How Do Our Bones Move?

Questions:
  • 1.Have you ever injured a joint? (Sprained ankle, dislocated shoulder, tennis elbow, etc.) How did it feel? What things were difficult to do after the injury?
  • 2.Which of their moveable joints would be the hardest to live without?
  • 3.What things would be difficult to do without that joint?
  • 4.If you had to choose one of your moveable joints to live without, which one would it be? Why?
  • 5.Is there any movement they could do without joints? (I can think of at least one.)

  • Answers
    1. I have dislocated my elbow once. It felt like It was being torn apart. A few minutes later it popped back in and I was fine.
    2. It would be super hard to live without my jaw being able to move. Also, it would be very hard to not be able to move your hips.
    3. It would be difficult to speak and eat regularly. Also without your hip it would be impossible to sit or walk.
    4. I would choose my ankles because it is pretty easy to walk without them once you get used to it. Also I could deal with no elbows because you can still use your shoulders and it's better than not being able to use your shoulders.
    5. We could inhale and blink without joints. Also you could stick your tongue out.

    Questions
1.What five basic things do humans need in order survive?
2.If we exert ourselves, what are three (or more) signs that our bodies are in distress? Explain why our body does that (research it if you need to).
3.What can we do to make these signs go away?
    Answers
    1. Humans need food, water, shelter, sleep, and oxygen. We could not survive without these five things.
    2. When we exert ourselves some signs that our body is in distress are sweating, panting, muscle soreness, and redness in your head.
    3. To make these signs go away you can take a break. Also you can stop your exercise and start a new one.

    Observing and Describing an Apple

    Picture
    NOTES
    1.          Middle-outside: darkish red with some green and some yellow.

    2.          Bottom-outside: 4 humps with greenish yellow in the middle. Greenish spikes in the middle.

    3.          Top-outside: 1 hole with brown and green around it. Also in the middle green and brown and black.

On the inside there is white and brown. Also some seeds and a hollow area. Over the hollow area there is a very hard covering. When you poke a toothpick in it erupts kind of like a volcano.
    Reflection:
    1. Why were you able to observe so many things about your apple today?
    2. Why is observation and description so important in science?
    3. Rank order the five senses in the order or your observations (i.e. which sense was used most, second most, etc
    Answer:
    1. I was able to observe so many things because in the beginning I had my mind open. If I didn't have my mind open I probably wouldn't have gotten as many observations.
2.Observation and description is important because
    3. I used sight, sound, smell, touch, taste. I didn't use taste at all so I put taste last.

How Might Humans and Aliens Be Different?

    12/3/2014

    HUMANS
    Picture
How we adapted to this planet:
    • We have 2 ears to help us hear. If there was little or no sound we would have tiny ears.
    • We have eyes to help us see. We sleep at night so we don't have as good of eyesight that we can.
    • We have 2 arms to reach out and grab things. If we didn't have anything to grab we wouldn't need arms.
    • We have 2 feet to help us balance in our gravity. If we didn't have gravity we would not need heat.
    • We have a mouth to breathe air and to eat food. If we didn't have air or food we would not need a mouth.
    ALIENS
    Picture
Reasons why it will survive on this planet:
    • The Gravity is high so it has a heavy shell to protect it from falling objects because they would fall faster and harder.
    • The climate is very humid so it has a light color on it's head so it doesn't get to hot and it has wings to use as fans to cool it off.
    • The alien's food source is mud so it has a nose that can suck up lots of food.
    • It has eyes so it can see where it is going or it could die.
    •  The planets surface is mud so it has strong feet that can be pulled out of the mud.

    Reflection

    • Do we have cells similar to the aliens you created?  How or why not?
    • Humans (and probably aliens) have cells that have special functions.  What are some of these cells and what organs and systems are they a part of?  Give at least three examples and be specific.  (Example: Osteoclasts are cells that make up spongy bone inside of many of our bones.  This is part of the skeletal system.)
    • My alien has a big nose that sucks up mud like a vacuum. It also has a hard shell to protect it from falling objects. We don't have these so we don't have the same cells as my alien.
    • We have red blood cells, they carry oxygen all around the body. They take the oxygen to the heart. We have brain cells, they tell your body what to do. They are part of the brain. We have white blood cells, they fight infections like germs. They are part of the immune system.
