Use the poetry books in our classroom library, poems online (do a Google search for "Kid-Friendly Poems"), and famous poetic quotes that you can confirm with the internet to create a beautiful tweet and blog post.

Directions:
  1. Create a tweet with the following information:
    1. LINE 1: Title of Poem in quotes.
    2. LINE 2: Author Poem "By: _____"
    3. LINE 3: "Credit: (URL)"
    4. LINE 4: #WorldPoetryDay (spelled correctly)
    5. LINE 5: Your First Name & Last Initial.
    6. Attach a screen shot of your poem or an image that you find from Google Images (be sure to copy and paste the URL to give credit).
  2. Create a blog post entitled, "World Poetry Day." Include a screen shot of your Tweet and answer the reflection questions at the bottom of this page.

  1. Why did you choose the poem that you chose? Does it have a message that you wish others to learn? Is it playing with language in a fun or original way? Why this poem and not a different one?
  2. What is it that you like about poetry? If you don't know, look through the poems that are being tweeted today to find inspiration!

]]><![CDATA[Global School Play Day]]>Wed, 01 Feb 2017 16:15:25 GMThttps://paulsolarz.weebly.com/bonus-activities/global-school-play-dayThis Wednesday is "Global School Play Day!"  An initiative to get children to be more active and/or more creative with their unstructured time.  For this reason, we will have morning and lunch recess every day this week and on Wednesday, we will have two straight hours where students are encouraged to play games of their choosing.  One restriction that is put on students during this time is that no games may be electronic, so video games and music are not allowed.

I will take out many of our classroom board games, critical thinking puzzles, and card games, but students are encouraged to come up with their own games to play during this time as well.  I will do my best to stay out of it, but will make sure that everyone is choosing to be safe and respectful of each other and our materials.  I will also take lots of pictures so everyone at home can see what fun things the kids came up with!

Rules:
  1. No technology, batteries, or electricity can be used for your game.
  2. You can't ask any adults for help making rules or clarifying directions - YOU are in charge!
  3. You must include anyone who wants to play with you (no excluding)! No matter when they want to join!
  4. Limit yourself to 20 or 30 minutes tops playing the same game - mix it up!
  5. Stay in the classroom.
  6. Clean up after yourself and others! If we lose pieces or leave a mess, we won't be able to do things like this again later in the year.
  7. A goal (but not a rule) would be to create your own games and make your own directions for games that are already created. You CAN follow traditional adult-made rules for games, but you are encouraged to make your own!

One way that we will get to know each other this year is by playing "Two Truths and a Lie" using Voki and our ePortfolios!  Here are your directions:
  1. Come up with ten things that people probably don't know about you (you can include things you did this summer, your interests & abilities, etc.). Write them down on the handout you were given in class.
  2. Take the time to create one more item that could go on the list, but it shouldn't, because it needs to NOT BE TRUE. This will be your "Lie."
  3. Choose two "Truths" from the list and mix it up with the "Lie" and prepare to type them into a VOKI avatar. Follow the directions in class for creating a Voki avatar.
  4. While doing all of this, take turns going next door to get your photo taken to put onto your handout so we can hang them in the hallway.
After each lesson, it's VERY important that you take time to reflect on what you did, what you learned, and how you can improve for the future! I'll help you focus your reflection this time. Copy and Paste each question below into a new blog post on your ePortfolio. To the right of these questions, insert a "Text" and answer each question. For every answer, you should write a second sentence to explain your point further. Do this on every e Portfolio reflection.
  1. Write about something that was hard for you during this lesson.
  2. Write about something that was easy for you during this lesson.
  3. Write about something that you learned during the lesson.

If you finish early, find out who else in class is done by doing a "Give me five" and making a suggestion that we all write our names on the board when we're finished uploading our Voki, so others can listen to them and make their best guesses in the Comments section.  Tomorrow, we will all type in the comments section, which one was the lie!
