Things That Might Happen
- In 9 days, we will lose 2/3 of our muscle bulk.
- Our legs will be much skinnier and our hearts will become deconditioned.
- We will loose calcium in our bones.
- People might not adapt to the new routine (E.g Putting spacesuits on wrong, sleeping in, not doing the right thing, etc.)
Ways to Adapt
- Exercise is one of the ways to regain muscle in the legs. To gain back muscle in the legs, everyone will need to do barbell squats for 40 minutes every day. The weight lifted will be different for everyone. It will depend on your weight and will be determined by our doctor, Zuzanna.
- Another way to regain muscle on the legs is by eating a specific diet. Every four hours, you need to eat. Along with anything the cook has to offer, a food that's high in protein is required in every meal. These are the specific items:
- Nuts
- Beans
- Chickpeas
- The amount of protein consumed will vary and depends on weight. For example, if you weigh 180 pounds on Earth, you will need to consume 130 grams of protein every day.
- To regain calcium, the people going to Mars will need to eat a rather large serving of these foods:
- Kale (Or any dark, leafy greens)
- Broccoli
- Oranges
- Almonds
- The chart below shows how much calcium you need to consume daily:

- To get used to the new routine, the people going to Mars will need to go through a simulation for about a week before they go to actual Mars. For example, they'd need to go to a clear area that somehow resembles Mars and do whatever they'd do on the red planet. This way, they will fall into a routine. So they know what to do when they get to mars.
