Milo and Tock wondered around the city of Reality with Alec Bings, and were sad hearing him tell the story of how the city disappeared because people found out that if they ignored the sight and looked down at the ground, that they would get to the place they needed to be faster. They looked around and saw all the people doing so. As they looked around, they saw someone unlike the rest sitting quietly in mid air (which must be one of the buildings) looking just as sad as they were. Tock was the first to walk over to him.
"Who are you?" He asked.
"Me? Oh, I am just... the old giver. I'm Gavin the Giver," he replied sadly.
Right then, Milo, Alec, and the Humbug trotted over to see what was going on.
"This city used to be so beautiful," he said, "I was one of the most famous people in the town. People would come by, and ask for something, anything, and I would have it ready for them. They called me the Giver, Gavin the Giver. Because I am here in the Forest of Sight, I can see every person's thought just by looking at their face. It makes me happy after seeing the delightful ones after I give someone something."
Milo looked back at all the people and found it hard to believe that they did that at one time. Then he asked Gavin, "What did they do for you in return?"
"Well," started Gavin, "Nothing. Nothing at all. But I didn't expect anything. I just like to help for, you must never do something for someone else just for something in return, you should do it because it's the right thing to do. My, my, you don't know how many times I woke up in the morning not in the mood for it, but I would do it anyway."
Milo thought about that. He looked at Tock, who was nodding in agreement. Then he looked at the Humbug.
"Well everybody knows that," he remarked.
Ignoring the Humbug's comment, Gavin looked at Milo, then at the others. By looking at Milo's face, he knew that he had gotten the message.
"Well you better be off on your journey. It seems frightening to me."
And with that, he gave Alec a wink, and said goodbye to them all.
