warmer the hot water lost it's warmth.
No, it didn't go through the red Solo cup. The red Solo cup's red water didn't change color, and neither did the clear water.
The heat energy went straight through the cup and into the cold water. Heat energy moves to anyplace cooler than it is, like a soup's warmth going into the air.

Where is energy found?
What forms of energy are easiest to notice? Which ones are hardest to notice?
Do some items possess more than one form of energy? If so, which ones?
Why is energy important?

1. We found energy at Westgate, although it can be found anywhere. We found it all around Westgate inside the classrooms, and outside the building.
2. Motion energy is easy to notice and elastic energy is harder to notice. Motion energy is movement, and movement is easy to notice.
3. Yes, the tire swing with Mrs.Kliest has two forms of energy. The two forms of energy are motion and gravitational energy.
4. Energy is important because we use it for everything. We wouldn't be able to live without energy, food is energy.
