Lesson 7 in the book (pages 74-77). Objective: Learn how to FOCUS a writing piece on perspective, rather than a moment in time. When you write from a perspective other than your own, you think differently and see things from a different point of view. You start to add creative touches to your writing that you might not have done if you were writing from your traditional perspective. |
Discussion:
- FOCUS requires careful observation.
- FOCUS involves looking at tiny details.
- FOCUS means concentrating on a single moment or event.
- When writers FOCUS, the result is more compelling writing that includes interesting words, the expression of unique perspectives, and surprising & fun-to-read details!
Activity - Sharpen your observation Skills (Make the smallest details interesting!):
- Find the smallest details in your backpack.
- List them out on your blog post under: "Skill Drill."
- Draw a LARGE picture of a SMALL area of your backpack. Draw all of the small details that you can see. Don't worry about the quality of your drawing, only worry about finding the small details.
- Label any details that you can name. These details can be used in your writing piece today!
Journal Writing:
Imagine that you suddenly shrunk to one inch tall and you're about to climb over the backpack that you just drew. Write a story about your adventure, making sure to focus in on ALL the small details of the backpack and your experiences while climbing. You are FOCUSing on a perspective in this writing piece, so I should feel like you are tiny throughout the whole story.
