What I Think I Know About Mars

My notes about the video:

There was a small meteor that had martian life.
They had samples of dirt to see if there was any life on mars, and 3 of four tests were positive, but the fourth and most important test, was negative. Which left the question unanswered.
Ancient river channels showed that Mars was once warmer.
There are polar ice caps.
They use a system indoors to plant foods.
In space muscles lose strength and bones lose calcium.
They exercise daily to keep their strength up.
They have a machine that's a vacuum treadmill to prevent bones and muscles leaving.
Russia's space station holds the record for amount of time stayed in space.
Sometimes people could get bored together, which is bad.
In Russia they have a psychologist watching, because it is important for them to be mentally stable.

What do you know about NASA's plans to visit Mars?
How long will the trip take?
What supplies and equipment will the astronauts need to survive there?
What do you think are the risks of traveling to such a distant planet?
What would you want to bring with you?

They send robots to find evidence of life on Mars. If the evidence is overwhelming, then they will send people. They are trying to send survival resources to Mars.

2.It would take 2 1/2 years to get there. Including 18 months on the surface of Mars. It is 250 million miles. It would take 101 days be halfway to Mars. 202 days to get there.
3.I know that one design for a spacecraft is 27 feet in diameter. It would be divided into two decks, the upper deck with the crew's quarter.
4. I think it would be hard to be in a spacecraft for so long, and there are lots of dangers in space. It would be bad if there was a malfunction since they wouldn't be able to contact anyone. If there was any sort of disease than there would be somewhat of a crisis.
5. I would want to bring important things such as food and liquids. I would want to be able to have shelter.

China has over one billion people
if you combine China and India it is almost 1/4 of the entire population.
The global village has 100 people 61 are from Asia. 14 from Africa. 11 from Europe. 8 from central and southern America. 5 from America and Canada. 1 from Oceania.
People in the global village are clustered together with people who speak their own language. Half of these people come from 6 countries.
20 from china 17 from India 5 from America.
There are 6,000 languages in the world. In the global village more than half speak 8 language.
21 speak Chinese. 9 speak English. 9 speak Hindi. 7 speak Spanish. 4 speak Arabic. 4 speak Bengali. 3 speak Portuguese. 3 speak Russian.
Ages in the global village.
1/5 of the village are 9 yrs or younger.
More than half of the village is younger than 30. 9 are under 5.
10 are between 5 and 9.
18 are between 10-19.
17 are between 20-29
15 are between 30-39
12 are between 40-49
9 are between 50-59
6 are between 60-69
3 are between 70-79
1 is over 79.
3At the present rate of growth, the village grows 12 people a year.
Though lots of people grow old and die, or people move out of certain countries.
The percentage of young people are going down because people are living longer.
In the global village religion there are many different religions.

1 Jewish.

Food
There are 31 sheep and goats.
21 cows, bulls, and oxen.
15 pigs.
3 camels.
2 horses.
250 chickens. More than twice as many chickens as people.
If the food was divided equally there would be enough to feed everyone.
30 people don't have a reliable source of food.
17 people are malnourished and are always hungry.
47 people do not have food security.
The other 53 people have food.
In most of the village the air and water is healthy.
But in some parts of the village it is not the case.
87 have access to safe water.
13 do not, women and girls spend most of their days searching for water.
62 have clean sanitation.
38 do not, they are at risk of disease.
68 breathe clean air.
32 breathe dirty air.
Some children can't go to school.
There are 36 school aged kids but only 30 go to school, and they work when they aren't at school.
Some are child soldiers.
Not everyone can read or write, 14 percent can't read or write.
More males are taught to read and write.
There are 63 people who could have jobs but only 52 do.
Money
In one part of the village someone bought a new car. In another part they have to fix their bike.
In the village, if the money were to be divided equally they would earn $10,300 a year.
The richest 10 people own 85% of the world's money.
The other 90 people get 15%.
The 10 poorest people gain 2 dollars a day.
The middle class people gain 6 dollars to much much more a day.
50 have radios.
45 have TV's (I found this amazing since most people in America have TVs.)
92 have telephones. (60 are cell phones.)
22 have computers.
10 automobiles, 2 trucks, and 16 bikes. (Wow!)
24 people don't have electricity.
73 percent of the energy is from fossil fuels.
12 percent is from nuclear power.
10 percent is from renewable power sources.
Health.
They can be expected to live to 68.
Some will live longer, or shorter.
One problem is malaria, and 6 people get malaria each year.
Luckily, some people can get vaccines and they live longer.
Today 100 people live in the village, 3,000 years ago 1 person lived in the village.
2,500 2 people lived in the village.
100 years ago 32 people lived in the village.
In 100 years they tripled. (WOW!)
It grows at 1.15 each year.
Around 2150 there will be 250. Scientists think 250 will be the global village's limit.

How Our Cells Get the Nutrients We Need

How did the gelatin in Cup 1 change? Did its ability to pass through the filter change?
Did the enzyme powder cause the change in Cup 1? What evidence do you have to support your answer?
What was the one difference between Cups 1 and 2? Was there a change to the gelatin in cup 2?
Which material from our lab was a metaphor for the bloodstream? In which cup did the gelatin’s nutrients reach the “bloodstream”?
Based on your experimental findings, why do you think it’s important for the food you eat to be digested?
How is food digested in the digestion system? What type of digestion did the model demonstrate?
What do you think would happen if you ate lots of food but couldn’t digest it? Would you still be hungry? Would you have lots of energy? Would you perform well in a sports competition? Explain!

It separated. Some of it was able to pass through the filter. There was lots of liquid below the coffee filter. There was some gelatin still sitting on the top of the coffee filter.
Yes it did. The only part we changed was we added powder to cup 1, and we kept cup 2 normal. Cup 2 stayed the same, but cup 1 changed, so the only thing that could have changed it was the enzyme powder.
One difference is that in cup one we put the enzyme powder on the Jell-O, but in cup two we did nothing special to it. The gelatin in cup two did not change at all.
The blood stream was the area below the coffee filter. The actual filter acted as the small intestine, where the Jell-O sat. The enzymes sorted through the Jell-O in cup one. Cup one's nutrients reached the blood stream because of the enzymes.
I think it is important for the food I eat to be digested because it takes the nutrients of the food I eat, and puts them in the blood stream, which goes to the entire body.
There are two types of digestion, mechanical, such as when you chew your food, and chemical, which is what our model demonstrated. It demonstrated chemical because the enzymes broke down the Jell-O without using any mechanical movement.
If you ate lots of food but could't digest it, you would't get any of the food's nutrients. The small intestine wouldn't be able to extract the nutrients. I think you would still be hungry because your body doesn't have any of the nutrients it wants. You wouldn't have lots of energy because the nutrients that normally give you energy won't be able to give you any. If you had no energy you wouldn't be able to do well in a sports competition.

I wasn't here for the activities, so I would like to give credit to Payton #11!

Which activities increased your heart rate the most?
Which activities increased your heart rate the least?
Was the order in which you ranked the activities accurate? (It's good to be wrong!) Explain.
What changes did you notice about your heart rate as you became more active?
Why do you think your heart rate changed when you were more active? What inference can you make? (Use pages 65–66 of your reference book to help you answer this question.)

1. Skipping increased Payton's heart rate the most. Though I would have thought that running would have increased the heart rate the most, since we are moving faster.
2. Laying down Increased Payton's heart rate the least. I would have guessed this because you aren't doing much while laying down.
3. I was not here for the assignment, and I am not sure what this question means since I wasn't here.
4. I think it changed higher when Payton was more active because her muscles needed more oxygen. The blood the heart pumps is filled with oxygen, so the heart began to pump more blood to get all the oxygen to all of the muscles in the body.
5. I think my heart rate changed when I was more active because it was trying to pump all the blood to the muscles. I think this because the muscles need blood, so the heart pumps more blood.

Ugh, I thought, what a miserable climb. I hate mountain climbing. I was halfway up the mountain, absolutely famished, and the only food I had was a moldy grey sandwich. I decided I might as well stop for a rest. I took my disgusting sandwich. Just then I heard a strange noise. I slowly turned around. Hyena! I backed away slowly. I ran to the nearest tree, and grasped the nearest branch, I hardly made it up in time. I only had my sandwich. I threw the sandwich, the hyena began eating. I ran, and thought, It was disgusting anyway.

Breathing Through Straws

What was the purpose of breathing through the straws?
While breathing through the wide straw, were some of the activities more difficult to do than others? If so, which ones?
How does your breathing change as you become more active? Why do these changes happen?
Why do you think that breathing through the wide straw caused the effects that you described?
Did breathing through the thin straw affect you differently than breathing through the wide straw? If so, explain why you think this occurred.
Why do you think you were asked to breathe through the thin straw for 20 seconds instead of 1 minute?
Why do you think you were not asked to walk or run while breathing through the thin straw?
How would your daily life be affected if you could only breathe in small amounts of air with each breath?

1. The purpose was to feel what it is like to have asthma, or bronchitis. The straw made this possible because it makes our breathing more limited.
2. Running with the wide straw was difficult. It was difficult because I wasn't getting much oxygen. Which meant my muscles weren't getting much oxygen, which made it harder to run.
3. My breathing changes when I become more active. It becomes heavier because my muscles need more oxygen.
4. I think it was difficult because my I wasn't getting enough oxygen. When I wasn't getting enough oxygen my muscles weren't getting enough oxygen, so I started to breath faster.
5. It affected me mainly the same, except it gave me even less oxygen. I couldn't breathe in enough oxygen for all my muscles, luckily I wasn't running though.
6. I think we were asked to breathe for only 20 seconds because if we did it for a whole minute we wouldn't get enough oxygen. We could pass out.
7. I think we weren't asked to run or walk because our muscles wouldn't get enough oxygen. If they didn't get enough oxygen we could pass out.
8. My daily life would be affected negatively because I couldn't move around easily without my muscles aching. It would be bad for me if I could only breathe in small amounts of breath at once.
